Writers Guild of America Members Vote to End Strike

Striking Hollywood writers are going back to work.

The Writers Guild of America said its members voted Tuesday to end their devastating, three-month strike that brought the entertainment industry to a standstill.

Writers will go back to work Wednesday after voting in Beverly Hills and New York.

"At the end of the day, everybody won. It was a fair deal and one that the companies can live with, and it recognizes the large contribution that writers have made to the industry," said Leslie Moonves, chief executive officer of CBS Corp.

Moonves was among the media executives who helped broker a deal after talks between the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers collapsed in acrimony.

One winner in the vote was the Academy Awards, which can now be staged Feb. 24 without the threat of pickets or a boycott by actors that would have dulled the glamour of Hollywood's signature celebration.

The strike's end would allow many hit series to return this spring for what's left of the current season, airing anywhere from four to seven new episodes. Shows with marginal audience numbers may not return until fall or could be canceled.

"It will be all hands on deck for the writing staff," said Chris Mundy, co-executive producer of CBS' drama "Criminal Minds." He hopes to get a couple of scripts in the pipeline right away, with about seven episodes airing by the end of May.

The combined New York-Beverly Hills count was overwhelmingly in favor of ending the strike: 3,492 voted yes, with only 283 voting to stay off the job.

Writers did not vote on whether to formally accept the tentative contract that already has won approval from the union's board of directors.

The guild will mail contract ratification ballots to members over the next few days. Writers can also vote at meetings. All ballots must be cast by Feb. 25.

The union's board approved a deal Sunday giving writers a share of the growing revenue from programs offered on the internet and other new media.

Guild leaders say they were fighting for a piece of the future, reflecting the widespread belief that Internet-delivered entertainment fare would inevitably claim an increasing and perhaps even dominant market share.

The walkout stopped work on dozens of TV shows, disrupted movie production, and turned the usually star-studded Golden Globes show into a news conference.

So is this official, the strike is over? :D

Nahh, we're just yanking your chain. The writers want double what they were asking and will start imploding one by one for each hour that passes that the agreement isn't made. Oh yeah, you better believe it

The strike, if anyone is interested, lasted exactly for 100 days (or 14 weeks, 1 day) and cost the LA economy an estimated $2 billion (some are saying $1.5, so it is $1.5-2 billion). The last such strike in 1988 lasted 21 weeks and 6 days, costing the American entertainment industry an estimated $500 million ($870 million in 2007 dollars).

Shows really that money is worth alot more these days then it was back then.

Nono, it means money is worth a lot LESS. Like, even if you used the most generous numbers, it is less than 1/2 of what it was then.

Also, on the local Fox stations news tonight, they reported that 24 is held til Jan, House will be back this season, and that they aren't sure what they are doing with Prison Break yet for this season (if it will be back or not) but it WILL be back in the fall.

Sources: NBC & Hollywood Foreign Press May Sue WGA Over No Golden Globes

Isn't it moronic? I'm told by sources that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC are on the verge of taking legal action against the WGA for actions leading to the cancellation of this year's Golden Globes. Really, could Jeff Zucker possibly be more of a putz? I say the WGA should countersue the NBC Universal midget for impersonating a mogul (and the HFPA for impersonating a legitimate news organization). Maybe the time has come to see if Zucker, who's been running off at the mouth about how NBC won't make pilots, can make do without writers altogether.
Grr. Why they cancel Bionic Woman??!!! :(

Because it was a terrible show.

Yeah I am watching it purely this year to see if Juno wins anything.

astrokat - Because it was crap and the ratings were really poor.

So you'll watch all 3+ hours just for that?

Why not just read the results afterward?

No I wont watch watch it...it will be on in the background and I will just focus attention when needed.

Maybe Cancelled Shows

Even though the writers strike has now officially ended, some of this season's shows are over as well.

Here's the list of TV programs that may not make it. And to be honest, I didn't even know Cashmere Mafia had started on air already.

ABC

Women?s Murder Club

Carpoolers

Big Shots

Notes from the Underbelly

Cavemen

NBC

Friday Night Lights

Bionic Woman

Life

Las Vegas

CBS

Moonlight

Cane

THE CW

Reaper

Life is Wild

The Game

Girlfriends (according to sources, Monday night's episode was the show's last)

I really hope thats just speculation because Las Vegas is an awesome show!

I thought Life was renewed?

Well Reaper was given full season run but this was before the strike happened so that could be out the window, remember they said even new shows that had been renewed could be cancelled due to the strike and lack of episodes.

    • Microsoft's fast coding model MAI-Code-1-Flash comes to Copilot Business and Enterprise by Karthik Mudaliar Microsoft’s recently announced MAI-Code-1-Flash model is now generally available to GitHub Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise customers. With this support, organizations can have more centralized policy controls and billing while finally being able to use Microsoft’s lightweight, first-party coding model. According to GitHub’s announcement, Business and Enterprise plan administrators must enable the MAI-Code-1-Flash policy in Copilot settings before developers can access the model. Microsoft says that MAI-Code-1-Flash is for fast, iterative coding work rather than the most demanding architectural or debugging tasks. GitHub’s official model comparison page says that the model is great for "general-purpose coding and writing," while it excels at fast, accurate code completions and explanations Microsoft introduced MAI-Code-1-Flash on June 2 as part of a broader collection of internally developed MAI models. GitHub subsequently expanded support to Copilot CLI, the Copilot cloud agent, GitHub.com chat, GitHub Mobile, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, and Xcode, but said support for managed Business and Enterprise customers was still on the way. In Microsoft’s own benchmark testing, MAI-Code-1-Flash scored 51.2% on SWE-Bench Pro, compared with 35.2% for Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 4.5. Microsoft also claimed that the model used up to 60% fewer tokens on SWE-Bench Verified. Do note that these are vendor-run results rather than independent measurements. The model is billed at provider list pricing under GitHub’s usage-based system. GitHub currently lists MAI-Code-1-Flash at $0.75 per million input tokens, $0.075 per million cached input tokens, and $4.50 per million output tokens. For organizations, the main incentive to use MAI-Code-1-Flash is likely to be efficiency rather than maximum capability. A smaller model that responds quickly and limits unnecessary output is quite useful for repetitive agent tasks at scale, especially after GitHub Copilot’s move toward usage-based billing. The "Flash" model is recommended for fast work and not necessarily for huge repositories with loads of context. It's better if teams compare their output with other larger models, especially if they're working on security-sensitive changes and complex, multi-file work.
    • yes AND no the "original" or plain/normal Optiplex 7010 won't be getting any more new firmware updates BUT the Optiplex SFF/SFF Plus {small form factor}, Micro/Micro Plus & Tower/Tower Plus 7010 editions DO get new updates such as this new one   and here are similar guides from the Dell web site for Dell systems: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000390990/secure-boot-transition-faq https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000347876/microsoft-2011-secure-boot-certificate-expiration
