DD-WRT / Port forwarding

Recommended Posts

In my router, running the DD-WRT firmware, I port-forwarded port 4000 and ports 6112-6119 so I could play Diablo 2 over TCP/IP.

However, this site, as well as others, say my ports are closed!

If my friends are joining my game, do all of these ports need to be opened as well, or is it just 4000?

One of my friends (who has a Mac, which I'm sure will cause some PlugY problems as well) can't seem to access his router at all. I'd like to know if port 4000 must be opened on the client's router.

An what device is your router running dd-wrt plugged into? What is the model number -- if your double natting, you can open ports all day long on your router -- an nothing will be open.

To test if a port forward is working -- something has to be listening on that port.. I have walked thru this a few times here.. Here is a previous thread where I walked thru how to test a port forward using telnet.

WHAT DEVICE is your DD-WRT router plugged into??? What is the model number of this device, I did not ask for the model number of the router dd-wrt is running on.

There must be a device that your router is plugged into. If this devices is doing NAT, then what you do on the dd-wrt is meaningless.. Do you have any other devices.. ie VOIP device, etc..

I linked to EXACT instructions on how to test if port forwarding is working.. How did that test workout?

Sorry. I wasn't able to get on in quite a while.

Anyway.

What device is my router plugged into? My PC and my cable modem? I'm not sure if there's any other way I can answer that question.

It's probably NATing.

I'm not using VOIP or any of such services. [ does BT count? ]

Also, since I last posted, all of my router settings had to be reset. I might get on it this weekend and try to do something about it. =\

WHAT is the MODEL number of your cable modem??? 99 out of 100 times when a user is having port forwarding issues -- what the user is calling a modem, is really a gateway device doing NAT.

I will ask again -- what is the MODEL NUMBER of the device your dd-wrt router is plugged into ;) This way we will know 100% if the device is just a modem, or if it does NAT as well..

The model number of my "modem" is a motorola SB4220, what are the numbers of the device your router is plugged into??

You can also look on the status page of your router -- what are the first 2 octets of the IP address on your WAN side?? If its 192.168 or 10. or 172.16-31 your behind a previous nat, an you can forward all day long on the dd-wrt router an nothing is going to get in -- unless you have forwarded traffic on the first natting devices as well.

Now was that hard? ;)

So did you run thru the telnet test I posted a link to in the other thread. The support on that device is lame as hell, the manual is a joke.. But it does not seem to do any type of nat from what I can tell

So do the simple telnet test to verify your port forwarding is setup correctly, an you can verify on your routers status page that your wan IP is not a private address.

It's a problem with DD-WRT. It refuses to forward any ports. I had the same problem on my Linksys and could never get it working. There is a pretty lengthy thread on it over at their support/discussion forums.

I just loaded the official linksys firmware back on.

yeah it helps when your forwarding to an IP of a machine listening or that is even there ;)

As to issues with dd-wrt port forwarding? Point out this thread? Im a pretty avid reader there an I do not recall such an issue -- on what version of the firmware? A beta, a RC the currrent stable version? Since the OP did not tell you with version of the fimrware they installed -- how would you know if the problem you say they are having is even with the version he was running.

I can tell you for sure its not an issue across all versions of the firmware -- Please point out the thread.. cuz I just looked over all the recent threads for the linksys hardware an saw nothing about any port forwarding issues.

An since now the OP has it working -- guess that was not the case huh ;)

If your wan IP is 172.16 -- that is not a public IP that is a private IP. Your behind a double nat.

What Modem do you have?? If your router has an address that starts with 172.,16 -- its behind a NAT and you can forward ports on the router now until the cows come home its not going to do you any good.

Because there is a NAT in front of your router -- What is the Model number of the device your router plugs into??

Well then your out of luck -- if your on a private IP, you will need to contact your ISP to have traffic sent to your private IP, put you in a dmz, etc.

If you do not have control of where the nat is happening then your not in control of what unsolicited traffic can access you.

I knew this will be the answer... But thanks anyway for your time and help!

Here is the deal - I contacted my ISP and they changed my WAN adress claiming that they have oppened these ports that I need but I am still out of luck.

These are the printscreens of my settings in router.

I even removed my antivirus software and disabled firewall and all i get is this message

And where did they say they changed it? And your routers WAN IP changed? If your routers wan IP starts with "172.16" then its behind a NAT.

So you would of had to log into your device from them and forward the ports to your routers WAN IP.

What I would do as a test is plug directly into their device and see if the ports are open.. What IP do you get from their device on your PC? If it works -- set the WAN ip of your router to this IP, and then forward whatever ports you want into your routers private IP space.. Now connect your pc back to your router and see if works again.

But I highly doubt they did anything to be honest. Easy enough to check with a PC directly connected to their device.

I wrote them mail and they answered that there is no problem to open these ports for my IP. After that I wrote them that it still doesnt work and they told me that they have opened it and that something is wrong with my settings and that I should reboot what I did earlier without their suggestion. OK, at least I am sure that all my setiings are correct :D

Unfortunately I can not create server for this damn game. I lost hours and hours trying and now I dont want to any more.

Sorry for grammar mistakes!

Like I said to check -- take your router out of the picture and connect it directly to their device.. What IP does your PC get, still a private? 172.16-31?

If so check if the port is open.

Well change your IP to dhcp and connect it directly to their device.. What IP do you get now?

Check if your ports are open..

If you can get your game to work while directly connected to their device, then we can help you get it working with your router connected.

    • WhatsApp for Android expands chat themes with 18 new colors by Paul Hill The WhatsApp Beta for Android has just been updated to version 2.25.19.2 (via WABetaInfo) bringing with it 18 new color options, expanding the selection from 20 to 38 colors. This update brings the Android app up to parity with the iOS version, which got this beta update at the start of the month. The expansion of colors will give users greater personalization options for their WhatsApp chats. You can pick the new colors individually per chat or from the settings for every chat, complementing the existing support for various custom backgrounds. How the new chat themes work To set the new colors for individual chats, just open the chat you want to theme, press the three dot menu in the top right and go to themes and change the chat color. To change the theme color across the whole of the app, just go to settings and then select chats and change the chat theme. The new colors are compatible with both light and dark modes and affect the message bubbles. Unlike Messenger where theme changes can be seen by your contact, theme changes in WhatsApp are only visible to the user who applies it. User reception and future outlook Most people running WhatsApp are using the stable version, so you won’t see these new theme colors yet, we will have to wait a bit longer for that. Even if you’re on the beta, the feature may not be available yet as it’s being rolled out. While not a massive change, lots of people like to theme their WhatsApp messages so this change will be welcomed by those that do that. The messaging app scene is very competitive, so this will help Meta retain users on WhatsApp by boosting satisfaction. If you have had a chance to try out the new themes, let us know in the comments what you think!
    • Yup, that thing. Thank you. I found it invaluable for workflow.
