Accessing Files From Outside Router

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I need to access files from outside the router without physical acces to the computer. No, Im not a hacker or anything unsatisfactory like that. I know how to do it with programs such as GoToMyPc and Avvenu. Those things cost money and I want to do it for free. Heres my router info:

Linksys WRT54GP2A-AT with 2 phone ports.

Firmware: 1.0000

If you're running Windows XP or Vista(I believe it has to be XP Pro or Media Center Edition and Vista Business and up) you can setup a VPN http://compnetworking.about.com/od/vpn/ht/...pnwindowsxp.htm

This establishes a "tunnel" through the internet and essentially makes it look like you're connected to your home LAN. You can also setup Remote Desktop if you wish http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/m...eintro.mspx#EIB

With that router make sure that the VPN Passthrough is enabled(it is by default usually, I think it's under the security tab on your router's configuration page)

Also you may want to update your firmware to the latest version if you haven't(check Linksys's website)

This is the most effective route that I can think of.

Let us know if you need any more help

Edit: forgot to mention, you'll also need a dynamic IP addressing service if your ISP has you assigned a dynamic IP(most American consumer/business internet is dynamic, but check to make sure). You can get a dynamic domain from DynDNS.org for free and just enable the updater on your router.

If you like GoToMyPC, but don't like paying, check out LogMeIn. Basic remote control (no file sharing/printing/advanced features) but you'll at least get remote control.

I'd second Hamachi if you are looking for pure file access or possibly setting up an FTP server where you wanted to edit files.

Do you have to be physically present to install? I manage multiple computers in different cities (Same State).

Yes you do. Part of the Hamachi setup involves entering a username/password so that the machine you are installing on can join a little virtual group that you can control access to. You might be able to script the install, or create an MSI, but I've not tried since I've had physical access to every machine I've installed it on.

Cant you use VNC to install it?

Hamachi is most likely what your looking for, I use it for accessing my own network outside of my router.

Why would you wish for that, you realize the security problem if such a program existed?

You could always use Netmeeting or Remote Assistance to remotely take control of the computer and set up Hamachi, of course you would need to walk someone through setting up the netmeeting or Remote Assistance connection, but that would be your best bet.

Also, try teamviewer.com. To remote connect to a remote machine, you have them download the client app, when it launches they'll get a unique ID and a password. You download the viewer, type in the unique ID and password and viola, it connects. As long as the person on the other end is capable of clicking a link, double clicking an icon and reading numbers in a language you understand you can connect to their PC.

    • Unlike Chromebooks and Windows there is no commercial push behind it so not many devices are shipping with it, although Steam Deck is an exception here. For people into PC gaming they are working on projects like Bazzite but it is an independent thing, not a commercial push. You can play MMOs on Linux. RuneScape, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, FF14, Elder Scrolls Online... Regarding professional work, most of what people do could be done on Linux, it would just be edge cases where this isn't possible.

    • Fort Firewall 3.18.8 by Razvan Serea Fort Firewall is a simple and effective firewall application designed for Windows 7 and later versions. It offers a range of features to help you control and monitor your computer's internet access. With Fort Firewall, you can filter network traffic based on various criteria, such as network addresses, application groups, and even specific service names like SvcHost.exe. This allows you to have more control over which applications can access the internet and what type of data they can send or receive. One of the key features of Fort Firewall is its ability to limit the internet speed and usage for specific application groups. This can be particularly useful if you have certain applications that tend to consume a lot of bandwidth, such as video streaming or file sharing software. By limiting their access, you can ensure that other applications still have enough bandwidth to function properly. Fort Firewall also keeps track of your computer's internet traffic statistics, allowing you to see how much data has been sent and received over time. This information can be displayed in graphical form, making it easy to understand and analyze. Under the hood, Fort Firewall uses the Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) to monitor and control network traffic. This ensures that it integrates seamlessly with your Windows operating system and provides a reliable and efficient way to manage your computer's internet security. Fort Firewall 3.18.8 changelog: Driver: Fix connection's direction on reauth (#597). Driver: Rework paths handling (#593). UI: Show alert popup on startup too.
