I was just browsing CPU prices at www.pccanada.com and then stumbled upon Pentium Dual Core. :pinch:

Hello wiki!

The Intel Pentium Dual Core is a new brand of Intel Processor that first appeared in selected base model notebook computers from Dell, Acer, HP, and Toshiba in early 2007. These processors are identified by the model numbers T2060 or T2080, indicating it is related to the Intel Core family of processors and may be a variant of the Intel Core T2050 chip. Early research reveals the processor to be similar to Core processors but with only a 1MB L2 Cache, whereas Core processors feature 2MB caches.

It is not known why, after announcing the retirement of the Pentium brand name, Intel has brought it back, although Intel did announce possible plans to return the Pentium brand to the market as an alias for low cost Core 2 chips based on the Conroe-L architecture. The planned numbers for those processors to carry the Pentium brand were to be prefixed by the letter E, not T as the Pentium Dual Core uses.

Specifications

T2060

1.60GHz clock

T2080

1.73GHz clock

533MHz Front Side Bus (FSB)

1MB L2 cache (shared, meaning both cores use this single 1MB cache. This equates to 512kb per core)

65nm process

Looks like Intel is eager to grab and hold on to its market share by any means possible.

Actually, the models listed at www.pccanada.com are slightly different from those on wiki. They have:

Intel? Pentium? Dual-Core E2140, 1.6-GHz @ 800Mhz w/ 1Mb Cache (Socket 775) (Retail Box) w/ Heat Sink & Fan fo$109b>

and

Intel? Pentium? Dual-Core E2160, 1.8-GHz @ 800Mhz w/ 1Mb Cache (Socket 775) (Retail Box) w/ Heat Sink & Fan $119

They are not in stock yet, but available for pre-order. And it looks like Intel positioned them right between the most expensive Celeron and the cheapest Core2Duo.

They've been around for a while now, they are basically the budget c2ds

That's exactly why I posted it, since the budget line from Intel has always been Celeron and now it look like they have four lines of CPU's for consumers with the fifth (Pentium D9xx) fading away.

Anyway, market diversification is a proven success strategy.

Pentium DC E21x0 are for desktop. They are Alendare core (like the E4x00) with 1MB disabled.

Pentium DC T20x0 are for mobile.

Here a review of the lowest Pentium DC the E2140:

For the price, they are giving a better price/performance than the E6300.

They are really interesting, since the real market is in low class processors and they are Wipping out any AMD Athlons x2 now.

I've always preferred Intel illogically. I have no idea why I've always liked Intel CPUs, but I do. :p

I think Pentium Dual Core is quite nice. "Pentium 5 Dual Core" doesn't make sense really. Where are the other four incarnations of Pentium Dual Core CPUs? :D

In my opinion, they chose a pretty good name for it. "Pentium 5" just doesn't seem quite right to me for some unknown reason. Sticking to the Pentium name is a good move, I think. Good job, Intel!

As for how AMD will respond, I don't care much. My prediction is that Intel will beat the pants off of AMD sometime soon, but that prediction is biased too... :D

Yeah exactly.

I was just digging more info and found that the desktop versions are only going to be released on June 3rd, so whoever said they've been out for a while is exaggerating things a little.

There's also going to be a Pentium E2180 clocked at 2.0Ghz and it will be released on August 26th.

I support Intels move to dedicate a line to Pentiums name, too, since there have been just too much money invested in this brand name and it's one of the most recognizable in the World.

Wrong, theyve been out in the UK for a few weeks now. I bought one for my media centre.

Yeah, same here. Besides, Pentium 5 would be redundant since pente(penta) means five and the first Pentium was a successor to 486. Intel couldn't trademark a number and they wanted a brandname. Of course, you, guys, all have known this :shifty:

    • Not such a great deal, Ultimate, which gives you full 5080 features is $181.99 CAD per month, that's $2183.88 per year, I can buy the 5080 for $1809.99 CAD, then it goes up to $279.99 per month after the first billing cycle. Typical cloud rental, costs more than buying the hardware.
    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
