SkyDiver
What I don't quite get is the real use of dreams in Vista. I'm not questioning the sense of having a beautiful desktop, but more the necessity of creating .dream files that can only be opened under Vista (thx Stardock -.-). And even better, if opened, Dreamscape will extract the video file in order to play it - so it can't be about copy protection either... Why not publish the video file from the start so that XP users can use it as well (e.g. via VLC desktop mode) instead of wrapping it in some proprietary file format that only Vista users can open (because Dreamscape only runs on Vista systems)? As for the mentioned alternatives, I had a look at DreamRender and Drempels, and they both just don't compare to the Vista dreams out there. As far as I understand it, DreamRender will even cost you 20bucks if you want to download the dreams from their site (okay, the cost of bandwith may be a reasonable request, but that's what sites like wincustomize etc. are for, no?) and I read that DreamRender will not play Stardock's dream files. There are also a couple of Programs that will display flash files on Desktop. But it just seems to me dreams are the new way to go in terms of desktop design. And what just bugs the *** out of me is that it is possible in XP and that I'm told I'd need something like Dreamscene (and thus, Vista Ultimate) to be able to use it. Just my $0.02. Island Dog
Why not publish the video file from the start so that XP users can use it as well (e.g. via VLC desktop mode) instead of wrapping it in some proprietary file format that only Vista users can open (because Dreamscape only runs on Vista systems)? A couple of advantages of the .dream format are: Authors get credit for their work Triggered .dreams Dynamically rendered wallpapers It's an enhancement to DreamScene VLC is not a real alternative to DreamScene or DeskScapes, it's a simple way to run desktop video however many people complain that it affects other things on their desktops. Vista has features that allows animated wallpapers to be possible without messing up your desktop otherwise, and this isn't something that XP really supports.
