Don't ever enable compression on your system drive (if it is even possible, dont think it is). If you do enable compression manually compress files you dont use much. If it is personal it is better to encrypt it. Compressing a file makes loading it a little slow but with computers these days you wont notice. The compression isnt that good, not as good as WinRAR so if you want to save space RAR up the files/folders and create a solid archive. that will save you more space.

Your points are interesting. BTW I have that crappy computer hooked up to my real machine. Which has dual hard drives. 30gig each. I do have compressed my Windows XP on the first partition of the second drive. I haven't used that OS much, except to install programs. It seems to run OK. About as good as my main OS. I was just wondering if there were any disadvatages and advatages to enabling that option to compress the drive. XP allows this to occur.
