Spring update deactivated AA?

Recommended Posts

just came across this thread on xbox.com;

http://forums.xbox.com/12291146/ShowPost.aspx

i thought i saw it yesterday on splinter cell, but i thought it might just be my imagination or perhaps the expanded option, but after turning that off it still had more jaggies than before.. also, the forza 2 demo seems to have the same problem (though of course i haven't seen that before the update it just looks like there are way too many jaggies)

anyone else experience more jaggies on other games?

Yes I just checked out Call of Duty 2 and I can notice loads of jaggies now! Man thats so lame it was fine before, now the update is out its messed up. I didn't notice any difference on GOW though. Im playing my 360 on the official VGA cable btw.

Don't spread bullsh*t. There is enough refutation of these claims that it cannot be true. The update DID NOT "turn off" AA for any games! There were some VGA updates, but none of this has to do with general AA application for games. I just played 6 games and noticed absolutely no difference on my setup. It is possible that jaggies are becoming more apparent to some people but that ultimately means nothing. If this "issue" becomes headline gaming news or gets a confirmation from a developer, then we can believe it.

Dude, what are you talking about? Obviously this has affected enough people that a 3page thread was started on Xbox forums and a handful of people here noticed the same thing. Perhaps your setup is slightly different (are you using VGA?) and maybe you don't see the problem, but that does not mean that there is no problem.

If you read something like this, it's easy to want to believe it and then make it reality. It's not science fiction - it's human psychology. The XBOX360 cannot pick and choose based on your television whether or not you should get AA. Give me a logical explanation for this and maybe some sort of argument can be made. So far:

1. Not a large number of people are confirming this.

2. It's happening on different titles for different people.

3. There are people for whom it's not happening whatsoever!

Everything points to this being untrue. Here's an idea for you though: clear the 360 cache AND play your game on an XBOX that has not been updated, then on yours and ask your friend(s) to confirm too. Then I'll believe you! :p

Why would people make this up? I would understand if it was just a few anti-MS fanboys or something, but it's a good number of people noticing the problem. You don't seem to get it. Obviously it's not Microsoft scheming against certain people and choosing whether or not they should get AA. Something in the video output (VGA) got changed in the Spring Update.

1. Did you follow the xbox forum link?

2. Again, did you read the xbox thread? Also view the Demo sticky on neowin, people are complaining about jaggies on the Forza 2 Demo. CoD2 and Oblivion also seem to be affected.

3. Because they're not using VGA (it seems to be only a VGA issue)

Just wait for a patch and/or confirmation and you'll see the light. :)

Well if this is the case I have not noticed it at all. I am playing on a 32" SDTV and it looks the same to me on all my games. I have not tried it yet on the parents HDTV. I also have the new black level thing turned to intermediate and it does make some thing easier to read adn also makes so things not supper brights and blurry like in NFS:MW. No complaints here :)

The new contrast/black enhancement for VGA users and overall sharpness lift may be what's causing people to see or believe they see more jaggies. Hey, if it's only VGA - why not report that exactly?! I know you did, but a lot of people did not specify that OR are not even using the VGA cable that are reporting jaggies. How would that make sense?! I just don't want a lot of people to influence others into believing this bull*hit and spreading it - aside from VGA as with that output I don't argue with you.

I think this is what has happened. Now Component and VGA are almost identical, previous VGA users are subjected to the same jaggies Component users have always had.

I personally can't see a difference at all. I played COD2 earlier cause it's what most people seem to be picking it up on, but it looks exactly the same it did at launch

The Forza 2 demo on the other hand does have a lot of jaggies, but I think they may have reduced the AA for a smoother frame rate.

I would have rather had 30 fps 4x aa all the time..the jaggies are rediculous, i seriously question if there is even 2x aa

The gameplay AA is 2x as officially confirmed. The perceived jagged edges should dramatically decrease if you use a non-VGA connection to a large, HDTV display.

the hell? Why should I have to get a bigger TV or change my (I'm using component FYI) connection? The jaggies are terrible, not my fault. I don't mind slight jaggies, but not to the extent FM2 has them. I doesn't look 'next gen' at all. I was expecting something special, not something that looks like it could have come out a couple of years ago.

I was just stating a fact about the jaggies and the type of display/connection, not suggesting you HAVE to do anything or anything is YOUR fault. Don't like the game enough, don't buy it. Although, if you really enjoy it like a lot of people are even though you hate the jagged edges, I'm sure you'll still get it. This game is fantastic. I think they knew what they were doing when they sacrificed AA for FPS.

yes, the FPS is amazing and the actual driving is fantastic and the customization part will probably be of equal quality, it's just that it could've been so much better if they managed to get the AA right. here's to hoping they release an update in the future that fixes the AA stuff.

I just don't feel like putting down ?40 on this (which I was planning on doing) when it looks.. well frankly, bad. I know it's not just about graphics blah blah, but that's just how I feel. I was expecting something least at close to the screenshots and videos they've been putting out, but the end result is nothing even close. I personally would gladly sacrafice some FPS for AA, from the way they were talking, I thought we'd have both.

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.

    • I'll wait for the root cause analysis. Looks like it's HP, Lenova, and certain configurations that are askew, hardly "all of windows." Time will tell.
