Speed up slow file transfers on Vista

A Windows Vista bug that is causing file transfer to slow down has been causing much frustration for many users. A discussion about this problem has been active on the Microsoft Support forums, which you can find here.

Although this bug has been around for quite some time and is becoming a bigger problem each day, Microsoft has yet to issue a public release and will require you to contact them directly in order to receive the fix.

The links are fine and legit, it's only down for some reason.

I always get the latest hotfixes from there, they post all hotfixes only available by calling MS and requesting the hotfix sent by the KB article #.

Hmm..there's a few things that could use fixing for Vista on my laptop (including the occasional problem with my built in webcam). Though, I wonder is it better to install them now, or wait for the Service Pack? What if these fixes come in the Service Pack as well?

@Laughing Man: It's all up to you, if you have the specific problem described in the hotfix KB article, for example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931770, and you don't want to wait for the next service pack, then it's worth installing I guess :) but be sure that it'll be definitely included in the future SP, and the SP will install fine whether you've applied the hotfix before or not, it may replace the fix with an updated version too.

I installed like the 120 Hotfixes released there and have yet to see a BSOD or any problem caused by that :)

It's probably down because of:

"Please do not upload any hotfix`s which are publicly available from microsofts website! If you are unsure how to check this, ask in the forum!"

Just get it directly from the Microsoft link ;)

EDIT: Oh, they want you to contact them to receive the update. Arse to that, get the link back up please :D

The site is back again, go to this page http://thehotfixshare.net/download/index.p...amp;sort_mode=d and search for "KB931770" and download the x86 or x64 according to your system. I've been using this since April and it fixed the problem for me.

And _MacGyver_, it's not available from MS to download yet, hence this site :D it'll be included in SP1.

And yes the site is fine. As you can see all the hotfixes are in their original format and still have valid Microsoft digital signatures. So nothing to worry about. Just to make that clear...

I was a bit hesitant about trying these out on Vista x32, but I did anyway and they do work, and solved the silly lengthy file copy operations.

Slow Network Transfer Fix: Press the Windows button, type OptionalFeatures and press Enter, uncheck "Remote Differential Compression", and then click OK.

When all else fails: Open an elevated Command Prompt, type netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=highlyrestricted and press Enter (default=normal).

This setting allows the receive window to grow beyond its default value, but do so very conservatively.

^ That slightly speeds up the transfer speeds. With this hotfix, it actually transfers like it did in XP.

No. This doesn't help people with slow local transfers (I tried installing it anyway -- didn't resolve the issue).

The copy process may stop responding when you try to copy files from a server on a network to a Windows Vista-based computer

Is this because of DRM? I read 3d graphics accellerator driver developers have a hard job with Vista playing whack a mole all day.

It says it's not valid for my system when I try to install it. ANyone else get that?
