Zone alarm does a pretty good job, however Commodo wins IMO cos its free and has many similar features ;), its Defence + feature does a damn good job. Although I will say the Zone alarm privacy options are second to none with the cookie and ad management.

EDIT: And credit to the Windows firewall, which seems to take the flak very well when you are downloading a firewall after a fresh install :p

i use a version of Zonealarm 5 in Windows XP (older version)

but now i installed Vista and the new Zonealarm sucks... the older one is incompatible. so im researching other firewalls thanks to this thread :p

[edit]

what i look for in a firewall is the option to "allow" or "deny" a program from accessing the internet at will... like what Zonealarm did.

ofcourse this is including all the other features of a firewall.

i DO have a router btw (hardware firewall?) but i have the software firewall for the sake of program control.

Blocking incoming connections is just not good enough. Say you were infected by a trojan or a worm. All your data would be uploaded or you will take part in a ddos attack and you wouldn't even know if you don't have a firewall that checks outbound traffic. Get real people.

x2!!!

IMHO, Comodo is a horrible firewall, but it does beat most of the other newbs on the list. Most users like it because it's a freeware.

To be honest, if your opinion is that then you properly don't know how to use it. Which is sad because when manually configured, Comodo is a beast.

What I do is manually put in all the rules for each application I want to touch the internet in the firewall and do the same with Defence+ like make Microsoft Office a trusted application.

Then disable all pop ups until you want you install something, then turn on installation mode.

An additional firewall downloaded is a waste of space on windows machines, the default one that comes with it is more than good enough if you know what you are doing., I'm behind a router & I use the windows built-in firewall.

Same here.

    • This 4K webcam from Acer is now only $59.99 by Taras Buria Those looking for an affordable, high-resolution webcam from a reputable manufacturer can check out the latest deal from Acer, which puts its 4K webcam at a solid price. Thanks to a 14% discount, you can buy this all-metal 4K webcam from Acer for just $59.99. Despite the affordable price tag, the webcam has a pretty large 1/2" CMOS sensor manufactured by Sony. Apart from its size, it supports additional conveniences, such as high dynamic range and phase-detection autofocus (PDAF). Plus, the camera ensures you do not have to buy additional audio equipment, as it comes with two built-in high-sensitivity microphones, a built-in background noise filter, and the ability to pick up your voice from up to 2.5 meters away. Acer is not cheaping out on materials, and the webcam is enclosed in a more premium metal case, which is also good at heat dissipation (high-resolution cameras can get quite hot). And to make sure no one is peeping at you when the camera is in use, there is a magnetic cover also made of metal. Additional conveniences include an LED status indicator and a built-in mount that lets you place a camera on a tripod.
