Cyclic Redundancy Check Error

I have a question for you all. I have a pretty important file on a CD that I need to copy to any other type of media so I can get it to a hard drive. No CD or DVD drive will copy the file completely, on a Mac or PC. I keep getting a cyclic redundancy check error. Is there any way to recover this file? Thanks.

You are getting the error because the CD is damaged. Have you tried wiping the CD with a soft cotton cloth? Make sure to clean it from the center outwards. If this doesn't work, then there are several (debatable) CD cleaners that will clean the CD. I have had limited success with these, but it may be your only hope of recovering the files.

Yeah I've tried cleaning the CD. The file is an .avi, and I can play the file just fine, but can't copy it. Any more suggestions?

If the CD is damaged, you can try a program called CDRoller. I have had many successful attempts at recovering files from a cd that windows itself could not read or access. Depending on how damaged the CD is and the size of the file, it can take up to 24 hours ( from experience ) to recover the file.

The CD isn't damaged. Although, the burner I used to burn it died shortly after burning the disk. I don't know if it didn't finalize the disk the correct way or not.

Well if you can still play the file without error then all hope is not lost. You could get a screen capture program and record the AVI file...

This is easy. Just use a program like CloneCD and make an image (ISO for example) of the CD. Be sure to check "skip errors" in the options. Once you have the image file on your HDD use a program like MagicISO or PowerISO to open the image file and extract the file(s) you want.

The only other thing I can think of is that the .avi is copy protected. If so, the method Dark Ride suggested should work.

Seems to me you have a couple of bad sectors on your burn... this program will read your disk... let you see the contents, then simply drag the file to wherever you want to save it.
