And while I'm ranting a bit, let's dredge up Windows XP Service Pack 3, which was delayed from 2005 to 2006 to 2007 and now to 2008. If you were looking for any glimpse into the mind of Microsoft, this is it: The company has completely abandoned Windows XP, and it has absolutely no plans to ever ship an XP SP3. My guess is that Microsoft will do what it did with the final Windows 2000 Service Pack: Claim years later that it's no longer needed and just ship a final security patch roll-up. This is the worst kiss-off to any Microsoft product I've ever seen, and you'd think the company would show a little more respect to its best-selling OS of all time. But the reality is, Microsoft is looking ahead to new revenue and not behind to money that's already in the bank. And though hundreds of millions of people will be running XP for years to come, despite Microsoft's best efforts at selling them a later Windows version, the company has absolutely no plans to actually support those customers. This flies in the face of its publicly-stated life cycle support plans. And it really freaks me out. It should freak you out as well.

SP3 . . not a huge deal to me, my xp pro sp2 installs are running just fine as is, what can a new service pack bring to the table, the OS is stable, and performance is great.

Xp is great right now until I eventually transition everything over to vista (mature drivers and probably until SP1, yes this OS needs to get a service pack for bug fixes/performance/security issues, while xp is pretty complete as is) Plus right now, I haven't bought new hardware yet (dx10) , and there aren't any must have vista only games/apps to make me switch just yet

Improve the new OS, transition away from xp . . sounds about right to me

I take anything he says with a very, VERY small grain of salt. He also says he's guessing this is what's going to happen. A lot of times when he has to guess he's wrong anyway.

I lost any respect I had for him when he:

1.) Wanted everyone to boycott IE 7 simply because HE didn't like the original beta

2.) When he got busted using a pirated copy of XP and changed his story around a few times about why he was using it. "I didn't know" then "I knew the whole time" then "I bought it from a shifty online store"

3.) He uses little photos of his face as a rating system. He thinks way too highly of himself

It's pretty obvious I can't stand the guy :laugh:

The only real reason to have an SP3 is to make it easier to install XP with any and all updates released since summer 2004

i just installed vista this week with a brand new fresh Western Digital SATA II Hard Drive. and so have countless of other people. infact mainly all new pcs are moving away from the old IDE standard and now moving to SATA. i dont think its a problem with the SATA part. maybe a bad hardrive?

also i had no problems installing vista, except for my sound drivers, which i was able to locate from DELL and install under "compatibility mode" and it runs great.

SP3 would be nice or at least a package with all of the updates since sp2. I mean I had to reformat my friends dell last week and it had sp2 preinstalled but in order to get on the schools network it had to have all the current updates installed which took hours.

Okay, if this was true, it would really **** me off. However, it is only spectulation. My gut feeling is Microsoft will release XP SP3. He didn't say Microsoft would actually cut us off with XP SP3, just that he THINKS they will, because SP3 kept getting delayed. But, if memory serves me correctly, Windows 2000 still got plenty of SP's after XP was released, and Microsoft had focus on XP, but they still focused on 2000 and even 98/Me for a short time after XP. So, if history indicates correctly, XP will still receive updates and a SP3, but right now Microsoft is focusing mostly on Vista. Make sense?

I could be wrong, though, so don't take my words as pure gold.

Just my 2 pennies.

EDIT: I looked this up on the web, and while the article is out of date, this pretty much makes sense:

"There could be another reason, according to Rob Enderle, principle analyst with The Enderle Group: Microsoft doesn't want to promote XP. 'They want to put all the focus on Vista and not have an XP service pack come out in a Vista launch year,' he said. 'If they do a major refresh during the launch of a new OS, then people will get confused. They want the message to be clear, to move the customer to Vista and not patch XP.' So, right now, the focus on Vista is more bigger... but once people get used to Vista, which is a year later from now, in 2008, then Microsoft will bring back some focus on XP and focus on cleaning out XP issues.

Its clear to me now that Vista is far superior to Windows XP. However, I am disappointed that SP3 won't be happening. I think that just shows that Microsoft is really trying to kill of Windows XP and encourage Vista sales - which I don't blame them for doing. After all they are a business and not a charity, supporting an operating system released in 2001 in 2007 --> 200? is not great business for Microsoft.

Really the only thing that Vista is suffering from is shoddy drivers (nVidia and Creative to name a few). I think once those problems get sorted out most people will migrate as the OS itself is an improvement over XP.

I am a CNC machinist, and thus far i have attempted to launch my MasterCam 9.1 software on vista and it tells me about known compatibility issues. So i shrugged it off, and decided to play some diablo 2 or starcraft (my 2 favourite games) and i got a similar message about both, accompaied with their refusal to run. Im sure vista is a quality operating system, and there are probably workarounds or driver fixes needed on my part, but i migrated back to xp because of this issue. To me its just not worth the time and effort to fix my software on a new os, when i can spend the time using my software on an old os
