How to show .mp4 thumbnail in windows explorer?

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

I love the video thumbnail shows in windows explorer included in windows vista.

But windows explorer don't show .mp4 video thumbnails , What i can change in windows vista to show it?

Thanks.

I would recommend installing FFDShow if your brave, it comes with thumbnail handlers for most video file types not directly supported by Vista.

the newest codec pack i used had option for a new list of formats to generate thumbnails for. 3.6.5 version. I wont say which one but i'm sure you can find that. I love thumnail views :)

Thanks for yours answers.

I notice you're vague, which is actually cruel and awful given how bad codec packs can be for your system. Then again, you're probably talking codedly about warez.

Still, here's a pretty well vetted list of Bad Codec Packs To Avoid:

* http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#divx

I'm probably missing some, but those identified there should clearly be avoided - in many cases, development was discontinued and old broken versions just continue to hang around causing problems.

I don't want anyone thinking they can guess what codec pack you're referring to and then screwing up their systems. I work hard to keep people's systems stable, and the horrible things codec packs do to people's systems that could so easily be avoided are just pathetic.

What you meant was that "one specific aspect of this codec pack does what you want" - you should have been precise about that, since that's the one and only piece they need to get going, and they don't need all the other garbage.

Besides the actual video codec (ffdshow, coreavc, etc for h.264) You need a directshow splitter for mp4 like Haali, which is usually included in most codec packs.

I had installed Media Player Classic - Home Cinema.

I installed Haali splitter , but i doesn't get .mp4 thumbnails in windows explorer.

I get works !!

i add these keys in the windows registry :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
	.mp4
		ShellEx
			 {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
				 (Default)   Reg_SZ	{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}

    • Just remember - Microsoft is a trillion dollar company. They didn't have to raise the price this high. They chose to.
    • PowerToys is getting a new window management utility by Taras Buria If you use PowerToys on Windows 11 or 10, you probably know that the app has quite a few utilities for window management. Fancy Zones, Always on Top, Crop and Lock, just to name a few. Soon, Microsoft will add another one, and fans of Alt + Tab should be excited. Proposed by Clint Rutkas, the module has a very simple idea: use a keyboard shortcut to toggle between windows within one app. For example, if you have four browser windows open, Alt + ` will let you switch between them just like Alt + Tab switches between all running apps. Here is the utility description from its GitHub pull request: Like other PowerToys utilities, Alt Window Cycle will offer shortcut customization. You will be able to use default shortcuts (Alt + ` for the next window or Alt + Shift + ` for the previous one) or remap them to something else. For now, there is no information on when Alt Window Cycle will arrive, so we will have to wait for the next PowerToys feature update (Microsoft usually pushes them on a monthly basis). Recently, Microsoft released version 0.100, which reworked the shortcuts guide, introduced an extension gallery for Command Palette, and more. Shortly after, version 0.100.1 arrived as a bug-fixing update. PowerToys is available on Windows 10 and 11, and you can get the app from the official GitHub repository, the Microsoft Store, or winget. Although Windows 10 is no longer supported, PowerToys developers currently do not plan to drop the now-unsupported operating system. And with Microsoft giving Windows 10 one more year in the Extended Security Update, you can expect PowerToys to remain available on Windows 10 for quite a while.
