Battlestar's Olmos reveals why The Plan will leave you gasping

Edward James Olmos, who directed the upcoming DVD movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, told an audience of fans that the film will deliver exactly what they expect it to: The Plan shows the Cylons' perspective on their attempted genocide of humanity.

"I gotta tell you, not to give anything away, it is exactly what you think it is," Olmos said in a panel discussion Thursday night in Hollywood as part of the Los Angeles Times series The Envelope. "You see the complete opposite of the first 281 days of what we went through, ... seen through the eyes of the Cylons, and it is breathtaking. It's fantastic. It's not fun, but I will say that you will sit there [gasping]."

Perhaps The Plan will also drive sales of BSG complete-season DVDs. "Basically, you will go back to see the series again," Olmos said. "I couldn't have imagined this kind of a situation happening at the end of a show, where you would actually start at the beginning. That's a masterful piece of understanding, Ron [Moore]. Genius. Because after you see The Plan, you'll want to go back and view the whole series again."

The DVD release of The Plan will feature more than 30 minutes of additional Cylon perspective than will air in the version that will air on SCI FI. "The Plan is 2 hours and 6 minutes long the way you're going to have it on the DVD. When you see it aired, it's going to be 88 minutes."

Olmos gave credit to writer Jane Espenson, who wrote the entire script, and his lead actor. "I have to tell you right now, Dean Stockwell is a brilliant artist," Olmos said. "He does a magnificent job of leading The Plan. The Plan is exactly that. It was how they planned to do what they did and what happened. It was monumental. All I can tell you is it's an extraordinary look at the Cylons, how they masterminded what they did."

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan is due in September. (Syfy)

Battlestar Galactica’ Actor Richard Hatch Explains How A Movie Version Could Work

"Just as remaking the original “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” film without consulting series mastermind Joss Whedon is nothing short of a Hollywood faux pas, it seems equally unthinkable to forge a big-screen “Battlestar Galactica” adventure without Ron Moore, creator of the recently finished television series. This may be a fairly common sentiment among fans of Moore’s politically-minded take on the classic science fiction franchise, but it appears that not every “Galactica” vet shares that feeling — so long as the film version is done right.

Richard Hatch, who played fighter pilot Apollo in the original ’70s-era “Galactica” series and then terrorist-turned-politician-turned-terrorist Tom Zarek in the latest incarnation, tells Moviehole that he’d be keen to see Universal Studios’ announced “Battlestar Galactica” film if it took a cue from the recent “Star Trek” revival.

“I think [universal] saw the success Paramount had with their ‘Star Trek’ reboot. But unlike Paramount, who seems to know the ‘Star Trek’ audience, I don’t think Universal ever quite got ‘Battlestar,’” said Hatch. “[With 'Trek'], it was still the character we love, but they went back twenty, thirty years to when they were just kids. But with ‘Battlestar,’ they’re just going to go back to the same timeframe we saw in the series and recast those roles.”

Hatch also acknowledged that the fruition of this planned “Battlestar” adaptation is likely to be painful for Ron Moore, saying: “I’m sure [he] would love to do a film version of the new series.”

Of course, there is more of Moore’s “Battlestar Galactica” on the flight deck. The Edward James Olmos-directed telemovie “The Plan” will serve as a postscript to the show. There’s also the prequel series called “Caprica,” for which the pilot has already aired, focusing on the early creation of the Cylons. “Caprica” will launch on the Sci-Fi SyFy Network (*cough*) this fall. Hatch says that if the fans want more, they’ll certainly get more.

“It’s never the end if fans want more,” he said. “It’s a money game. If they realize people want more, believe me, they’ll make more of them — they did it with ‘Babylon 5′ and a number of other sci-fi shows. ‘Battlestar’ is not done yet, it’s just a question of how and when it’ll come back.”

Given the very definitive ending of the latest, much-beloved “Battlestar Galactica” series, it’s almost sacrilegious to imagine a follow-up to that story. What could be cool, however, is a series of movies — or even a brand new serialized TV show — focusing on the early days of Admiral William Adama and Colonel Saul Tigh during the first Cylon War. Heck, a big screen adaptation of that story could be frakkin’ sweet."

Personally, I like the new series, but I say let it go already. Now Terminator the Sarah Conner Chronicles needs to continue. Although it might not be a perfect show it appeared to open up possibilities. Switching back to BSG, the series should not have ended with just four seasons and should have continued past the finding "Earth". The original series tried to do with that story, "finding Earth" and all. BSG could have continued the battle developing two factions, the Cylons who embrace peace with humans and the rouge who do not. anyway. let BSG go already.

^ Rappy, who's the red head in the sig? She's nice looking.

I'm excited.

Weird thing is, I skipped over the miniseries. So I am actually going to watch that, then Razor, then The Plan. Weird, eh? :p

You should of watched the miniseries because the first episode after the pilot is a direct continuation of the miniseries.

you don't think I know that? That's why I was confused for the first 4-5 episodes on a lot of stuff. Like why Sharon was in two places at once.

    • This makes me think of Dune for some reason.
    • I'm too old to return to the "good old days" when I was installing custom ROMs and tinkering with my devices - now I just want to turn it on and use it. I've read that banking and payment apps work on Murena /e/OS (I'll have to check the ones I use) and I also really want to support Fairphone 😉
