Axel
It was my understanding that you can't change the MAC address of a router or piece of hardware due to the assumption that it's burnt onto a chip. It's a problem a family friend is having with connecting to his ISP, he thinks the ISP he is with detects the MAC address of the hardware / modem connecting to it. This is fine. However, he says he can change the MAC Address of the router itself (it's a netgear one, not sure which one but he said it's 'last years model'). Is this possible or is it a load of bull? I don't wanna go in telling him it can't be done if it can and look like an arse! Cheers for any help! fault
Quote It was my understanding that you can't change the MAC address of a router or piece of hardware due to the assumption that it's burnt onto a chip. Unfortunately, your understanding is wrong. It is possible to change the MAC address on most modern routers usually through the web configuration interface. Quote It's not at the bottom of mine... I have a DG834PN. Well, do a bit of research for your router then... Have you looked through the reference manual? http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/dg834pn_re...ual_11Nov05.pdf ... Quote Configure your router to spoof your computer?s MAC address. This can be done in the Basic Settings menu. Refer to ADSL Modem Wireless Router Setup Manual. +BudMan MVC Posted May 4, 2007 MVC Share Posted May 4, 2007 That is NOT a router.. that is a gateway device, ie modem/router combo.. Its quite possible that device does not allow for MAC cloning.. I see nothing in the manual that gives any details of where you might do that, then again I see nothing in that manual about how to setup your PPPOE or PPPOA connection either - other than a reference to configure it by hand vs automatic.. Nor do I see any mention of how to actually setup the ISP connection in this reference. http://documentation.netgear.com/dg834pn/enu/208-10019-01/ Maybe I missed it - but the documention seems lacking IMHO. my suggestion -- get a stand alone modem, an then use a real router ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/558106-can-you-change-the-mac-address-of-a-netgear-router/#findComment-588527662 Share on other sites
fault
The documentation is a bit shoddy but it does suggest some references to PPPOA/PPPOE e.g., page 20 of the PDF manual specifies PPPOA/PPPOE protocol support. The device seems to have some sort of automated wizard that does the bulk of the configuration for you. I'd still expect a "manual" configuration screen somewhere. Quote That is NOT a router.. that is a gateway device, ie modem/router combo.. Its quite possible that device does not allow for MAC cloning.. According to the documentation it claims it does. The index page in the HTML documentation that Budman found has an entry for "spoof MAC address" which when clicked on says at the bottom: Quote If your router is unable to obtain an IP address from the ISP, the problem may be one of the following:... # Your ISP only allows one Ethernet MAC address to connect to Internet, and may check for your computer's MAC address. In this case: Inform your ISP that you have bought a new network device, and ask them to use the router's MAC address. OR Configure your router to spoof your computer's MAC address. This can be done in the Basic Settings menu. Refer to the online help in the wireless ADSL modem router main menu. So I'd try checking in this "online help" they speak of and if it's not there, you should raise it with the vendor... +BudMan MVC Posted May 5, 2007 MVC Share Posted May 5, 2007 Yes the documetion mentions it -- but the manual they reference for info makes no mention of it.. Its possible this model of that hardware does not support it??? The manual is a joke to be honest.. It mentions manual setup - which is where the clone feature would be, but it gives not details other then how to hook up the device - and then shows a radio button for selecting manual mode.. But then gives no details of what options are available, etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/558106-can-you-change-the-mac-address-of-a-netgear-router/#findComment-588530161 Share on other sites
