UFC 72 to Take Place in Belfast, Ireland

Ireland?s UFC 72 event, which is rumored to feature a headline fight of former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin vs. Martin Kampmann, will take place at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Ireland, on June 16, according to The Fight Network.

Sherdog.com reported last week the main-event fighters and the fact that the event would be held in Ireland, but UFC 72?s venue remained a mystery.

However, according to The Fight Network (citing sources in the UFC?s recently opened United Kingdom office), the event will take place in Ireland?s biggest indoor stadium, which is part of The Odyssey, a large sports and entertainment center situated in Queen?s Island, Belfast. The venue is home to the UK Elite League?s Belfast Giants ice hockey team and can accommodate more than 10,000 spectators.

The UFC will host its next event on April 21 in Manchester, England, at the M.E.N. Arena. It will be the UFC?s first show outside the U.S. since ?UFC 38: Brawl in the Hall,? which was held in London in 2002.

The UFC recently opened its U.K. office with the accompanying announcement that the organization would explore an international roster of host cities, which could result in an event in Mexico (with Mexico City a likely option) that could be held as early as the end of this year.

Additionally, should the rumored deal between UFC and HBO continue to stall, UFC 72 could be shown on Spike TV on a tape-delay basis, similar to the setup for next weekend?s UFC 70 event, according to a recent Wrestling Observer report.

The report also states that a Forrest Griffin vs. Hector Ramirez bout could be added to the UFC 72 card.

The event will be the first ever held in Ireland.

This first ever UFC event in Belfast features the main event middleweight bout Franklin vs. Kampmann. Franklin, (23-2-0) fighting out of Cincinnati, Ohio, is an extremely well-rounded fighter possessing great striking and submission skills. He fought most of his career as a light heavyweight before moving to the middleweight division. At UFC 53, he knocked out UFC champion Evan Tanner to capture the middleweight crown. He made his first title defense against Nate Quarry at UFC 56 winning by first round KO and his second defense against Canadian David Loiseau at UFC 58, winning by decision after dominating ?The Crow? through all five championship rounds. He faced Anderson Silva in his third UFC title defense, but was KOd by the Brazilian in the first round. At UFC 68, he returned to the Octagon?, and in front of his home state crowd, stopped Canadian Jason MacDonald at the start of the second round. At UFC 72, Franklin faces Denmark?s Martin Kampmann for the fight that could make him the number one contender for the middleweight title.

?This fight is crucial, I am sure my next fight will be a title shot if I secure a victory in Belfast,? said Franklin. ?I believe Kampmann and I will be a great match-up for the fans. We both like to stand, so this fight will not be anything less than exciting.?

Martin ?The Hitman? Kampmann (12-1-0) came to the UFC in 2006 with a reputation as a fierce standup fighter. In his first bout against kickboxer Crafton Wallace, Kampmann displayed his all-around mixed martial arts game as he quickly took Wallace down and submitted him in the first round with a rear naked choke. In his second fight, Kampmann showed what he could do while standing as he pounded out an impressive three round unanimous

decision over Thales Leites last November. The 24-year old native of Aarhus, Denmark then defeated Drew McFedries at UFC, making for three consecutive victories in the Octagon. Now, Kampmann will attempt a fourth win, this time over the former champion and mixed martial arts superstar Rich Franklin.

?I have a lot of respect for Rich Franklin, but I?m going to train hard and I?m going to finish the fight by knockout or submission,? said Kampmann. ?This going to be a good fight " it?s going to be a war.?

Also on the card is the special features Forrest Griffin vs. Hector Ramirez. Forrest Griffin (13-4-0), fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev., is a well rounded fighter whose freestyle propelled him to become the Light Heavyweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter? Season 1. Never one to back down from a challenge, Griffin has faced serious opposition in the Octagon, taking on Tito Ortiz, Stephan Bonnar, Elvis Sinosic and most recently, Keith Jardine. Originally, scheduled to fight at UFC 70, Griffin was sidelined to due illness, but is back in full form and ready to rock against Hector ?Sick Dog? Ramirez. Griffin wants to reclaim his status as a rising light heavyweight while winning over the Belfast crowd with a spectacular victory at UFC 72.

Ramirez (6-2-1), who hails from the same East Los Angeles neighborhood that produced boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya, is a well-rounded competitor who is known for his explosive right hand. Also known for his wrestling and kickboxing skills, Ramirez possesses the power to knock out his opponent with either a swing or a kick. He made his UFC debut at UFC 65 last November, and is excited to take on Griffin and prove he belongs in the high ranks of the UFC.

The remaining bouts for UFC 72: VICTORY will be announced in the near future. All bouts are subject to change.

It'll be interesting to see if Franklin still get's his title shot (in his home town of Cincinnati - which Dana announced after his last victory) if he loses this fight to Kampmann. Franklin is a nice guy, but he has looked like he's lacking confidence since that loss to Silva. Albeit he was relatively in control until the stoppage in his last fight, this will probably be the fight that shows he really is back and he means business. Otherwise he faces a long battle to climb back to the top.

I would say the card for UFC 72 doesn't make me wanna go there and see it...no offense to the fighters...plus its one month after the best card in the world...Liddell vs Jackson :D

Despite reports to the contrary, Spike TV never intended to broadcast next month?s UFC 72 event and therefore never turned its backs on the UFC.

That?s the word from a Spike TV official who spoke to Steve Sievert, the Houston Chronicle?s MMA writer who pens the ?Brawl Sports? blog.

Up until last week, UFC.com had listed UFC 72 as a Spike TV event, meaning it wouldn?t come with a $39.95 pay-per-view pricetag. However, after UFCjunkie.com (www.ufcjunkie.com) posted a report to that effect, the UFC abruptly removed the listing and stated the event would only be available via pay-per-view ? at the pay-per-view price. Considering the June 16 event lacks any title shots or even any real contender fights (aside from the main event of Rich Franklin vs. Yushin Okami), many fans were upset by the news.

Since then, it?s been widely accepted that the decision to put the event on pay-per-view was Spike TV?s, not the UFC?s.

That?s not the case, according to Spike.

From the Houston Chronicle:

?We were never scheduled to air that (UFC 72),? said a Spike spokesman. ?I?ve heard the rumors (that Spike backed out of televising the show due to lack of a compelling fight lineup), but we never committed to airing UFC 72. It?s not as if we turned our backs on the UFC.

?Three big fights in two weeks would have been very tough,? the Spike spokesman said, who declined to comment on whether the UFC specifically requested that the network carry the event tape delayed like it did UFC 70.

Spike is currently set to broadcast UFC Fight Night 10 on June 12 and The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale on June 23.

UFC 72 takes place at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It?ll be the first UFC event ever held in Northern Ireland.

Well, this one seems to have kinda been forgotton, I had to check threads before the last 30 days. But just to remind everyone, it's tomorrow night! For UK Viewers, it's showing on Setanta PPV.

For everyone else, see here for more information.

Id prefer to go to the One in England,

rather than risk my life travelling uo to belfast.

..wonder will they allow knee capping as a "special move"

Actually, you're significantly more likely to be involved in a violent crime in Dublin, or almost any large city in England than in Belfast....

..that gives me little comfort driving up ther in a strange city with a southern reg car... i drove into an apprentice boys march in Derry 3 or 4 years back... the feeling i got seeing "die catholic scum" sprayed on the road infront of me didnt make me feel welcome, either did the gestures made towards me...

... so no... im going to debate whether im safe up there...

Well, if you are stupid enough to venture into dodgy areas, bad things may happen. And I am certain this parade was being policed which meant nothing was going to happen. As I have said, Dublin, etc is much worse

    • The very fact that a TPM (v2.0 specifically which is part of the issue I suspect) is now a baseline for any supported Windows installation will naturally mean other vendors will start to leverage it as they know it'll be there. It's called progress, and it's always been the way. A TPM isn't a windows thing, it's just a module designed to securely store keys. Secure boot isn't a Windows thing (although MS are the TCA as I recall hence the upheaval this year as the 2011 certs expire), it's just a way to verify a bootloader is signed. Windows simply leverages them.

    • AMD RX 9070 GRE AI, Blender benchmarks vs 9070 XT, 7800XT, Nvidia RTX 5070, 4070 by Sayan Sen Earlier this week, we shared the first part of our review of AMD's new RX 9070 GRE. It was about the gaming performance of the GPU, and we gave it an 8 out of 10. As a follow-up, similar to how we did with the 9070 XT and non-XT, we are doing a dedicated productivity review for the RX 9070 GRE as well, where we compare it against the 9070 XT, 9070, 7800 XT, as well as Nvidia's 5070 and 4070. This will include AI, rendering, compute, and more benchmarks. AI performance, especially, is a very important metric in today's world, and AMD also promised big improvements thanks to its underlying architectural improvements. We will be pitching it against the data we already have for the RX 9070, and RX 9070 XT, but also the Nvidia 5070 FE, MSI GeForce RTX 4070 VENTUS 2X 12G, and Gigabyte Radeon RX 7800 XT GAMING OC 16G as they are in a similar price class, but also because we do not have a comparable 5060 Ti card lying around here that we can compare it against. Before we get underway, this is a collaboration between Sayan Sen and Steven Parker, who lent me his test bed. Also, there was no editorial input from AMD. First up, the specs of the RX 9070, 9070 XT, and 9070 GRE, which were given to us by AMD: Radeon RX 9070 GRE Radeon RX 9070 Radeon RX 9070 XT Boost Clock: Game Clock: up to 2.79GHz up to 2.20GHz up to 2.52GHz up to 2.07GHz up to 2.97GHz up to 2.40GHz Stream Processors 3,072 (48 CU) 3,584 (56 CU) 4,096 (64 CU) Ray Accelerator 48 56 64 AI Accelerator 96 112 128 ROPs 96 128 Texture Mapping Units 192 224 256 Memory 12 GB GDDR6, 18Gbps Clock, 192-bit Bus 432 GB/s 16 GB GDDR6, 20Gbps Clock, 256-bit Bus Effective Memory Bandwidth: 640 GB/s Infinity Cache 48 MB (3rd Gen) 64 MB (3rd Gen) Card Bus PCI-E 5.0 X16 Output 2x HDMI 2.1b 2x DisplayPort 2.1a Power consumption 220W 304W Recommended PSU 650W 750W Slot width 2x 3x Price (SEP) $549 $599 As you can see from the specs above, it is less than the standard RX 9070 in every way that counts, except for slightly higher Boost and Game clock speed. Design Moving on, the RX 9070 GRE we were given is an XFX Swift triple-fan, dual-slot design with two 8-pin connectors. At 30cm (self-measured), it will fit in most systems easily. There is no RGB either. The AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE by XFX from all angles. Test system Our test system consists of the following: Lian Li O11 Dynamic Mini V2 Flow (Amazon|Newegg) ASUS Z890 ProArt Creator WiFi (Amazon|Newegg) Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus (Amazon|Newegg) Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet - 44x37 (Amazon|Newegg) 2x 16GB G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB (7200 MT/s in XMP) (Amazon|Newegg) Sabrent Rocket4 Plus 2TB SSD (Amazon) Windows 11 25H2 (Build 26200.8246) AMD shared a press driver based on the recently released Adrenaline 26.5.2 that we were required to use. We now move on to our benchmarks. First up, we have Geekbench AI running on ONNX. For some reason, the 9070 GRE does exceptionally well here in both half-precision (FP16) and single-precision (FP32). It manages to beat the RTX 5070 and RX 9070 non-XT, and is only behind the 9070 XT. Since Geekbench runs in short bursts instead of continuously hammering the graphics card, it seems the GRE's faster boost clocks are helping here. Next up, we move to the UL Procyon AI test suite, starting with the image generation benchmark. We chose the Stable Diffusion XL FP16 test since it is the most intense workload available on Procyon. The Nvidia cards do very well here, as even the 4070 out-muscles AMD's best fairy easily. The positive thing about the GRE is that it gets quite close to the 9070 non-XT in this test; this indicates that the VRAM does not play a very big role here, as SD XL relies on float16 (FP16). So this is something to keep in mind again. If you wish to work with float32 AI workloads, graphics cards with larger than 12 GB buffers would likely emerge as victors. Regardless, the gains are still massive on AMD's 9000 series compared to the 7000 series. Following image generation, we move to the text generation benchmark. This is one test where the 9070 GRE struggled, quite a lot. It seems that the 12 GB VRAM and lower memory bandwidth of the new Radeon 9070 GRE are hurting it quite a bit; the split is massive, especially in a test like Llama2, which packs 13 billion parameters. As such, in all the tests, the 9070 GRE is the slowest of the lot. Next, we tried Blender, and here the AMD GPUs were beaten by Nvidia. Rendering is something the Green team has always had a lead over the Red side, and it has not changed so far. On the positive side, though, the 9070 GRE shows significantly better results than the 7800 XT, which means AMD is on the right path. Catching up to Nvidia, though, will require a lot more effort. And we hope HIP and ROCm can keep improving. Wrapping up AI testing, we measured OpenCL throughput in the Geekbench compute benchmark. The RX 9070 GRE alongside the 9070 did not fare well here at all, even falling behind the 7800 XT. Interestingly, even the RTX 5070 could not beat the 4070 on OpenCL, so perhaps this suggests that OpenCL optimization may not have been a priority for either AMD or Nvidia in the modern era. Conclusion We reached the end of our productivity performance review of the 9070 GRE, and we have to say it's a mixed bag. Unlike the 9070 and 9070 XT, the GRE excels in some areas while losing ground fairly easily in others. Similar to how it happened in gaming, any time the card's memory subsystem gets hammered, it tends to fall behind the others. This was the case with text generation, wherein we saw the VRAM sometimes hit its maximum available 12 GB of usage with larger model sizes. So what do we make of the RX 9070 as a productivity hardware? It can certainly be used, but you have to know it has its limitations. For those looking for a GPU that can deal with more, AMD recently unveiled the Radeon AI PRO R9700, which is essentially a 32 GB refresh of the 9070 XT with some additional workstation-based optimizations. On a similar note, the new Ryzen AI Halo platform is something you can consider if you want to set up a local AI processing station. Considering everything, we rate AMD's Radeon RX 9070 GRE a 7.5 out of 10 for its productivity performance. Price is less of a factor for those looking at productivity cases compared to those considering the GPU for gaming, and as such, we felt it did quite decently on many occasions and can be handy if you need a 12 GB GPU and, for some reason, don't want to get Nvidia.
