Problem installing Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2

Recommended Posts

Hello, dear Neowin Forum members. I'm quite new here and this is my first post. Sadly, the occasion isn't among the best... Now, onto my problem. I'm running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP1. Service Pack 2 has just been published and I, of course, tried to install it for there are some very important system improvements. However, during the installation, I get the following error: "Access is denied" and nothing more. Then the setup rolls back and the system reboots.

When I looked up the issue on Microsoft's site, I discovered that there have been similar errors with Windows Server 2003 SP1, so I followed the instructions there. Here's the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148 . Here I include the following setup logs:

\Windows\svcpack.log

The log itself was pretty big so I copied only the last lines, which contain the error description:

Like, in the instructions on MS's KB article, I enabled verbose logging, and searched setupapi.log, but found no evidence of the error during the setup procedure.

Will anyone please help me? I am ready to answer questions if it will help solving the error.

Do you have a Setupapi.log as the KB article says?

Yes, in fact I do. I had it before AND after I enabled verbose logging. When I enabled it, I again tried to install SP2, and of course, failed. However, after that the setupapi.log did not contain any info on the error, neither on any error relevant to the "Access is denied" I received.

I should also add that, after some thorough analysis of the logs, I found this application to be a little suspicious uddisp.exe (see svcpack.log, more to the end). A log accopanied this app in the Windows directory - uddisetup.log:

did you carry out the registry changes as the MS article(KB873148) you linked to suggests?

As for the registry changes, the article states that I must change the permissions for the problematic registry key, WHICH I should be able to find in setupapi.log. However, in the previous post I said that setupapi.log contains no such info whatsoever

Thanks for the reply,

I managed to install W2003 SP1 by doing the following (I am not sure

what exactly corrected the problem)

1.) At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER

after each line:

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2

net start cryptsvc

exit

2.) Deleted all files in

%systemroot%\System32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

that begin with tmp*.cat.

Registry wise, the keys I would try resetting are:

hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>Updates

hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>Windows>currentversion>App Management>ARP Cache

hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>Windows>currentversion>uninstall

hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>Windows NT>currentversion>Hot Fix

and this key if you can find it:

hkey classes root\vnd.ms.radio

If these do not work I would try reseting permissions at a higher level like hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>

2.) Deleted all files in

%systemroot%\System32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

that begin with tmp*.cat.

Registry wise, the keys I would try resetting are:

hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>Updates

hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>Windows>currentversion>App Management>ARP Cache

hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>Windows>currentversion>uninstall

hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>Windows NT>currentversion>Hot Fix

and this key if you can find it:

hkey classes root\vnd.ms.radio

If these do not work I would try reseting permissions at a higher level like hkey Local machine>software>Microsoft>

Thanks for this info, but this is for a different kind of error, not mine. Howver, I did indeed try this solution (backed up first) and nothing specific happened, same error as before

Have you tried reseting the permissions on the registry keys I suggested in my last post?

Yup, I did. I also resetted the permissions for the whole HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT since I've had some problems in there in the past. Anyway, there was no change whatsoever. Maybe I should reset the permissions for the whole registry? (seems a bit dangerous)

you could but the more you do this the more likely that your install is going to be screwed (security risks, future updates and other apps). it might even have been something like this that caused the problem to occurr in the first place... ;)

Well, it seems that the only reliable solution for now is that I don't install the SP after all. You know, I had the same problem when installing Windows Server 2003 SP1. I couldn't manage to do anything so I waited, and waited, and waited...until Microsoft released an installation CD of Windows Server 2003, with integrated Service Pack 1 . So I reinstalled Windows Server 2003 with that CD and everthing was OK!
