UFC 72 to Take Place in Belfast, Ireland

Recommended Posts

Ireland?s UFC 72 event, which is rumored to feature a headline fight of former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin vs. Martin Kampmann, will take place at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Ireland, on June 16, according to The Fight Network.

Sherdog.com reported last week the main-event fighters and the fact that the event would be held in Ireland, but UFC 72?s venue remained a mystery.

However, according to The Fight Network (citing sources in the UFC?s recently opened United Kingdom office), the event will take place in Ireland?s biggest indoor stadium, which is part of The Odyssey, a large sports and entertainment center situated in Queen?s Island, Belfast. The venue is home to the UK Elite League?s Belfast Giants ice hockey team and can accommodate more than 10,000 spectators.

The UFC will host its next event on April 21 in Manchester, England, at the M.E.N. Arena. It will be the UFC?s first show outside the U.S. since ?UFC 38: Brawl in the Hall,? which was held in London in 2002.

The UFC recently opened its U.K. office with the accompanying announcement that the organization would explore an international roster of host cities, which could result in an event in Mexico (with Mexico City a likely option) that could be held as early as the end of this year.

Additionally, should the rumored deal between UFC and HBO continue to stall, UFC 72 could be shown on Spike TV on a tape-delay basis, similar to the setup for next weekend?s UFC 70 event, according to a recent Wrestling Observer report.

The report also states that a Forrest Griffin vs. Hector Ramirez bout could be added to the UFC 72 card.

The event will be the first ever held in Ireland.

This first ever UFC event in Belfast features the main event middleweight bout Franklin vs. Kampmann. Franklin, (23-2-0) fighting out of Cincinnati, Ohio, is an extremely well-rounded fighter possessing great striking and submission skills. He fought most of his career as a light heavyweight before moving to the middleweight division. At UFC 53, he knocked out UFC champion Evan Tanner to capture the middleweight crown. He made his first title defense against Nate Quarry at UFC 56 winning by first round KO and his second defense against Canadian David Loiseau at UFC 58, winning by decision after dominating ?The Crow? through all five championship rounds. He faced Anderson Silva in his third UFC title defense, but was KOd by the Brazilian in the first round. At UFC 68, he returned to the Octagon?, and in front of his home state crowd, stopped Canadian Jason MacDonald at the start of the second round. At UFC 72, Franklin faces Denmark?s Martin Kampmann for the fight that could make him the number one contender for the middleweight title.

?This fight is crucial, I am sure my next fight will be a title shot if I secure a victory in Belfast,? said Franklin. ?I believe Kampmann and I will be a great match-up for the fans. We both like to stand, so this fight will not be anything less than exciting.?

Martin ?The Hitman? Kampmann (12-1-0) came to the UFC in 2006 with a reputation as a fierce standup fighter. In his first bout against kickboxer Crafton Wallace, Kampmann displayed his all-around mixed martial arts game as he quickly took Wallace down and submitted him in the first round with a rear naked choke. In his second fight, Kampmann showed what he could do while standing as he pounded out an impressive three round unanimous

decision over Thales Leites last November. The 24-year old native of Aarhus, Denmark then defeated Drew McFedries at UFC, making for three consecutive victories in the Octagon. Now, Kampmann will attempt a fourth win, this time over the former champion and mixed martial arts superstar Rich Franklin.

?I have a lot of respect for Rich Franklin, but I?m going to train hard and I?m going to finish the fight by knockout or submission,? said Kampmann. ?This going to be a good fight " it?s going to be a war.?

Also on the card is the special features Forrest Griffin vs. Hector Ramirez. Forrest Griffin (13-4-0), fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev., is a well rounded fighter whose freestyle propelled him to become the Light Heavyweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter? Season 1. Never one to back down from a challenge, Griffin has faced serious opposition in the Octagon, taking on Tito Ortiz, Stephan Bonnar, Elvis Sinosic and most recently, Keith Jardine. Originally, scheduled to fight at UFC 70, Griffin was sidelined to due illness, but is back in full form and ready to rock against Hector ?Sick Dog? Ramirez. Griffin wants to reclaim his status as a rising light heavyweight while winning over the Belfast crowd with a spectacular victory at UFC 72.

Ramirez (6-2-1), who hails from the same East Los Angeles neighborhood that produced boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya, is a well-rounded competitor who is known for his explosive right hand. Also known for his wrestling and kickboxing skills, Ramirez possesses the power to knock out his opponent with either a swing or a kick. He made his UFC debut at UFC 65 last November, and is excited to take on Griffin and prove he belongs in the high ranks of the UFC.

The remaining bouts for UFC 72: VICTORY will be announced in the near future. All bouts are subject to change.

It'll be interesting to see if Franklin still get's his title shot (in his home town of Cincinnati - which Dana announced after his last victory) if he loses this fight to Kampmann. Franklin is a nice guy, but he has looked like he's lacking confidence since that loss to Silva. Albeit he was relatively in control until the stoppage in his last fight, this will probably be the fight that shows he really is back and he means business. Otherwise he faces a long battle to climb back to the top.

I would say the card for UFC 72 doesn't make me wanna go there and see it...no offense to the fighters...plus its one month after the best card in the world...Liddell vs Jackson :D

Despite reports to the contrary, Spike TV never intended to broadcast next month?s UFC 72 event and therefore never turned its backs on the UFC.

That?s the word from a Spike TV official who spoke to Steve Sievert, the Houston Chronicle?s MMA writer who pens the ?Brawl Sports? blog.

Up until last week, UFC.com had listed UFC 72 as a Spike TV event, meaning it wouldn?t come with a $39.95 pay-per-view pricetag. However, after UFCjunkie.com (www.ufcjunkie.com) posted a report to that effect, the UFC abruptly removed the listing and stated the event would only be available via pay-per-view ? at the pay-per-view price. Considering the June 16 event lacks any title shots or even any real contender fights (aside from the main event of Rich Franklin vs. Yushin Okami), many fans were upset by the news.

Since then, it?s been widely accepted that the decision to put the event on pay-per-view was Spike TV?s, not the UFC?s.

That?s not the case, according to Spike.

From the Houston Chronicle:

?We were never scheduled to air that (UFC 72),? said a Spike spokesman. ?I?ve heard the rumors (that Spike backed out of televising the show due to lack of a compelling fight lineup), but we never committed to airing UFC 72. It?s not as if we turned our backs on the UFC.

?Three big fights in two weeks would have been very tough,? the Spike spokesman said, who declined to comment on whether the UFC specifically requested that the network carry the event tape delayed like it did UFC 70.

Spike is currently set to broadcast UFC Fight Night 10 on June 12 and The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale on June 23.

UFC 72 takes place at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It?ll be the first UFC event ever held in Northern Ireland.

Well, this one seems to have kinda been forgotton, I had to check threads before the last 30 days. But just to remind everyone, it's tomorrow night! For UK Viewers, it's showing on Setanta PPV.

For everyone else, see here for more information.

Id prefer to go to the One in England,

rather than risk my life travelling uo to belfast.

..wonder will they allow knee capping as a "special move"

Actually, you're significantly more likely to be involved in a violent crime in Dublin, or almost any large city in England than in Belfast....

..that gives me little comfort driving up ther in a strange city with a southern reg car... i drove into an apprentice boys march in Derry 3 or 4 years back... the feeling i got seeing "die catholic scum" sprayed on the road infront of me didnt make me feel welcome, either did the gestures made towards me...

... so no... im going to debate whether im safe up there...

Well, if you are stupid enough to venture into dodgy areas, bad things may happen. And I am certain this parade was being policed which meant nothing was going to happen. As I have said, Dublin, etc is much worse

    • 7 Days: "Enough is enough," Computex 2026, and the next trillion-dollar company by Aditya Tiwari 7 Days is a weekly roundup of picks of what's been happening in the world of technology - written with a dash of humor, a hint of exasperation, and an endless supply of (black) coffee. This week's highlights are packed with hardware announcements from Computex 2026, Microsoft's BUILD developer conference, and lawsuits against OpenAI and Ring. Let's get started. You can check out the recent issues of the 7 Days weekly roundup. "Enough is enough" From "bribing" users to forcing Edge at startup, Microsoft has turned over every stone to make people use its web browser. Browser Choice Alliance (which includes Chrome, Opera, and Vivaldi) is now after the Redmond giant once more and has penned an open letter to highlight dissatisfaction with its practices. The letter to CEO Satya Nadella emphasizes that "enough is enough" and Microsoft should respect browser choices on Windows. BCA laid down a list of actions to level the playing field and believes that browsers should compete on merit. In other browser news, a fresh update to Firefox fixed a massive VPN button and a bug that disrupted page layout. The Ladybird Browser Project announced that it will no longer accept public pull requests and limit changes to those made by its maintainers as it moves towards its first alpha release. Computex 2026 In one of the week's hottest stories, AMD is trying to make DDR5 RAM even faster on Ryzen systems with its new EXPO ULL (Ultra Low Latency). The feature will enable support for even lower CAS Latency DDR5, bringing significant performance gains over normal EXPO. AMD released new octa-core 3D V-cache CPUs in the form of the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Ryzen 7 7700X3D for AM4 and AM5, respectively. The company also brought the 9070 GRE to the USA and other countries. Compared to the NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti, AMD claims the 9070 GRE offers 22% faster performance and 26% better value. The expo also set the stage for Intel's Crescent Island GPU for data center AI workloads and inference. It can pack up to 480GB LPDDR5X VRAM, and the cooling department is handled by an air cooler with a 350W TDP. The silicon giant's AI-focused data center strategy also includes Clearwater Forest, which comprises new Xeon 6+ up to 288 E-cores. Intel unveiled its OpenVINO Physical AI framework to enable scalable, lower-cost edge robotics with improved efficiency. The company said it has found a way to fill the "missing link" that made it difficult to deploy physical AI at scale across the edge. The next trillion-dollar company? Image via DepositPhotos.com Hitting the trillion-dollar mark is the new fashion in the tech industry. NVIDIA has already done so by a wide margin, and now its CEO, Jensen Huang, says Marvell will be the next trillion-dollar company because of its key role in the AI revolution. Marvell is an American semiconductor company founded in 1995; its stock price jumped by 22% this week after Huang's comment. Backlash for employee tracking Meta previously rolled out the Model Capability Initiative (MCI) tracking system to track keystrokes and screen content within specific apps to train its AI models. It wasn't long before employees raised privacy concerns and complained that the software consumed excessive data and battery life. The company is scaling back by introducing controls that allow employees to pause the tracking for up to 30 minutes and request exemptions. In other news, Meta patched an exploit that reportedly allowed attackers to take over accounts by tricking the Meta AI support assistant. The attackers managed to take control of a dormant Obama White House Instagram account that hadn't posted since 2017. This week in software news Catch up on some of the latest software news updates that arrived throughout the week: Hard battle for AV2: The new AV2 video codec can reduce average bitrate by 30-34% compared to AV1, delivering substantial improvements at equivalent visual quality. However, according to VideoLAN's Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the increased efficiency would come at the cost of dramatically higher computational complexity, making the job for existing CPUs much more difficult. Ring faces lawsuit: The smart doorbell brand is in a legal battle over its "Familiar Faces" feature. The lawsuit claims that the feature collects facial data from millions of other Americans (think delivery drivers, neighbors, mail carriers, and pedestrians) who pass by a camera without their consent. Shotcut 26.6 Beta: The latest beta of the free video editor adds OpenFX and VST2 plugin support, UI tweaks, HDR preview upgrades, and a range of bug fixes. KDE Plasma 6.8: A few changes slated for the next release include a warning on the lock screen that shows when the "Slow Keys" accessibility feature is active, so you don't type incorrect passwords. Improved Linux gaming: Canonical has promoted the Arm64 Steam Snap to the stable channel, using FEX emulation to bring PC gaming to Snapdragon and NVIDIA hardware. The search giant said that certified accessories can also get the official "Made for Google" badge. It's optional now: The UK's competition watchdog has enabled publishers to opt out of Google's generative AI search features, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. It's also forcing Google to attribute content properly, using clear links to sources, in all AI-generated answers. It offers balanced performance, sufficient VRAM, and runs cool. However, the ray tracing might feel mediocre. Cuktech 10 Ultra How about a wall charger with a big screen that shows the stats in real time? Taras reviewed the Cuktech 10 Ultra charger, which features four ports, a large display, and up to 110W of power output. It features over-the-top action sequences, Bond's right amount of overconfidence, and satisfying gunplay. Now, you have to buy the hardware just to play that single game. What, you're only interested in THAT game and nothing more? Bad luck, suck it and buy our console.

Axel is returning as a protagonist as well, but this time a mystery driver is offering him the opportunity to take his adventures to the streets in other countries. This will involve Axel chasing down masked villains that have somehow stolen his taxi, which means even more extreme missions and challenges to overcome. "From transporting passengers at top speed to tackling unique side missions and odd jobs across dynamic maps, there are countless ways to drive crazy and rake in big money," says Sega about this new installment after over 20 years. "Perform outrageous drifts, catch insane air, and drive at crazy speeds across five different cities as you work to deliver passengers and complete a variety of missions and challenges." The studio has even confirmed an in-game Arcade Mode that players will be able to access containing the original games for plenty of nostalgic action. Crazy Taxi: World Tour is currently slated to release sometime in 2027 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
