Changing Grub Bootsplash [Ubuntu]

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have completely switched over to Linux and i am now trying Ubuntu. I have got everything running smoothly. My question was how can i change Ubuntu's bootsplash ? The default one is pretty ugly. I have downloaded a few bootsplashes but i dunno how to change them. I tried googlin for an easy guide but all were too confusing. I came across splashy and i have installed it but i dont know how to use it ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thx

Are you talking about the GRUB splash? Or the Gnome startup?

The GRUB file is an xpm format, consisting of 14 colors. The specifics can be found here:

Were you able to get it to work? The important requirements are:

  • sized to 800x600 pixels
  • reduced to 14 colors
  • saved as xpm format
  • compressed with gzip
  • add splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/ImageName.xpm.gz to your grub.conf file (change the location and filename to match your configuration, of course)

Post here, if you are having problems.
