How do I disable Vibrant advertising?

Question

You may have seen this on Neowin and other sites. Colored text with a double underline that, when hovered over, pops up a description or ad. Clicking on the question mark takes you to a site where the ad describes itself at Vibrant In-test Advertising.

Question; is this the choice of Neowin and other sites to have this Vibrant crap? Or is it my Firefox that's cheating on me?

I hate these vibrant ads. Half the time 'software' or 'games' is a Vibrant ad line when I check the Software headlines. So rather than seeing the headlines, an ad gets in my way.

Can I turn off these Vibrant In-text Ads ? If so, how?

Well, for Neowin they go away when you sign in. Don't know if there's anything you can do besides that.

That may be so for Subscribers, for us "unwashed & unblessed" we still get that annoying crap when we sign-in - and it gets worse if your cursor happens to travel over one of them on it's way to clicking on something that you actually WANTED to click on to get information from when you click on it.

I don't know if this is against the rules. Assuming that the Mods will delete this if required, here we go.

There are different options based on the browser you use.

Global Alternatives:

Proxomitron (free)

AdMuncher (paid)

Browser Specific

IE explorer (get Admuncher or Proxomitron)

Opera (built in Ad blocker)

Firefox (extension called Ad Block)

Block these sites:

*.kontera.*

*.vibrantmedia.*

cheers.

cs

you can also use the hosts file, not recommended though.

i dunno what ads your talking about, the only ones i see is at the very bottom of the page, and near the very top, both of which state: ads by google. That is all. Maybe you have some spyware?

No spyware there mate. Its clever programming.

Well there is intellitext on the front page, and on random forum pages.

Side note: This is the most annoying form of advertising since pop-up blockers. If your mouse just brushes the edge of some text the massive block appears and blocks what you were trying to read, then you have to wait a good few seconds for it to nick off.

Agreed. And they don?t go away when you log in, at least not on the front page.

I really don?t know what the admins here were thinking when they put them up. They know that people here are tech savvy, and if they put up such annoying ads, most users will begin to bock ads indiscriminately of which type they are(thus costing neowin revenue from all ads). All I can imagine is that these ads pay far more than normal ads.

You cant "turn them off", they are part of the site you visit. not all sites have them, only some. theyre not browser based, i think they appear in every browser that supports them.

Actually, you can, at least in the case of Vibrant. When the popup is active, click on the question mark in the upper right. It will take you to a web page, where you can find an option to disable Vibrant popups. It doesn't prevent the ugly doubly underlined items from appearing on your web pages, but at least you don't get the popups any more.

Unfortunately, there are other such annoying popup vendors (one of which appears on this web page!) where they don't appear to be quite so civilized.

Guys, please don't go down the usual adblocker thread route. For more info, please see the Adblockers thread in the Site Announcements forum.

I generally agree with not adblocking, for intellitxt and friends though.

firstly injecting code into webpages, doens't strike me as safe to begin with, then there's the speed issues. and the fact it's worse than any popup and deceptive as hell.

I found this useful article on how to disable such annoying "keyword advertising":

http://www.helium.com/items/1436588-how-to-block-keyword-ads

I find that Google's chrome browser shows these keywords, while Firefox (with the AdBlock plug-in) doesn't.

I hope you find this useful...

no way. for me the most annoying is when im on some site and it transitions into another site. or loads a different site quickly so i have to hit back then hit stop repeatedly until it gives up.

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
