Vista crashes with Catalyst 7.2 (Radeon 7200)

Recommended Posts

I am having big-time problems with the catalyst drivers for Vista Ultimate!!!

My specs AMD 3200, Radeon 1600 - dual opererating system with XP and Vista.

I got the microsft drivers for the radeon from MS Update but I can't increase the resolution above 1024x768 with no 3D, no overlay or anything else. When I tried to install the new Catalyst 7.2 drivers - Vista crashed and I had to do a system restore :-(

In XP everything works fine - but VISTA nothing!!!!

Anybody got an idea what is going on there???

Any suggestion please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed, Windows Vista may have had extensive beta testing but now that it is in the wild there are plenty of driver problems cropping up which will take time to sort.

Don't use the Catalyst 7.2 drivers. For now, anyway.

I can't tell what ATI drivers I am on as Windows reports the file versions as either 8.332.0.0, 7.1 or 6.14 (!), but I can't use hibernate as the ATI drivers are preventing the desktop from restoring, according to the crash reports. The machine comes back on as normal but remains at a blank screen, following which both monitors switch to standby. I have to power off and on again and start windows normally. Hopefully this little bug will be fixed in revised drivers.

I haven't upgraded yet but the 7.1 drivers ran fine with Vista and my X800XL - the only problem is that sometimes the CCC is slow to close down and an info screen pops up for a second on shutdown.

Try reinstalling the drivers from scratch. Although I'm having small problems too in which my screen fills with vertical lines and system crashes instantly. I reinstalled them last night hoping to solve it. :)

I had same problem with an X1900GT, but then realised that it was limited to 1024x768 only when I had my TV out plugged in and set to 'clone mode' in control center.

To get round the problem, I disable TV Out when I don't need it, and put up with 1024x768 when watching movies from my PC to my TV (which doesn't make any diff).

So, do u have tv out enabled? if so, check there, if not, then i'm not sure what to do, sorry.

Ditto for cgatlan...

I was expermenting with those present modes in Vista Ultimate when I updated the drivers. :p

Make sure that tv out is not enabled and then you should get your true resolution etc back.

As for Vista Ultimate crashing, did you happen to have Dreamscene Preview running? That's what crashed my Ultimate install on the driver upgrade. I recreated it several times trying to figure out what was going on. :D

Also, try the offical 7.2 drivers. Microsoft Drivers can sometimes be a little off for your system.

I'm still having the crashes and I don't have Dreamscene installed.

This is sad. :(

Hi edgar_wilhelm

Try this

disabling the ATI hotkey poller in service:

Go to Control Panel\Administrative Tools

select service:

Now disable Ati External Event Utility

Reboot

Thank you all for your quick replies !!!

I got it to work and this it how it worked:

I saw a link in this forum for VISTA drivers (sorry don't hive a link right now because I am at work ;-). Went to the site and downloaded the calatyst drivers 7.1 there. It was a massive download (more than 100 MB but what the heck with nowadays broadband connections it just takes a couple of minutes) and I installed it alright. However I was not able to change the sreen resolution above 1024x768. When playing aroud with the expert version of Catalyst I changed about everything :-(

Of course I had the feature "clone desktop to tv" turned on because these are also my settings for XP. I was even able to increase the resolution of my tv to 1280*1024 while the monitor setting still remained at 1024*768. So obviously that was not what I wanted! ..... After trying everything else I finally found the solution that you suggested!

All I had to do was to disable the tv (no dual view) and I was able to increase the resolution!

So - YES your remark about "disabling TV-Out" did the trick! With only the monitor running - I could finally increase the resolution!

However, (and this is a big however!) I don't quite understand why this is the solution - especially when it is working without that problem for XP!

When trying to install other programs in Vista - I came across other things as well that all in all makes me start to believe what others have said before is really triue: that Vista is not ready yet. I am sure it will eventually all disappear (just like with XP) but for the time being Vista causes more problems than it solves. So far I have not yet come to see any advantage besides the new look and feel. Because I was afraid something like this might happen - I decided to go for a dual boot system with XP still being my main operating system.

As a matter of fact working all weekend with Vista made me even reconsider if I should not try Ubuntu (linux) to see what is going on there (knowing that there will be other problems like Games that are not working etc).

So thank you all for your help and support! I hope that someday I can help others like you helped me!

Cheers

I'm having the exact same problems with the new catalyst 7.2 with a ATI Radeon X800GTO2, I had to boot into safe mode and unistall the drivers and catalyst suite due to a black screen while loading, Also I find it quite odd when using 7.1 and run the performance rating programme my PC restarts??

So I'm using the ones shipped with Vista Ultimate and waiting on a perfect set of ATI drivers and catalyst suite

    • Now 8GB of ram looks even worse in the Neo. I'm so happy I purchased 128GB of DDR 4 when I did.... paid $174. Upgraded my parents laptop to 32GB around the same time for $48. Luckily I have a TON of spare laptops. So i'm good on laptops for a while. I also have a lot of desktops too that I could use if i had to. Lets just hope nothing happens to my main 4 monitor couch workstation.
    • I will keep my current devices for several years... no planning in upgrading until these devices stop working. Too pricey.
    • Apple raises MacBook and iPad prices as memory costs surge by Karthik Mudaliar Apple has raised the U.S. prices of several MacBook and iPad models, including the MacBook Neo, which it launched for $599 less than four months ago. The company’s cheapest laptop now starts at $699, while some MacBook Pro configurations have increased by $300. The changes affect the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Pro. Apple has not changed the hardware or storage included with these models, so customers are simply paying more for the same configurations. Here is how the new US pricing compares with the previous starting prices: Product Previous price New price Increase MacBook Neo $599 $699 $100 13-inch MacBook Air, 512GB $1,099 $1,299 $200 14-inch MacBook Pro, 1TB $1,699 $1,999 $300 16-inch MacBook Pro $2,699 $2,999 $300 11-inch iPad Air, 128GB $599 $749 $150 13-inch iPad Air, 128GB $799 $949 $150 11-inch iPad Pro, 256GB $999 $1,199 $200 13-inch iPad Pro, 256GB $1,299 $1,499 $200 The updated prices are already appearing on Apple’s U.S. online store. The MacBook Neo increase will probably attract the most attention. Apple introduced the laptop in March for $599, pitching it as a more affordable Mac for students and buyers considering Windows laptops or Chromebooks. It uses an A18 Pro processor and originally undercut Dell’s new $699 XPS 13 by $100. Following the increase, the two laptops now have the same starting price. The M5 MacBook Air has also lost the price Apple promoted when it launched in March. The 13-inch model arrived with 512GB of storage for $1,099, while Apple’s store now lists the MacBook Air range as starting at $1,299. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 chip and 1TB of storage has gone from $1,699 to $1,999. Apple has made similar changes to its iPads. The recently released M4 iPad Air, which launched at the same $599 starting price as its predecessor, now starts at $749 for the 11-inch version. The 13-inch version has risen from $799 to $949. The iPad Pro increases are larger in dollar terms. Apple’s 11-inch M5 iPad Pro now starts at $1,199, up from $999, while the 13-inch version has moved from $1,299 to $1,499. Both base models still include 256GB of storage. Apple blamed the increases on the rapidly rising cost of DRAM and NAND flash, which provide system memory and device storage. The company told Reuters that it had tried to shield customers from the increases but could no longer absorb them. “We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly,” Apple said. Tim Cook had already warned that price increases were coming. Cook said Apple’s existing component inventory had softened the immediate impact, but that higher memory costs would increasingly affect the company after the June quarter. Much of the pressure comes from the construction of AI data centers. Memory manufacturers are directing more production toward high-margin server products, leaving PC, tablet, and smartphone makers competing for the remaining supply. Apple has not said whether the new prices are temporary or whether further increases are planned. For now, the changes show that even Apple’s purchasing power has not been enough to keep the AI-driven memory shortage away from consumer devices.
    • Ventoy 1.1.16 is out.
    • This is a none story - these low volume Chinese models will always get new experimental features first because Apple and Samsung can't produce them in huge volume to meet demand.
