For some reason my network connection is no longer working on my desktop. I was using it just yesterday, but all of a sudden it's not working anymore.

The icon on the taskbar notification area now has the red "X" disconnected network icon, and when I hover my cursor over it, it reads "The dependency service or group failed to start."

I click "Diagnose and repair," and it now states the following:

Windows tried to repair but a problem still exists.

The network adapter "Local Area Connection" is not correctly configured to use the IP protocol.

-> The network adapter "VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter" is experiencing driver or hardware related issues

- Make sure your Internet Protocol Bindings are correct

Ensure that "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" are selected in the configuration for the network adapter "Local Area Connection"

Click here to open the adapter's configuration settings.

I downloaded the latest Vista (32 bit) drivers for the ethernet, but it doesn't fix anything. I check the configuration settings as listed above, and they are set to that. I checked the cable itself and tried a new one, and that didn't do anything.

Any ideas? :(

Go to Run and type "services.msc"

Find Network connections or something similar and scheck it says started.

If it does not double click it and go to the dependancies tab. Check what the service depends and check that them services are started, and if need be, check their dependancies.

When you start the service does it give you an error code? If so can you post it.

Also have you tried restarting the computer?

Yup, I've restarted, reinstalled the driver, uninstalled the old driver and had Windows reinstall it, and checked all the suggestions Windows gives me.

It says "started" in the services and appears to be working, yet it isn't actually working, obviously.

No error code was given, either.

DHCP Client is not started and says "Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified"

Network Location Awareness is not started and says "Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion"

All the rest started. I'll look into the two above that gave me errors.
