network browsing in file open dialog box

Recommended Posts

Running a 2003 domain here with XP clients.

Problem: When in any file open dialog box (vlc player/firefox/notepad/word -> file -> open) I'm able to type a UNC (\\server-01) and then able to view the network and all domain computers.

Policies are set so as without typing in a UNC, there is no way to browse the network/domain.

When typing a UNC in iexplore or explorer, policy is set to disallow, and a message box pops up regarding this. This is what I want to happen in a file open dialog box.

What have I missed?

Which version of Office? There are office-specific Group Policy templates, I would have a look there to see if there if UNC paths can be disabled.

Irrelevant, never said this was an office issue. When opening _any_ file open dialog box (vlc player, firefox, notepad, etc). Should have been more clear, sorry.

Many thanks

I've the same issue, i've taken out the 'Common Dialog places bar' that is bit of a relief when only novice users are around, but still if they type in a UNC, it will display the folder. Have you fond a workaround yet?

P.S

This is not a glitch(or we are too lazy to go through group policies) in office, it is in Windows.

I think you need to hide your servers altogether to do this. See if this is what you are after.

No "Entire Network" in My Network Places

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer

Description

Removes all computers outside of the user's workgroup or local domain from lists of network resources in Windows Explorer and My Network Places.

If you enable this policy, the system removes the Entire Network option and the icons representing networked computers from My Network Places and from the browser associated with the Map Network Drive option.

This policy does not prevent users from viewing or connecting to computers in their workgroup or domain. It also does not prevent users from connecting to remote computers by other commonly used methods, such as typing the share name in the Run dialog box or the Map Network Drive dialog box.
