microphone echo in vista

I am working on my dads computer he has a creative sound blaster live 5.1 with xp drivers he installed vista on a new drive and I cannot remember where the option is for microphone echo..... :blush:

Have you looked in Recording Devices? Simply right click the speaker icon in the notification area and click on "Recording Devices", and then look at the properties for the appropriate according device (such as Microphone on Creative SB Live!).

Are there updated drivers for the sound card available from Windows Update? If I recall, there were some WHQL'd drivers for Creative Sound Blaster Live! and Audigy cards published about a month and a half ago.

no there are none on windows update or the manufacs site I looked there are no new WHQL sound blaster live 5.1 drivers

This is caused because the soundcard is playing back whatever the microphone picks up. You can go to sounds in control panel and theres a part there which shows all the individual levels of playback (you cant get to this from the volume icon) from there you need to mute the microphone.

Playback Devices

Speakers

Properties

Levels

Set Microphone to 0, and then click the speaker icon.

Hit OK until you get back to desktop.

It isn't obvious at all, and Microsoft should fix that up.
