For Samsung LNT2342H owners or similar series

Hey guys,

I recently switched my Westinghouse LTV-19w6 to a Samsung LN-T2342H but I haven't been satisfied with this unit. I was on a budget and this TV seemed so perfect since it's gotten so many good reviews about the picture quality. My primary use for this TV is gaming but sadly the picture looks worse on this TV than it did on my Westinghouse. The reason I decided to switch was because the Westinghouse had an aspect ratio of 16:10 and so, it wasn't exactly the best image on my 360 but regardless it was sharp yet stretched. Now once I hooked up my 360 to the Samsung set; I was presented with 1080i and so that made me happy as I couldn't get that to look properly on the Westinghouse. The bad came when the games loaded. They were full of jaggies that I never experienced with my Westinghouse! Whether I used component or VGA didn't matter and so I couldn't understand the reason behind this. I tried playing around with the color settings but no dice. The colors also look really saturated! I plugged in my PS3 through HDMI and while I got nicer color on the PS3, I couldn't stand the amount of jaggies onscreen. Even upscaled DVD movies look terrible (blockiness) and my friends TV set (a cheap generic brand can't remember what it was) could only do 480p/1080i but when I saw the upscaling done on his TV... I loved it! So much cleaner/crisp but what's the case with me?? Does anybody own this TV? Did you do anything specific to make it look good? Even as a PC monitor it looks crappy.

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks. :)

First off, turn your 360 to 720p as that's that TV's native resolution.

As for the blockiness issues, turn down the sharpness. Colors too saturated? The Westinghouse has poor black levels so you may not be used to the higher level of reproduction the Samsung offers. However, if you don't like it, turn off DNIe/Dynamic contrast.

Should be a menu option. Then again, I'm not sure if that option was enabled on the smaller sets. Two years ago, it wasn't available on any and they finally started giving the user the option last year, but not on every set.

You know, I thought about what you said about not being used to the higher level of reproduction and you're right. This is my second LCD TV and I've never dealt with one as bright as this one. I'm far too close to the TV from what I can tell and that made things look bad. I moved away and it's so much better. Things look as crisp as they should be looking. Sadly, I can't use this as a monitor (I shouldn't even bother with it since it would strain my eyes badly). DNIe/Dynamic actually makes things look better than worse. I just have to get used to this transition but overall... I'm liking this TV. Thanks for the comment/suggestions. Much appreciated.

I figured it was that. I know both sets very well and there's no way any sane person would actually prefer the Westinghouse lol. The thing is, when we have a TV for a long time, or any display, we get very very comfortable with it and anything different, whether actually better or worse, automatically looks worse until we adjust to it. Same thing can happen with speakers and headphones. We tend to associate different with worse by nature, I guess.
