Play music through another computer on the same local network.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I just wondered if there is a piece of software that would allow me to play music through another computer on the network. Basically I need to stream music from my vista business laptop to a windows 2000 desktop.

The music collection is on my vista laptop. If possible I would like to be able to control the playlist and volume from the vista laptop.

Anyone know of any software?

Thanks for your help.

Chris

You know, funnily enough, i've seen this done before :p

Oh yea, it was on an Apple laptop with an Airport Express, which i hope will be my next computer setup.

But anyway, I've got a local network running through my house here (new house, so i put it in during construction), and I've been wanting to try this out through it before i go out and spend a couple of thousand bucks on Apple gear.

Thanks for the advice guys,

1) Remote Desktop to the Vista computer... allow sound to be played on your 'Remote' computer.

2) Share the directory the music is on (on the Vista computer) and add that directory to the WMP 'Library' of the Win2000 computer.

#1 acts is if you're logged into the Vista computer and transfers sounds to your 'remote computer.

#2 lets you access the media files from WMP on the Win2000 computer.

You don't need to download or purchase anything.

But "If possible I would like to be able to control the playlist and volume from the vista laptop." means you should probably go with option 1.

Wait a sec, if im reading this right you want to play music from your laptop on your desktop and control it from your laptop?

I wonder if this can be done if both computers had WMP 11 and "Media sharing" turned on so all you need to do is Remote Desktop from your laptop and play in WMP11. Just a guess too bad WMP 11 doesnt work with Windows 2000.

...but Remote Desktop can work. I do that often at home.

I find it easier to let the local computer access the media as a shared resource though. Then I can shuffle through things, make playlists and play songs by clicking in WMP on the local computer instead of logging into the remote computer and running the software there.

I know but WMP11 doesnt work with Windows 2000. WMP 11 makes it easy to share your music files (or the whole library of pics and videos) with other WMP 11 users in the same network with it "Media Sharing" feature. But that not a problem, just share the music directory like you posted.

Lol... that's basically what I said a few posts ago- share the media directory and let the Win2000 computer access that.

I hope this doesn't ruffle your chonies. :)

If you RD into the Vista computer, and have the settings for the Remote Connection set to play sounds on the local computer, it doesn't matter if the 'local' or 'remote' computer has WMP11 or not. The sounds are streamed from the remote computer to the local computer.
