Turning on the CPU's second core.

Recommended Posts

Got a PC with a CPU that has two cores. One is active and the other is not. Here is some info on the CPU in question...

(according to PC Wizard 2008...)

Type : Intel Pentium D

Internal Specification : Intel® Celeron® D CPU 3.06GHz

Codename : Presler

Revision : D0

Technology : 0.065?

CPU ID : F.6.5

CPU IDEx : F.6.5

Microcode : MU0F6507

Number of Physical Processors : 1

Number of Core : 2

Number of Core Enabled : 1

Now can anyone tell me how to turn the 2nd core on? Surely doing so could not do any major harm to my PC.

I'm not entirely sure, but I'm guesing this was sold as a single core low end celeron cpu, and instead of spending extra resources on multiple production lines, Intel just deactivate faulty cores on CPU's that are produced with one of the core faulty in some way.

so not only won't you be able to activate it, but doing so would lead to all kinds of disaster, possibly even the end of the world :p

Melfster, if I could right now, I would. But I can't dude.

According to PC Wizard 2008's analysis of the CPU, hyper-threading technology does not exist on this CPU. Also of interest was this piece of info...

"Features Multi-Core"

Physical Processor #0 (Core #0): Apic ID 0

Don't know if it means anything though.

Device Manager also reports "Computer" as "ACPI Uniprocessor PC". I seem to be able to change it ACPI Multiprocessor PC, but would doing so be a bad thing right now?

CPU-Z has provided more explanatory information on the CPU. It's exact "name" is "Intel Celereon 347".Code Name is "Cedar Mill". Technology is 65nm. But it is the following that caught my attention the most.

The selection drop-down box is greyed out for me. The boxes "Cores" and "Threads" next to it both display "1". Does this mean I truly do not have two cores?

How come nobody has suggested that he check the computers bios. All new computers have an option to disable one of the cores. BEfore doing anything else i suggest checking the bios to see if that option is enabled.

He cpu has 1 core. What's he gonna do? Go into BIOS to enable something he doesnt have?

It is a good idea to check this but not if you've been told already you only have 1 core, hence no 2nd core to enable.

Don't think Celeron has 2 cores? i have Intel Duo 2,

Hard Disk : AVEX AX1611 CF USB Device

Hard Disk : AVEX AX1611 SM USB Device

DVD-Rom Drive : TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203D ATA Device

It's a single core. But since Celerons are using Pentium's parts that didn't passes the tests, it's probably, as writen, a Pentium D (dual core) that as been factory disabled because of malfunction on one of it's core.

This is what i'm also lead to believe.

So in enabling the second core, it'll create allsorts of problems.

Not to mention that it is a $50 CPU. I would throw it away ASAP and get at least an e2200 for $95. Just make sure your motherboard supports e2xxx's before you do.

OK, so I have the same problem. I have DEFINITELY got a dual-core PC (an AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200+), and yet I get the same problem. PC wizard says "Number of Core = 2; Number of Core Enabled = 1". CPU-Z just says that I have one core and one thread.

Here are some other things you might want to know:

- I'm running XP with SP2

- PC Wizard says that hyperthreading is enabled

- PC wizard has measured the speed of Core #1 as 2600 MHz, but the second as 0, or occasionally -2.11Mhz, and always measures the Core 2 activity as 0%

- My BIOS has no feature to switch on the other core, but says of my CPUs Logical - 2; Physical = 1 (I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to be though)

- I'm running 2 x 1GB DDR2 SDRAM

The thing is, I recently bought this PC, so I sent it back to the manufacturer when I realised that all was not well, and they said that they can't find anything wrong with the PC. They sent it back, and yet I can clearly see the problems. Grrr...

I thought I would get thoughts from everyone to check that I'm not going insane. There really is a problem, right?
