Metal Gear Series Plot and Character Analysis

(in chronological order)

Applicable titles:

Metal Gear Solid (PSX)

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (NGC)

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (XBOX, PS2)

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)

Non-applicable titles!

Metal Gear (MSX2, NES)

Metal Gear 2 (MSX2)

Snake's Revenge (NES)

Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (GBC, Japan, UK)

Metal Gear Solid (GBC, US)

Metal Gear AC!D (PSP)

Why the discernment, you ask? A couple reasons.

For Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, I have not personally played these games,

I only know what we learn from the 'Solid' games. Thus I only touch on

these games in general plot and not in detail.

For Snake's Revenge and the Gameboy Color Metal Gear, neither of these

two games are canonical. 'Snake's Revenge' is a bizarre, unofficial

pseudo-sequel, and 'Ghost Babel' is a sort of alternative story to the

PSX Metal Gear Solid. Niether actually take place or fit in the main

storyline.

I have recently made the discernment between NES and MSX, originally

jumbled only by my own lack of education. I'd like to thank reader Diego

for the explanation here; simply put, the original two Metal Gear games,

in all their canonical glory, are titles for the Japanese MSX2 Computer.

Metal Gear 1 was made into a Famicom (and then NES) game. The

unreleased Metal Gear 2 is still in MSX purgatory, not counting some

valiant fan efforts.

As for MG Acid, I am simply still not aware of any canonical bindings it

may have to the story of the 'solid' series. it takes place years after

the cliffhanger ending of Sons of Liberty, and there seem to be more than

a few conflicts with the overall plot of the other games. I may yet be

wrong, but so far AC!D just doesn't fit. It seems to me that Kojima has

taken a 'parallel' sort of approach to it, much like Ghost Babel.

Huuuuge article, im not copying it all here!

Very good read, even I, a seasoned MGS player, picked up some things.

It's really good guide thanks, but I would prefer if they put some pictures explaining who's who. Also there?re lots of grammatical errors, but if properly written it would be the best guide for beginners. I am one of those late bloomers to love this game; I bought my first PS2 just for this game. I haven?t played any other game of the series yet, that?s why this guide is a must read.

For pictures I think your best bet is wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Metal...ries_characters - they pretty much all have their own page with:)ics :)

I do agree with the pictures sentiment, not soo much that they are needed for the text (you can look names up yourself), but to break the text down a bit.

It is a daunting read looking :p it :p

Might have to read some of this and catch up. I was going to look at the all of the cut scenes that have been made into a movie but i couldn't find a torrent to download them all.

That's the videos taken from Berklee's site in a torrent! (torrent on his site is now dead)

There are still http links on his site, but the files are hosted on gigasize.

This is why I consider the Metal Gear series not only games but interactive art pieces. The design, plot, the narrative style and the character development are beyond game standards. I wasnt surprised when many art critics considered MGS2 the first postmodernist game. In an objective, critical point of view, they all are artistic masterpieces since they deliver their intention.

As games we can have separate opinions, I love them all but also because I understand their artistical merit and because I also enjoyed them as games a lot!

But as a friend said to me: "Some of us play games to forget about the world and relax a little, not to ponder about human condition or to be annoyed with deep character development" and thats totally understandable.
