How to disable Bluetooth?

Recommended Posts

Hi, in XP there was a little icon in my system tray that enabled me to quickly enable or disable bluetooth. In Vista there doesn't seem to be any easy way to do this, other than going through device manager and disabling the driver.

Is there a way to quickly enable, or disable bluetooth functionality in Vista?

Also I like the Aero Glass look well enough, but I am not so sure I like the way that Windows/folders and files slowly sail into view when you double click them.

It just makes the system feel slow and sluggish. I prefer rapid, snappy responsive windows.

Is there a way to disable this animation while keeping the glass look around buttons and borders?

I know I could enable the non Aero classic theme - but I looked at that and it sucks.

Well if I right click on the bluetooth icon in my system tray, select open bluetooth settings, then options, there is no option to enable or disable bluetooth.

Maybe you're using software that came with your BT dongle? I on the other hand am using that native microsoft bluetooth stack and a Widcomm branded chip on my laptop.

Well wait, is bluetooth built in or are you using a USB dongle? With the built in option in your laptop (i'm guessing) you should have a key combo or a switch to turn it off. On my Thinkpad with built in BT all i do is FN + F5 and that turns BT on and off, it's almost as if it's ejected because it disappears from the device manager also as well as the system tray area.

With the dongle i guess just eject it via the eject icon in the system tray.

Unfortunately not all laptop keyboards are the same and the Samsung Q45 neither has a switch, or an FN key to enable or disable bluetooth.

I guess I could disable it via device manager. but as I said at the very start of this thread, that really completely defeats the purpose of wanting an easy to use way to turn bluetooth on and off via the system tray, just as I could with XP.

Oh and BTW, I thought I had already said, but yes it is a Widcomm/Belikin onboard chip.

well i'm sure you can get drivers from samsung directly. Normally they have some software that you can use a combo key with or just run from the start menu to enable and disable bluetooth as well as wifi.

Unfortunately in this laptop does not have that facility. Of course Samsung supply drivers - but there is no way it seems to turn bluetooth on or off other than via Device Manager.

The reason I'm asking this question is a while back before getting this laptop, I read about a bunch of people somewhere who had a similar problem. Some of the folks there pointed these people to a small freeware system tray utility that enabled them to quickly enable or disable bluetooth with a simple right click. Unfortunately I can't find that forum. or those forum posts and I can't remember what the utility was called.

Not much help I know, but I was hopeful that some of you guys might be able to point to it.

My laptop came with the Toshiba BT stack, but I'm using the Widcomm drivers and stack, although when I looked at the Widcomm options, I didn't see anywhere to disable the BT chip, only how to prevent other devices from finding the computer, and the computer from connecting to other devices.

Seems like the option would or should be there however.

Open the Control Panel, search for animation, and click on the link under Ease of Access. Uncheck the animations box and they will go away. :)

Not quite a second, but without animations it does feel a lot snappier. After using Vista with animations for a while, and going to use my XP laptop, XP seems snappier only because of the animations. As soon as I turned them off the whole system felt quicker and more responsive.
