J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

Recommended Posts

I disagree, the explorers always come before the generals. Trek's primary mission has always been that it is exploration that drives us, not conquest. That was the focus of a certain other timeline. Bacula nailed the character.

i further disagree? lol. Starfleet is first and foremost the defense force and military. Kirk in TOS had that down almost perfect IMO and this new Star Trek movie brought that element back, but Archer and Enterprise didn't start doing that really until the 3rd and 4th season as which point it was too late.

Now the element of them exploring in a military ship makes sense, since new technology usually always military developed first and I don't fault that, I fault the tree hugger mentaility that Archer as a human captain already seemed to have, that somehow none of the captain's in Kirk's time had, that pretty much all the captain's in Picard's time had...you see what I mean?

If you look at how the universe of Star Trek is portrayed Kirk's was a much more aggressive shoot first, ask questions later style whereas Picard's was we don't need to shoot first. The had a chance to make Enterprise be a super aggressive show that I think most of the people who watched it wanted, but instead choose to make it "yet" another peace loving Star Trek. I'm not saying the show should have been all violent but there was a certain killer instinct that IMO should have been there, but wasn't.

Fantastic film! As a huge trekkie I had to loosen myself up before seeing it to ensure I enjoyed it without knit-picking every little aspect. Certain things were a bit of a shock relating to huge changes in the timeline but if the franchise is going to prosper and continue to release new movies - we're gonna have to accept that major changes had to made to ensure it went mainstream enough to yield enough revenue for the studios to warrant further stories.

I just at the moment find it hard to decide whether I should consider this an entirely new entity, as quite obviously the following series would essentially be entirely different.

I also did miss some of the nerdy filler conversation from other Trek's (RED MATTER? HELLO? MORE EXPLANATION PLEASE!) - I think a directors cut version with an extra hour of these scenes would satisfy this fix!

OOO OOO OO, did anyone else catch the reference to Enterprise... scotty's unfortunate incident involving Admiral Archers' prize pet Beagle. FANTASTIC!

9.75/10!

Can't wait 'til the next one! Up until then I guess I'll have to satisfy myself with seeing this a few more times! :p

Seriously? I hate to drop on you but I think you are getting Kirk confused with his namesake in the new timeline. So really, you wanted a super aggressive, violent Trek? Again, they did it for two episodes, enjoy em. Kirk was never fraking Solo, your character summations are off the mark and are commonly perpetuated stereotype.

Starfleet has been shown to handle diplomatic, scientific, and defense missions, although their main mandate seems to be peaceful exploration in the search of sentient life.

Don't make me recite the ****ing opening mantra.

I know what shields are they are similar to the deflector array where the grid of emitters on the hull of a ship create a highly charged high concentration of gravitons to create the energy shield that dissipate energy weapons over the shield quadrant to lessen the effects.

If you look at episodes of the TOS, the Enterprise rarely if ever just randomly went exploring for the hell of out. Most of the time they were heading from one starfleet base to another, investigating disturbances, or finding out what happened to ship a, colony b, etc. In the process of the investigation they explored stuff and found out new things but for the most part they were doing functions reserverd to a military ship, hence a more militaristic captain and crew. So yes I would expect an earlier version of the timeline to be even more so. People seem to forget that Starfleet had science ships that did the random exploring, but that the Enterprise is and always has been a battlecruiser, it is a military ship. If they want to make a show about exploring, then make a show about the USS Grissom, but if you're going to make a show about your most powerful battleship I expect them to shoot first and ask questions later.

I am too young (19) to have seen any of the previous Star Trek stuff so I didn't know about this movie. I just figured I wouldn't know what is going on. I watched the movie and was pleasantly surprised, it was pretty good without getting too deep into the Trek world.

Seeing Quinto in something other than his Heroes role was cool too.

Yeah with Angels & Demons coming out this weekend, I hardly expected Star Trek to remain #1. Certainly a solid #2 especially with the world of mouth going with the movie. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the final numbers for the weekend are VERY close together. I can see A&D doing like 55 or 60 million by Sunday, and Star Trek will do about 50-55 million more than likely. You gotta figure if a movie does between 15-20 million on a Friday, then it can easily do 25-30 million on a Saturday and add another 5-10 on Sunday.

I mean really, if those numbers hold up for Friday, the two movies are about 4 million apart.

    • Zed 1.7.2 has landed with updated OpenCode models, bug fixes and other improvements by David Uzondu Zed 1.7.2 recently landed on the stable release channel, bringing a host of AI-related features including automatic context compaction and settings-based skill management, along with other things like better Markdown preview rendering and custom git commands in the graph view. Starting with the AI stuff, the developers introduced "/compact", a command that basically summarizes your conversation history on demand. This tool prevents your active chat window from hitting token limits by compressing older parts of the dialogue into a brief overview. In addition to that, the team relocated skill management to the settings UI, improving how the application communicates errors regarding those skills, and updated the OpenCode model roster to support DeepSeek V4 Flash, MiniMax M3, Qwen 3.7 Plus, and Nemotron 3 Ultra Free. External agent users can also monitor context window cost metrics and delete individual sessions directly from their history. Right-clicking ref labels in the git graph now opens a context menu that runs different actions against selected targets, kind of how VS Code does it. Here are some of the bug fixes this new release brings: The active agent fails to auto-select when creating a new git worktree. A scrollbar unexpectedly appears on wrapped code blocks in the agent chat. Collapse indicators for project headers appear when performing sidebar searches. Bracketed ellipsis title prefixes fail to show the ellipsis icon properly. Project icons render incorrectly in the recent projects picker. Diff hunk controls appear inside non-editable commit view multibuffers. The software update button hangs indefinitely on the downloading stage. Restoring an agent terminal in a remote project triggers a sudden crash. Splitting a pane that contains an active commit view causes a crash. Linux Wayland freezes when trying to read the clipboard from laggy external apps. Zed is a "newish" code editor trying to break the massive stronghold VS Code has on the developer community. Funny enough, the editor was created by former GitHub employees who worked on the Atom text editor (which Microsoft killed in 2022, several years after it bought GitHub). The project officially hit version 1.0 back in April, introducing platform parity for Windows and Linux alongside deep support for DeepSeek-V4-Pro.
    • 26H2 absolutely will support ARM Windows just not on devices that came with 26H1. This is evident by the fact I am running 26H2, which on my MacBook Neo and Surface Pro 12 (inch), within a VM.

    • The FIFA World Cup is not US centric.
    • It’s amusing how Microsoft is pushing IT admins as if this was a major, game-changing update. In reality, it’s just an enablement package that bumps the build number, which is disappointing compared to the more substantial 22H2 and 24H2 releases. Technically, 25H2, 26H1, and the upcoming 26H2 are essentially the same, differing only in support schedules. They could have included the Windows K2 improvements here, but chose not to. The era of Windows being in the backburner continues, and this 26H2 release feels like an afterthought. Shame, Nadella, shame.
