Disable Calculating Time Remaining Notification?

Recommended Posts

I have found when doing file operations (copy, move, delete, etc) Vista occasionally takes FOREVER. This is because it will first calculate how long it thinks it's going to take.

The copy itself is just as fast if not faster than in XP. I've moved a 4kb text file and it took 30 seconds to figure out how long it would take and then once it did that it just finished because the copy took such a small amount of time. Is there any way to delete this feature or at least make it only calculate if moving large files or a large number of files? It seems random as to when it takes long to calculate it too because sometimes I move a file that is several hundred megs and it doesnt do it for a long time....

I've attached a pic of the dialog so you know what I'm talking about. (The file in the example is large so it isnt really affected by this problem.)

I was thinking the same thing....

Does TeraCopy do this automatically? For example..if I just want to move a file from one drive to another can i just drag and drop and teracopy will take over or do I have to do something special?

Yes. Teracopy takes over from the default explorer drag and drop.

I'm using the free version of the program and it's pretty good.

Do you know where the patch is?

It was some where on this page. But I don't know which one.

EDIT: One way is:

Start - Control Panel - Programs and Features

Click on "Turn Windows Features On or Off" look on the left side of the panel.

Uncheck "Remote Differential Compression"

Brilliant! Just downloaded and installed. As a test, before installing, I copied a folder with 15 mp3's fom c drive to external hd. Calculating time remaining dialogue appeared, took about 15 seconds. After installing TeraCopy, did exactly the same thing. Small and quick dialogue, 4 seconds.

Never heard of this app. VERY GLAD I checked this thread out! :D

Teracopy was good. But it has its share of problems: it can't handle unicode filenames, and gets stuck with the typical access denied errors when copying to or moving files out of a UAC restricted folder.

Its got nothing to do with the power of the HD or what RAID confgiuration you have. Its a bug in the OS thats causing the problem.

I thought there was a KB patch for this? I remember installing it, and it helped out some.
That patch worked for me, well for a few days anyway and now vista spends half an hour calculating the time remaining again. No idea why.

    • Yes for me, I installed 'old calculator' (Windows 7 calculator) in its place since it is more useful to me. I think paint is the only one I left installed
    • eh I'll wait for the June 2026 MVS ISO downloads which should be coming out next Tuesday June 16 and possibly contain build 8655 instead of 8653
