Kaspersky 7 vs NOD32

Question

So I read that NOD32 isnt doing too well in its detection compared to Kaspersky - and Kaspersky is now apparently pretty damn light, so lemme ask - whats the fastest performer out of the 2?

Im using NOD32 on Vista at the moment and dont particularly wanna change but if I can get better detection at the same if not better performance.

Why the hell not? XD

KAV 7.0.0.120 was never "officially" released ... it was an internal beta. But to answer your question, it is still a beta (and the latest official beta is KAV 7.0.0.119TR).

As far as the release date for version 7 ... there is some talk (/ joking?) that version 7 will release on 07/07/07 ... but that is not official.

i dont use nod32 anymore because it has cpu usage problems

I've noted the same thing, and it's because of NOD32's "advanced heuristics" feature. I wrote to Eset support, and the only response I got was "There's nothing we can to--it takes CPU time to run the emulation."

I haven't used KAV 7 or KIS 7, so it may be that those products have a similar CPU penalty. But I do find it entertaining when everyone calls NOD32 "light". As if whether an AV uses 4 MB or 20 MB really matters on any decent modern PC. And they never consider CPU usage in their "light" equation...or maybe they don't realize that it's NOD32 dragging the CPU when they experience those slowdowns.

Oh, I know, "I have no slowdowns. My PC magically turns into a Cray supercomputer whenever a new program is added to the file system, so there is no noticeable CPU impact."

You can turn off the pro-active protection if that's not your style.

Or you can choose not to install it at all. I use System Safety Monitor (mainly because it has a basic network firewall built in, which I think KAV should have...but no, you have to pay for KIS to get that). In any case, I use KAV 6 but don't have Proactive Defense installed at all.

you could use your present existing license for kasperesky 7 right? i mean you don't have to purchase a new one right?

I used my KAV license for the latest 7beta....worked for me. Makes 7 good for the duration of the original license. I find KAV to be the best for me out of at least 5 or 6 I tried in the last few months (Vista OS).

so far i've used at least about 5 different antivirus s/w (including kaspersky and NOD 32) and in my opinion the best is kaspersky.... :)

Yeah, I'm currently using my KAV6 license on 7.

The latest version for NOD32 is 2.x while that of Kaspersky is 7.x. So, if you notice, KAV was given more chance to develop and become better. NOD32, in my opinion, is better than Kaspersky (simpler, faster, more secure..). Even to those who don't believe in that, they should take into consideration the version of both products.

I had NOD32 on my laptop, but installed a trial version of KAV 6 just to see what else was out there. I found what else was out there...3 trojans that NOD32 completely missed. I was understandably ****ed, gave KAV6 another week and then bought the full version.

Same here :(

I've been a LONG time NOD32 user, and tried KAV6 a while ago, didn't like it.

Installed KAV7 yesterday - WOW!

2 Trojans (6-different infections) found on my PC.

Worst of all, you go to NOD32's forums and you write: "NOD32 didn't detect this on my system (found it w/ KAV)" and a MILLION FRIKKIN FANBOYS will say you're a trouble-monger, downloading exquisite virii on purpose and preetending to be infected and that despite your infiltrations NOD32 remains a better product.

That turned me off. big time.

As soon as KAV markets v7 final I'm buying a license. Even though my NOD32 has 7 more months to go.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. :D

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
