PlayStation 3 hardware sales plummet 82 per cent

Recommended Posts

just some numbers for you guys...

total shipped to UK: 220,000

total sold in first week: 165,000

82% of 165,000 = 135,300

165,000-135,300 = 29,700 sold the week after release

165,000+29,700 = 194,700 sold total

220,000-194,700 = 25,300 left from original shipment

I appreciate that these figures come from another source but that's saying 75% sold in the first week but yet no one can report one single shop that?s sold out of its allocation? The odds on that prove the sales figures to surely be fake.

You're just in denial...they're not fake. They were recorded by aindepedenti> tracking company. 165,000 were sold in the firsweekendi>. Just accept it and move on.

The 165,000 sold is not a fake statistic.

Okay everyone. It is starting to get slightly tense in here again. Lets keep it nice like it has been since I first cleaned it.

Next time around it will not be cleaned, just closed.

The 165,000 sold is not a fake statistic.

DL I'm not looking to provoke anyone but I just needed to reply that the 165,000 figure is estimated not factual, hitting an exact 75% tells you that too.

'Fake' was a poor choice of words, I was just trying to point out that selling 75% of your stock in the 1,000's of stores in the UK and no one selling out completely looks a little odd to anyone with the basic of maths ability.

Hooboy guys.. I contributed to the first cleaning of this thread (and I apologize to Dirty Harry for that).. But why are all of you arguing over statistics? I'm no expert, but at the very least I do know you can't trust any statistics as being completely accurate.

Let me give you an example, here in North America, the main statistics we go by for console sales are NPD numbers. Now they are plagued by many issues, first off they often get inaccurate numbers from stores (either less then they actually sold, or more then they actually sold), second there are major store chains that aren't even included! Guess which store is on that list? Wal-Mart! Hell that's where most consoles are probably sold in N.A.

So come on. I'm not saying this is the same as the NPD numbers, but fighting and bickering about this crap is just insane.. Look if you're biased towards a certain console, whether it's PS3 or 360 or Wii.. You can't judge a console's success until it's beyond a year after launch (not unless it doesn't sell at all, but that didn't happen with the PS3, or 360 or Wii for that matter). In North America/Japan it's only been 5-6 months, in Europe it hasn't even been three weeks! How the heck can you judge a console's success or failure in that window of time?

And also let me add in one other point. A console "launch" is never a good indication of what it's future performance will be. There are plenty of consoles that had horrible launches that wound up being massively successful (the PS2). There are also consoles that have great success at launch (Dreamcast), and then fail utterly later on.

So come on, how about we wait some months down the road before arguing over this crap.. I mean man it hasn't even been a month since the Europe launch, so this is ridiculous.

You're just in denial...
18% of 165,000 units is still a lot of units...

I don't mean to provoke an argument here, but don't you think you're being a tad hypocritical?

When it comes down to it, it's probably the only console for the last decade to not completely sell out in it's opening weekend. Was it because Sony had ample supply, or was it because there wasn't a lot of demand?

If sales had kept up, you'd say it was the former, but due to the large drop in sales, one thing is certain - PS3 demand just isn't there.

Maybe if/when Sony drops the price of it, people will consider such a machine, but with them losing exclusive games left, right and centre, it's becoming more and more likely that this generation belongs to Microsoft and Nintendo.

I was referring to the fact that you're in denial yourself for believing that the PS3 was selling well.

And if you read my post you would realize that it's foolish to assume anything about the PS3 sales being good or bad when it's only been out for two weeks.

Come on now. I don't even own a PS3 and I know that.

MadFerIt, I agree, in general, with your post about statistics, but relative to itself, these statistics are accurate. The reason I say this is because the same sample was taken by the same company during two separate straight weeks. I'm sure their methods were the same both times. Based on that, they are either overshooting or undershooting or dead on, but they are more than likely doing only one of those things for both weeks. So the fact that they found such a significant drop, while tracking the same exact data in the same exact fashion, isn't really nullified by the fact that tracking statistics may not be that great.

I hope that kind of makes sense.

Not sure what anyone expected, but I didn't really expect it to keep selling just based purely on US figures, and even Japanese figures.

stifler6478 makes a good point - the stats may not be valid for comparison with other consoles, but since they were collected the same way both weeks, it is justified to compared one week to another.

(But MadFerIt2006 is still right to say you can't judge a console's success in the 1st two weeks)

At its current price in the UK poor students and soon-to-be students (like me) are not going to shell out as much as they could for a small car. It's either going to take a some very good games or a big price drop to keep any monster sales figures going.

While I don't agree that there being plenty of stock is indicative of the PS3 not selling well, I also don't think it is a good sign that stores are already reducing prices and cutting deals with customers to get rid of them, it looks desperate and makes Sony look bad.

argos seemed to have plenty of them.

http://www.ukresistance.co.uk/ has some interesting pictures.

Lol that site was already posted in this thread, but it was part of the "Cleaning". All I'll say about it is that you shouldn't trust a site like that. Those images could be completely true, but again it's a very biased website thus they are going to pick the images that show the PS3 in the worst possible light. If they received images of sellouts or indications of success they'd probably delete them. So again, don't put much trust in a site like that. Now if an unbiased website that has built some trust with viewers shows nothing but stores in stock, and reducing prices, well then I'll be more inclined to believe it lol.

I think what 360 owners need to realize is that at this point in gaming, at this generation.. We need all three consoles, we need the 360 to be a success, the PS3 to be a success, and the Wii to be a success (bloody Wii still soldout everywhere, makes the 360/PS3 look bad lol). That way each company is forced to evolve or face failure.

Edited by MadFerIt2006

Well, it's damn expensive and right now there're almost no games. Considering there's plenty of stock, I'd say most people who wanted a PS3 has bought one already, or will wait until more interesting games are released hoping the price will drop in the meanwhile.

It's hardly a surprise that sales have dropped, not even if they dropped as much as the article says, considering the price. They'll rise again as soon as the games or price (or both) issues are solved.

    • Exciting! It’s amazing how hearing Japanese can naturally enhance the perceived quality of any experience or product.
    • Your other comment in another article says otherwise, namely "Microsoft veteran wants to replace every single line of C/C++ code with Rust and AI".
    • Sued and... exonerated. Oh, they learned a lesson alright. They learned that anyone who uses the word "antiturst" in conjunction with "Microsoft" is an idiot, even if that person is Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson. That judge ruined the image of the US justice system. Microsoft Edge has a 5.14% market share. Also, Windows is no longer the #1 OS. None of this constitutes a monopoly. Google Chrome, however, has 70.25% share. Also, Google's Android is the #1 OS. Now that's closer to a monopoly.
