I've had enough. My 4th has died.

mines never died, bought it 6 months after it was launched.

heres a trick. when youre done w/ a game, take the disc out, reset it and leave it alone for 5 mins. then turn it off.

the ring of death is almost always because of chip creep. which happens when it cools too fast. because some of the retainers are loose. this is why the elites have the cpus epoxied in.

the noise is just the DVD drive, not fans. the earlier models had no noise dampening. the newer BenQ ones do and are nice & quiet.

I went through 4 of them myself as well. The final straw for me was when I purchased a new one from Dell and it gave me E86 out of the box.

You realise he's talking about the 360 right... not the monitor....

When I'm done, i wanna shut the thing off and leave it. If you have to go through an entire shut-down procedure everytime ... What does that tell you about the quality?

I'm still on my first one. But heres the catch I suffered through the 3 red rings.

From what I could tell during dissasembling the console. The mother board was a wee bit warped due to the heat. Since the cpu and gpu use ball bearings for contacts instead of pins. I figure I try the old hot candle on a petri dish to see if the bearing with go back making contact. It worked for about a month.

Then I looked at the mounting brackets that hold down the heatsync and wasnt to impress. I cut down some spacers and instead of using the x bracket, I made a square one to evenly distribute the weight.

Got that from a forum post on xbox-scene to fix the 3 red ring issue.

On top of that fix. I put on some rubber dampeners for the dvd-rom assembly at the top and bottom of the plastic pegs to stop the vibration and to lower the decibal noise it was generating.

All in all it's been 7 months since these fixes where applied. Has been running greatly.

I do share you pain though. I would of stopped at the 2nd unit replacement if I wasnt a tinkerer though.

This sucks. I've had mine for 3 months and have had no problems other than the dirty disk error on Fight Night 3.

...but now after reading all of these posts, I'm afraid to touch the thing. Feel like I'm sitting in front of a time-bomb and I can't see the timer counting down to the "BOOM"!

I have the extended MS service, but who wants to wait 2 weeks every time the unit decides to Sh][t the bed!

    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
