J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

No, I read your post. Polarized hull plating technology was introduced in the 22nd century with the NX class Earth ships (e.g. NX-01 Enterprise). Deflector shields and polarized hull plating are two different things. Let's say they did indeed refer to their shields as polarized hull plating. Why would they say something like "It's down to 20%."? In Enterprise, they always said something like "Hull plating is down." or "Hull plating is holding." They almost never referred to it in percentages. Also, different sections would go down. For example, they'd say "Hull plating is down in the aft section." I still think they had normal shields in the movie. I'm just not sure whether they were up or "invisible".

I know what shields are they are similar to the deflector array where the grid of emitters on the hull of a ship create a highly charged high concentration of gravitons to create the energy shield that dissipate energy weapons over the shield quadrant to lessen the effects.

EDIT: I did a bit of research to jog my memory and it turns out the Enterprise had shields. Captain Pike issued commands to transfer power from the warp nacelles to boost the forward shields. Why we didn't see any shield effects is beyond me (for the moment). The most logical answer I could think of is invisibility. The shields are energy based so it's safe to assume that the human eye can't see them.

I think the fact that the ship is a future ship with hybrid romulan/borg technology weapons were like torpedos they were powerful enough to punch right through the shields as from what i can remember Nero doesnt fire any energy weapons, that and borg technology has the ability to adapt to shield frequencies.

The only other thing i can think of is instead of a shield bubble the shield is either on the skin of the ship or projected not far from the outer hull.

The salvaged Borg technology explains it. We know from Star Trek: Voyager that the Borg can penetrate the shields of ships with relative ease. The shield-skin explanation doesn't seem likely. The only time we saw that was in Star Trek: Nemesis. From what I know, that type of shield configuration saves energy and is unique to the Enterprise-E.

While it doesnt pander to us trekkies its still a brilliant film and its well deserving of its no1 position, roll on films 2 and 3.

I went to see it with my fiancee last night... She hated sci-fi a few years ago, but thanks to me re-watching DS9, Battlestar and Firefly, she can now bare it, if it's good.

We got to the cinema, and she was saying how keen she was to see this. We sat down, and noticed a group of 5 incredibly hot women (mid 20's?) sat nearby... In a Trek film? How times have changed...

Now personally, I absolutely lapped it up - loved every single second of it, and the continuity (for my opinion) was just fine. So he changed a few things, and in some ways majorly so... Who cares? Part of what made Trek so dull was that they were so fixated with keeping cannon. This is a new Trek, and we can live with it. I also liked a lot of the references to keep things in-keeping... Capt Pike in a wheelchair after, for example (See: The Cage).

My GF? She loved it too. How it wasn't all "clean" like before, but how engineering was like a real engine room, etc. Neither of us had anything critical to say about it, and I was prepared to hate it! Sure some scenes were a little slow, but they felt fine. I was particularly impressed with how "kirk-like" the new kirk was! Some of the comedy moments came off a little cheesy, but then you remember, that was the relationship they had in TOS and the films.

My only criticism is aimed at the director of photography: Why so much lens flare? Every fracking shot!

And that's what I loved about it. It felt more realistic. The engine room had water pipes and coolant tanks. That feels "real". As for the lens flare, I think it was added in for uniqueness. You see it in Fringe as well, a show created by J.J. Abrams.

i remember that battle with the dominion but those ships may be an older class but i think they were updated with current edge tech and shields , they wouldn't keep flying around with outdated and dangerous ships. I ment 200 years not sure why i said 400 lol; I also remember at the end of TNG, when Riker shows up with a cloaked enterprise and his phasers blow right through the other ships like their shields arent there.

oh good ol trek debates :D

I don't think they were refitted with 24th century shield technology. Instead, they were refitted with 24th century phaser arrays and photon torpedo launchers. I think the Federation needed every ship they could get. In the battle, the Miranda-class ships were destroyed quite easily by the Dominion. I remember that future timeline Enterprise-D with the third warp nacelle and a cloaking generator. It featured a powerful phaser array that destroyed a Klingon Negh'Var warship with one to two shots.

Anyway, I can't wait to see where the story goes with this new timeline.

God do I miss DS9 now. Thank god the producers of the film said the movie doesn't interfere with ANYTHING from our already known "prime" Universe and they can continue stories there and movies/whatever if they wanted. I really, really want more DS9 damn it. But, it'll never happen now, at least not for a longgg time probably.

I'm with you on that one. :(

They need to do follow up movies for DS9 and Voyager i hated the endings for both series i want to know what happened to Sisko, did he ever return from the celestial temple? and what happened to Voyager once they get home, i have read the Homecoming and the Farther Shore by Christie Golden that deal with what happened after they got home but i dont know if its canon to the universe or not.

I would LOVE for them to do the DS9 relaunch novels which chronicle the return of Sisko and the fallout from those little parasite aliens from the TNG S1 episode "Conspiracy" (which if any of you don't know, return to disrupt Bajor from being inducted into the Federation, and you find out these parasites are related to the Trill and have been at war for centuries, it's pretty good stuff).

But, not gonna happen.

I saw the movie and I liked it overall as long as I remember it's an alternate story. I think the problem with them doing that isn't so much they decided to do an alternate version, it's the fact that this might mean the "normal" timeline of Star Trek is dead forever.

What upsets me is people who say Star Trek sucked and it was dead and needed this drastic reboot. I'll admit that it needed something, but I don't know if it needed a whole new alternate story line. IMO there's nothing wrong with the timeline/story of Star Trek, there's nothing wrong with that universe, it's just how it's been portrayed in the last 10 years by poor writing. For example, Enterprise (tv series) could have been a damn good tv show if they hadn't been so OMG let's make peace BS. They could have made Archer an even "worse" version of Kirk since this is before humans have really merged with other species and then just over time have humans change from being a wild west style shoot first species to Kirk style to Picard style where they are more peac oriented. They didn't and it sucked basically.

If they ever do come out with Star Trek that still follows the traditional storyline such as a TV series and keep the alternate storyline to the movies then I can live with that and be happy with that. I just hope that some idiots up there don't think that you can just call 40 years of tv history dead and never write about it again that would be a mistake.

As to the new storyline I hope in the next movie they bring us something new. My roommate who I saw the movie with was like he hopes they do Khan and I said why should they just recycle and basically remake all the good stuff from classic Star Trek when they can do whatever they want now. Make some new enemies, invent some new stuff. The reason why i watched Star Trek was to always see something new...Klingons have been done to death, Khan has been done, Spock dying has been done, make up some new stuff if you're going to make this whole new timeline then go full throttle with it and I can respect that. If they just want to pick and choose and remake the old stuff over then it's going to suck IMO.

If they are going to redo old stuff, they should link it to the old canan in some way. Like the Doomsday Machine from TOS, have it discovered and find out it was built by the Borg or some other well known species. They could do a ton of stuff like that if they wanted.

They kind of did though. The whole stuff about Romulus being destroyed is part of the "normal" trek universe now. Dunno if if it will expanded upon in books or whatever, but it is part of comics, and the Star Trek Online stuff.

Yeah I already knew that. But the problem is that the next movie or movie after doesn't have to link to old canon at all. In fact, JJ has said already they'd rather do something brand new and have it not connected to the old universe at all. Which I think is a mistake. But that's just me.

The collision with Enterprise-E and the Scimitar is a great example of how "weak" a ship's hull is. You may not remember this, but the Scimitar easily scraped the hull of the Enterprise-E. You could see it when the Scimitar reversed (see here). Now, imagine the kind of damage you'd see when the same hull is being fired upon by disruptors and plasma torpedoes. Take a look at this clip and see for yourself. It isn't unique to Federation ships. Watch this as well.

I wouldn't claim that the hull is "weak", after all most of Starfleet's modern hulls are tritanium plated (which as we all know is 21.4 times harder than diamond), just that the weapons are extremely powerful. It wasn't until recently that we discovered the advantages of alternating the ionic phasing polarity of inverse subspace fields. Oh, how I miss the treknobabble.

Not if Star Trek II's plot involves Spock Prime going back in time to 2233 when the Narada is about to exit the wormhole and attempts to prevent Nero from destroying Vulcan, and in the process restores the original timeline.

I thought about that, I also thought WTF is the Star Trek time corp from the 29th century to save the day...but if they did resstore the timeline then it would be a cop out IMO.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but who says, "James Kirk was a great man..." I know "but that was another life" was Nero, but another member claimed someone else said the first portion when all we had were previews to go by.

With that said, I can't wait to see this movie, just not sure when that will happen :(

Nero said all of that. :p

That's what I thought. Thanks!

You're welcome! You'll definitely enjoy the movie. It's very good. And I think that's a lot coming from a hardcore Trekkie like me. :p

Oh, snap! I didn't know Eric Bana played Nero. His acting skills went up exponentially since Hulk (2003).

I disagree, the explorers always come before the generals. Trek's primary mission has always been that it is exploration that drives us, not conquest. That was the focus of a certain other timeline. Bacula nailed the character.

    • This is how much iPhone 18 Pro could cost after Apple's price hike confirmed by Hamid Ganji Image via Apple Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed in a recent interview that the company may have to raise prices on some of its products due to the ongoing memory shortage. While he did not elaborate on the scale of the price hikes, new estimates suggest that Pro iPhone models could become significantly more expensive this fall. The Wall Street Journal and research firm TechInsights have come up with an educated estimate of how much the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro could cost after its launch in September. The estimate is based on current increases in memory and storage chip prices. For starters, the iPhone 18 Pro base model is expected to feature 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. According to TechInsights estimates, 12GB of DRAM for the iPhone 17 Pro cost Apple $39 last year. However, for the iPhone 18 Pro, the cost of the same amount of DRAM could soar to $145. Likewise, 256GB of flash storage that previously cost $13 could now cost around $51. Producing a base iPhone 17 Pro reportedly cost Apple around $582, but TechInsights estimates that the production cost of the iPhone 18 Pro could rise to $726. If Apple wants to maintain the roughly 47% profit margin it enjoys on the iPhone 17 Pro, the base price of the iPhone 18 Pro would need to reach $1,371. After standard pricing adjustments, customers could end up paying around $1,299 for the base model. However, that may not be the end of the story. As we previously reported, the iPhone 18 Pro is said to feature a variable-aperture lens, which could cost Apple at least 50% more than the current camera system. The estimated $1,299 price tag does not include the additional cost of this upgraded camera hardware. Once that expense is factored in, the base model could cost at least $1,399. A $1,399 price tag for the base iPhone 18 Pro would represent a significant increase over the current $1,099 starting price of the iPhone 17 Pro. If Apple wants to keep its upcoming iPhones competitive, it may need to accept lower profit margins.

    • Google Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving for OpenAI by Pradeep Viswanathan Noam Shazeer is best known as one of the co-authors of the 2017 “Attention Is All You Need” paper, which introduced the Transformer architecture that now powers most large language models. He also worked on several major Google AI projects, including LaMDA, before leaving the company in 2021 to co-found Character.AI. He also authored the Sparsely-gated Mixture of Experts (2016) paper, which is popular among the AI community. After falling behind OpenAI and Anthropic a couple of years ago, Google brought Shazeer back in 2024 as part of a major deal with Character.AI. Through this deal, along with Noam, several other researchers returned to Google DeepMind. More recently, he was a vice president of engineering at Google and a technical co-lead for Gemini. Today, Noam Shazeer announced on X that he is leaving Google and joining OpenAI. In his post, Shazeer said it was a difficult decision to move on, adding that he was proud of the Google team and what it had built together. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed the move with a post of his own, saying Shazeer was one of the people he had most wanted to work with since OpenAI’s early days. Google has made strong progress with Gemini over the past year, closing the gap with OpenAI in several areas. But losing Noam Shazeer is a major talent setback for them, especially after bringing him back less than two years ago by spending a fortune. For OpenAI, the hire adds one of the industry’s most experienced language model researchers to a team that is already pushing ahead with ChatGPT, Codex, and its next generation of frontier models.
