replication time between DC & ADC ?

Recommended Posts

hmmm .. ok i have read this it is not same what i want ..... i just want to know when we made some changes in DOMAIN CONTROLLER It take time to replicate the changes to the ADDITIONAL DOMAIN CONTROLLER .

I JUST WANT TO CHANGE THAT TIME ... BECAUSE EARLIER WHEN i made account on main DC it take more than 35-40 min to replicate to ADC .. .that;s why

Domain replication depends on what kind of link between them... over a "slow link" it could take an hour or so depending on what is in the DFS voulmn Sysvol and how many objects you have... but local replication is very fast

as for when or how long it takes, you don't control that... its all automated

actually i m doing this in my local network (home network) it is connected through LAN cables and i have also tried connecting through HUB

Not really sure why you need 2 DC's in a home network... but each to their own...

when you say its connected through LAN cables what do you mean? cross over cables between the two servers? because you really should have DC's connected into a switch for performance... read that somewhere in a MS doc a long time ago... but if you set it up in this way it should replicated within a minute or two...

Connect two servers to a hub / switch

DCPROMO one server set up DNS, assign domain name, set up DHCP (if needed)

go to other server... join it into the domain, DCPROMO to same Domain name as first server... install DNS if you want redundant...

at this point Sysvol should be using DFS between the two servers relatively fast and replication of AD objects should happen almost instantly... how did you set up yours?

You configure replication time in "Inter-Site Transports" found in AD Sites and Services. I think this though is links between sites rather than between servers. In other words you can only configure replication time between servers that on other subnets rather than all on the same subnet. I could be wrong. You can force a replication if thats what your after?

As Joel said, Win 2k and above DC's are just DC's. NT4 was Primary with Backup DC's.

]sk[ thats it, you can also download the windows 2003 support tools and use replmon.exe that can force replications over a lan. i know that for my server they replicate about every 10 mins, which is more than enough for me as I have about 9 servers all over the UK....

At home i have 1 DC and 1 ADC (i used it when my DC fails) and 2 PC which i have made then client

i have joined then through cross over cables .....

On DC i installed active directory ,setup DNS , assign domain name , DHCP also (for assigning IP address to client PC)

ON ADC done same thing which i done on DC and join there both server

Now the problem is that when i made changes in DC like create new user or make new policy it take lot of time to replicate to ADC ...... but which is by default should me done immediately

there is an open in AD to say to replicate every 1-60 mins, I did it on our servers over a 2mb link and i sent it for every 10 mins... im on holiday so can't login and tell u but i know its there!!!

ya i know there is option to change the time of replication ...... u r on holidays when will u go back ..............

Arrgh!!! It means, "another one", it's not some special term that implies the status of a DC. If you make a change on any DC in a domain, it replicates to the other DCs. That question is saying, do you want to create a new domain or add this as a DC in an existing domain.

When it says additional it just means another domain controller. All AD DC's are equal in terms of power. None of them are greater then one another apart from one will hold FSMO roles.

NT4 had a Primary Domain Controller which could read/write to its database. It also had Backup Domain Controllers which have a copy but could only read from the database. Any changes to the database happen on the PDC which then replicate to the BDC's.

I would really suggest leave it at its default time. If you change something and want to see the change replicated there and then, then I would say force a replication manually using AD Sites and Services.

but i tell you the problem i m facing that it is not replicating the changes which r made on one DC to others early it took lot's of time

Additional and another have the same meaning. I guess what's getting up everyone's back here is your offered advice but continue to ignore it.

Back on topic, if your wanting to see changes replicate to the other server then do a manual replication. I'll be honest I haven't attempted to change the default time, but then there really isn't a reason to. Can I ask what changes you are making and wanting to see replicate instantly?

i know what u r saying but i have made it as ADC .... i have selected the option of ADC at the time of installation ......

There is no such thing as an "ADC" backup domain controllers and PDC's where phased out in windows 2000 server... you just have domain controllers that are load balanced now... that is it

OK, you need to learn the proper terminology if you want to understand anyone's advice; you aren't adding a DC to a DC, you're adding a DC to a DOMAIN. You can't put anything in a DC except for services and software.

quick reply, if you need to drop me a message i've done this with work (i'v'e just migrated 400 users and 10 sites to AD/Outlook) and it went erm abit wrong but i've learnt from it, any issues just drop me a line as I'm in NZ and won't be bk from here for 3 weeks,.
