J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

Recommended Posts

I was surprised at the showing I saw yesterday to see the theatre only about 1/3rd full. No sell outs and my local AMC even canceled a couple of showings. How were the crowds at other showings?

Boss took us out over lunch at 11AM, was full...then went to a 9PM one and that one was packed too.

I just got back from a late night showing and I am in awe. This movie was simply amazing. Everything about it felt like Star Trek, and better. I went with two of my friends, both of whom aren't Trekkies. And guess what? They both loved it! Kudos to J.J. Abrams for making such an amazing movie. I'm definitely looking forward to a sequel.

Seen it, absolute rubbish I'm afraid. Star trek is now officially an american teen, action soap, directed by morons who I doubt have ever watched an episode.

LOL what the hell have they done to the romulans? Vin diesel tattoos?

Black hole bombs? Shoot first and be damned attitude?

Sorry, that was not Star Trek, that was dumbed down over glossed CGI tosh to rake in the cash. In other words, exactly what I was expecting....

I thought it was allright. Not the best as they pulled that whole alternate reality stuff. Now they could expand on that and say any old thing and get away with it!! :p

Er that was the whole point of a reboot so the story isnt constrained by startrek canon timeline, now they have free reign to do whatever stories they want.

Poor Vulcan :/

Alternate timeline, not alternate reality. ;)

I'm a huge fan of Star Trek and I strongly disagree. I'm so glad that this movie was made. It's what Star Trek needed for a long time. A nice reboot. Now, it's more mainstream and that means more popularity. Guess what? More popularity = more Star Trek. :)

By the way, that "Expendability" image cracked me up.

Exactly, more crap, just like the latest movie which was more than enough all by itself :)

Only my opinion of course but Star Trek died for me yesterday :(

I cant think of one point in the movie where the Federation/Enterprise shot first. The Romulans were not part of the military so it makes sense that they weren't all clean cut. How is a black hole bomb any more insane of an idea then the Genesis device from Wrath of Kahn?

Star Trek by J.J. Abrams

Ok but no... I went to the teather last night and I did this after a long tme I didnt go. But before I'd begin I would like to say Im a treker... Why that?. Because to go to the cinema I have to walk 5 kilometers going and 5 kilometers back. Making this 10 kilometers for star trek in one night. Yes, Im poor and I dont have the money to have a car. Yes, was too late to take a bus. And YES I dont have friends to go with... Only the money to pay my ticket and nothing more.

About the movie, well, if you have the chance to watch it with "other" methods, do it and save money. Doesnt worth. Just the sounds effects but nothing more. Its pure CGI and a bad script. The acting? Well what could you expect from the ppl that came from tv?. No much, of course. But this movie is based on a series, so...

To be honest I couldnt stand the fact that were all aged teens (aka 20 going to 30s playing like teens, a lil pathetic) in the role that we used to see a "captain" of the fleet called James/Jim with talent to start and finish a fight. The director (??) I think he try to recreate this and more, with 'old' jokes that only the one that used to follow the series/movies could understand, if not, you dont lose a thing, its just a detail (for example when "kirk" hits with his head that part of the dock or when "kirk" 'hits' that green chick, old jokes, nu ppl).

Everthing is too white and blured that could make you sick of the bridge in no time. The poor excuse to use the real spock in this movie could make you sick too. The idea used over and over again of time travel (more on this series/movies) caught J.J. Abrams by surprise!. Hehe... Now used in lost. Oh yea, time travel, pretty original.

The movie was too long but what could you expect?. The ppl was waiting for this ages and they have to feed them. Nokia makes an "investment" on this movie. The only thing that was ok was to see that the beastie boys were alive... Somehow. The bad guy is like the last star trek movie bad guy and his ship is bigger too. Seems like hit a bigger ship and another in the space never blow up. We should keep that in mind when we go to the space and attack someone from another part of the galaxy with a bigger ship.

I couldnt get my money back because the ppl who sell the tickets went to home, it was too late. The complain office seems like was closed too (aka doesnt exist)...

I give once again my money to J.J. Abrams that never, ever would came back again...

Well... This was just my opinion that worth nothing...

What are you banging on about american teen soap, this is an origin story theres only so much they can put in 2 hours of film, i didnt see anything "soap".

LOL what the hell have they done to the romulans? Vin diesel tattoos?

Go read the prequel comics, when a loved one dies they get tattoos to symbolise the pain they are going through and as the tattoos fade the pain and anguise fades also. Romulus went pop so they all got tattoos to symbolise the loss.

Black hole bombs? Shoot first and be damned attitude?

Not black hole bombs, again if you bothered to take note during the film its all explained, a star went supernova and the red matter was used as a device to create a black hole to try and contain the shockwave. nero adapted this to turn it into a planet killer.

Sorry, that was not Star Trek, that was dumbed down over glossed CGI tosh to rake in the cash. In other words, exactly what I was expecting....

It was Startrek, i am a long time Trekkie i have all the movies and tv shows in multiple formats and the story in this film while condensed into 2 hours was more than worthy of having a startrek title. The first 10 minutes alone were well worth the admission fee.

Roflmao!

I don't like it, and it's clear you don't like that I don't but I still don't, sorry :)

Edit: My house doesn't have a basement.

Couple more random replies..

The difference between 'black hole bomb's and 'the genesis device' is that one creates something from nothing while the other creates nothing from something. A rather fundamental difference I think. And yes I did watch and hear the explanation as to where the Red matter e.t.c came from, but the romulans clearly dropped a 'bomb' into the hole they drilled and there was a definate impact from said bomb when it struck home, unless I was watching a different film?

Take a deep breath and relax.

The romulans still looked ridiculous too ;)

Come to the review thread!

While I don't think I'm feeling quite that brutal towards the film, I can definitely appreciate Malkii and Pitt's sentiments. When many comments are of the 'I hate Trek but love this film' variety, well, there ya go. I didn't feel that they completely threw out the baby with the bathwater however.

You need to state why though you cant just come in and say looloolool soap opera and thats it, you need to justify it or people will bash you like they are doing.

I don't need to justify anything.

I made it quite clear that it was only my opinion and that is indeed what I think about the film.

If people want to 'bash' me they can be my guest ;)

i got a question , if this is a prequel , and Vulcan went Kaput if we then go to Start Trek I - The Motion Picture ( isnt Spock on Vulcan planet ? ) or the next movie is going to put them back to the "correct timeline"

I did enjoyed the movie except for the guy they put as the russian one :p ( come on at accent sucked )

    • Waymo recalls self-driving software after cars enter closed freeway work zones by Paul Hill Waymo, the self-driving car maker owned by Alphabet – the parent company of Google –, has recalled some of its fifth-generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS). It did so after some of its cars drove through closed construction zones. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles were capable of driving through a closed freeway construction zone and continuing to drive at speed. The listing on the NHTSA website says that Waymo is currently developing a solution to fix this issue, but in the meantime, freeway driving is being restricted. Waymo will update its ADS software so that vehicles can detect when they can avoid entering construction zones. According to the Safety Recall Report, on April 20, 2026, Waymo’s Field Safety Committee began meetings reviewing an event from April 11, 2026, and five events from April 19, 2026, where Waymo’s autonomous vehicles didn’t recognize and drove past ramp closure signs into the pre-planned freeway construction zones. This took place in Phoenix, Arizona. Separately, on May 18, 2026, seven Waymo vehicles entered freeway lanes with active construction in the San Francisco Bay Area by driving between cones that were placed to show the lane was closed. On the back of both of these events, Waymo restricted freeway driving until it could address the issue. In June, Waymo’s Safety Board reviewed the issue and additional information related to ADS performances around construction zones; then, as a result, it decided to conduct a recall. This development is not good for Waymo as it adds to a growing list of technical hiccups its cars have experienced. Ultimately, it will lead to more scrutiny from lawmakers around the world who will be more cautious about letting autonomous vehicles on their roads without tighter regulation. For readers in areas where Waymo operates, does this news make you more wary about stepping into one of these vehicles?
    • I'm still on Windows 10 22H2 because I didn't want to deal with all the issues in Windows 11, so I waited almost a week before installing the latest Patch Tuesday update (KB5094127), I went ahead and did it, and it was a huge mistake—ever since then, my File Explorer has seen a performance drop of about 30% when transferring large files... Once again, Microsoft has outdone itself! This update cannot be uninstalled, either through the Control Panel (via Settings) or by accessing Advanced Startup Options. The only possible alternative would be to use system restore points, but I’d have to reinstall all app and driver updates (and there’s no guarantee it would work). Or there’s the “nuclear option” of a in-place repair without losing files or apps, but even then, all my customizations would be lost! Microsoft just can’t help but mess everything up! Way to go, Microsoft! But I still don’t want your c****y Windows 11!
    • Microsoft: Windows 11 could finally solve a major issue across AMD, Nvidia, and Intel GPUs by Sayan Sen While Microsoft has been trying to improve it, Windows 11 is definitely not flawless, as even today some issues are taking a year to publicly acknowledge. However, one area of trouble that may finally see much better results soon is graphics driver crashes. Work on graphics driver timeouts, also called Timeout and Detection Recovery (TDR), is not new as the latest WDDM 3.2 also has specific improvements regarding it. Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) version 3.2 is supported on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. However, with the upcoming version 26H2, TDR crash diagnosis could go to the next level as Microsoft is introducing a new DirectX 12 API feature called "DirectX Dump Files". Similar to how system memory dump files work when a system crashes or freezes or encounters any such major issue, DirectX Dump Files (DDF) will essentially record a snapshot of the GPU execution right at the moment a graphics-related crash or hang or freeze occurs, so that developers can better understand and diagnoze these TDR and timeout detection errors. The dump will be available as a .dxdmp file for analysis and it will be a comprehensive dump file generated with detailed insights about the hardware, drivers, Windows, as well as the affected application. This should be another welcome change in this department. Earlier at GDC 2026, when the technology was first debuted, Microsoft had shared more details regarding it. The company had explained how DDF is designed to gather data from every layer of the graphics stack into a single file, eliminating the need for developers to manually correlate logs from multiple tools. As mentioned above, the dump can contain a lot of useful details like GPU hardware state information such as register values, shader program counters, page fault virtual addresses, shader memory data, and command buffers. Alongside that, it also captures DirectX runtime and kernel information, including D3D objects, pipeline state objects, device error data, adapter details, and CPU call stacks. Microsoft says the feature has been built around two primary use cases: retail device removals and local device removals. The former allows developers to collect crash information from end users' systems in the field, while the latter helps QA teams and developers investigate issues on test machines. Developers will also be able to include up to 2 MB of custom application data through new D3D12 APIs, providing additional context for troubleshooting. In addition, Microsoft is introducing three dump collection modes ranging from zero-overhead capture, which has no runtime performance impact on supported hardware, to higher-detail modes that collect more vendor-specific debugging data. On compatible Tier 2 hardware, zero-overhead dumps will be enabled by default, meaning developers may begin receiving useful crash diagnostics without making any code changes. The table below explains the three tiers: Tier Description NO_OVERHEAD Enables crash capture with no runtime cost and is suitable for broad deployment MEDIUM_OVERHEAD Provides a balance, capturing additional diagnostic data with moderate impact HIGH_OVERHEAD Collects the most detailed GPU and driver state available, enabling deeper investigation at the cost of higher runtime overhead In terms of availability, the company expects broader release to be around the fall of 2026, which should be right around the time when Windows 11 version 26H2 lands. Right now, DirectX Dump Files are available as a preview and currently, only AMD has the compatible AgilitySDK Developer Preview driver version 26.10.07.02. You can find the official announcement post here on Microsoft's website.
