Remove the extension when creating symbolic links

Recommended Posts

I found out how to remove the word "shortcut..." when creating symbolic links, but Vista still adds the extension of the real file to the symbolic link. So when I create a symbolic link to the file "test.exe", the link's name is also "test.exe". But I want it to be just "test". It worked on WinXP, isn't it possible on Vista?

Ok for starters a symbolic link is NOT the same as shortcut.. If you want to change the name of a shortcut - then do that. post-14624-1173616573.jpg

An symbolic links do not add anything to the name, nor do they list any type of file ext, etc..

Here is some info on mklink (create symbolic links, junctions and hard links)

sorry, wrong word choice, I meant "shortcut". see, on your picture, the shortcut is called "cmd.exe - shortcut". But I want Vista to create shortcuts without the extension and without the word "shortcut". I already found out how to make Vista NOT to add the word "shortcut" to shortcuts, but it still adds the extension. If I create a shortcut, I want it to be called "cmd", not "cmd.exe". And I don't want to rename the shortcuts, I don't want Vista to add the extension to the shortcut in the first place. WinXP doesn't do it
