Macbook (non-pro) *Thud* Noise

When I am surfing around the internet or leaving my Macbook idle for a minute or two, I hear a thud noise and sometimes the HDD would spin. I was wondering if anyone has this issue and what did you do about it? It's quite odd since I noticed the "thud" noise after updating the Macbook firmware.

What's even more wired is that, people replace their HDD multiple times and they can still hear the "thud" noise. Do you think the firmware is causing the noise?

This almost reminds me of the other Apple thread somewhere else where some mac user blamed their cat for hacking into their Macbook and deleting their Essay... ok.. maybe not that bad.. but close.

I get it too and I was also wondering. I've had my Macbook for about 5 months.

Well, From what I understand the thud noise is from the Hard Drives Power Saving features causing the hard drive to stop spinning or moving the head away from the disk to avoid damage from movement shocks (iPod 5G anyone). I have been using the normal MacBook hard drive and not had this issue, however, I've heard that on the hard drive I'll be replacing the macbooks original one with has this issue. A Western Digital 250GB Scorpio (WD2500BEVS), or something like that. I'll make sure to post information, I really doubt a firmware update would fix this, I think the best thing you could do would be put it to sleep while it's idle if it's annoying you that much.

But form a technical standpoint, there is nothing wrong with the hard drive and it should work just find regardless. However, I for one know how annoying hard drive noises can be

Yea man, thatd just be the power saving features, drive stops spinning etc. macbooks also have a sudden motion sensor which if you drop you macbook it will park the head instantly to prevent disk damage, which came in handy for me when i dropped my macbook from about 1.5meters height onto kitchen tiles, that was a thump, bent my screen a little by the looks of it, when i shut it the lid doesnt close too straight anymore :/

Go into your Energy Settings and change the setting's so that OS X doesn't power down your hard drives. See if this solves your annoying noise. If it does, your battery life may be effected. But not a great I would expect.

I ticked it off, it does not work. The noise is still there.

I don't remember hearing this thud noise when I used it on the first day. I got this 3 weeks ago.

But, since this sounds normal to some folks, do all notebooks have this? How about you folks who have Macbooks does this 'issue' affect your notebooks as well?

You are talking about a very slight thump type sound yer? like barely noticably, really subtle? If so I have heard it on mine once or twice when everythings really quiet in the surrounding environment.

I have exactly the same problem. also started after the firmware update.

have you had any luck since then?
