J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

Recommended Posts

No it hasnt been dated yet, its only just come out in the cinema 3 weeks ago i wouldnt expect it for another 2-3 months at least.

Thanks, I rarely go to the cinema, I prefer to watch movies in the comfort of my livingroom. Even If I have to wait ages for a dvd release.

I'm pleasantly surprised overall. Thought it could have used a little less action (keeping in mind it's Star Trek), even though the pacing was well done.

Loved the bridge of the Enterprise, hot Uhura, visuals were great. The casting was near perfect IMO, especially Karl Urban.

One thing that irriatated me was the whole captaincy issue. Kirk went from unassigned cadet to acting First Officer, and then from cadet to Captain. Come on...surely they don't hand out commands that easily... Not so easy suspending disbelief here.

I loved this film! Sorta sucks that he's discussing remaking original movies and storylines now though. I don't mind the whole alternate universe thing but I don't think he needs to deviate from canon too much, work with what's there already!

Nothing wrong in re-making the original films under the impression that it's in a different Universe, could be quiet good. :)

finally went to see it last weekend, it was amazing. Best movie ever! not just saying that because I love the trek, it was he best movie experience I have had since casino royale. all the characters were perfect!

the only quibble I have is the lighting on the enterprise, does JJ have some sort of lighting obbsession? what was with all the bright lights?? apart from that damn, WHAT A MOVIE!

lala laaaaalaaaa la la laaaaaaaaaa....

I thought I would post this here, it explains quite well what is really going on in the Trek universe. Both the "Prime" and "Secondary Prime" universes.

Beware, this may contain spoilers if you dig into the Star Trek Online website a bit, as they go into detail with events leading up to the launch of the game (which takes place in 2409).

In the movie, two characters travel back in time from the year 2387. When Nero arrives in the year 2233, he disrupts the time continuum, creating an alternate reality from the point of his arrival. Star Trek (the new movie) takes place in this alternate reality. This is explained in the film in a conversation between Uhura and Spock on the bridge of the Enterprise.

Star Trek Online is set in the "prime" Star Trek reality. This is the timeline of the five television series and the first 10 movies. It is the world in which the Gorn attacked Cestus III, Kirk fought Khan in the Mutara Nebula, Picard explored the galaxy, the Federation fought the Dominion War, Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant and Captain Archer and the crew of the NX-01 showed us how it all began.

Events in the movie that happened in the prime timeline (the destruction of Romulus, and the disappearance of Spock and Nero) have affected STO. You can learn more about the aftermath of these events in the Path to 2409 and in STO itself.

So how can the movie and STO be in different realities? When working on Star Trek, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman referenced the theory of quantum mechanics, which allows for the simultaneous existence of parallel timelines and universes. Parallel universes are self-contained, separate realities that exist as a consequence of different choices and outcomes. This concept was explored in the TNG episode "Parallels," in which there were thousands of alternate timelines (and thousands of Enterprises!). It also is seen in the Mirror Universe, which is a darker take on the world of the Federation.

There are many, many stories to tell in the prime universe. The fallout of the destruction of Romulus and the upheaval that causes in the Alpha and Beta quadrants creates storytelling opportunities that we at Cryptic didn't even imagine when we first began working on STO. We're excited by the possibilities, and fans should be as well. The best is yet to come.

I really haven't paid much attention to the "prime" star trek honestly since they cancelled Enterprise, but just my opinion that's kind of weak they decided to destroy Romulus. The romulans were always an interesting race to me and I think Enterprise (archer) did them very very well. Plus in the later verse they started to be semi more peaceful and it's like a slap in the face IMO to just decide to wipe most of them out.

that said I hope the Star Trek Online game doesn't suck, I don't see it being anywhere near s big as WOW or kotor, but I think if can still get some good numbers and if it can pull at least 500k subs in then it should be fine.

Well, the developers have said (along with the guys who did the new movie) they chose Romulans for all of this because they were an interesting race, and not alot was ever really done with them. Just because their planet was destroyed (same with Vulcan in the new movie) doesn't mean the end of the Romulans. Outlying colonies, secondary bases, space stations, sleeper ships, regular ships (including many military ships) etc plus the normal Romulans off-world like ambassadors or tourists etc.

I'm just not happy with the fact they are making Klingons an enemy again. After all, Martok is STILL Chancellor, and he's very close with several Humans and I just don't see him ever going to war with the Federation.

yeah I understand that..but Billions of a race compared to thousands changes everything. you instantly go from empire building warmongers to only reproducing. It'll just be interesting to see how it's portrayed in the game.

as a side note I hope they didn't kll that fine piece of romulan tail from Nemesis..the military officer.

I think she's actually mentioned in one of the log updates on the STO site. I think she was commanding a warbird when Romulus was destroyed and thus still alive and kicking.

*edit

And yes it changes everything, which is the point. How many storylines have they done with Klingons now (including STO now as well, though it leads into a bigger story) and even the Cardassians? Borg? Ferengi? No one wants to see the Ferengi the main antagonist in a movie or game. Plus, Rom is Grand Nagus and would never do something like that lol

Borg? Ugh, we've seen them enough already. Plus, they are in STO. Cardassians are (and it's continued in STO's storyline) a broken race, still rebuilding after the Dominion wiped out their entire planet practically.

Like the STO guys said, there are many, many stories still to be told in the main Trek universe.

well they could have made a new race too. do the aliens who controlled the xindi?? from Enterprise..idk the universe is big.

I doubt anyone playing a ST MMO would want to see those aliens in the game lol

Personally I would have loved to see a Q or possibly an explination into the aliens from TNG who seeded life on Earth, Cardassia Prime, et al. I think that one could be an awesome storyline for an MMO based on ST.

I'm just glad they addressed the "alternate reality" crap finally, as the movie makes it quite clear twice at least that the events in the movie are in a seperate alternate reality from the main Trek universe as we know it. I just hope Paramount can see fit to continue stories in the TNG/DS9/Voy/Ent universe still. But I'm sure they won't, as it will "confuse" new fans from the movie and they don't want that.

Personally, I loved the film... Been a star trek fan since I can recall, though not a die hard trekkie, but a trekkie to some extent...

New spock and prime spock FTW!

I finally saw this movie today and I really liked it. A sequel is definitely coming. I have been a so-so fan of Star Trek but this has really got me hooked on.

First Details On Star Trek Movie Blu-ray ? including Features and Deleted Scenesb>

The first details for the Blu-ray edition of the 2009 Star Trek movie have come out of Europe, complete with a release date and list of special features (including deleted scenes). Although Paramount Home Entertainment will not officially confirm any details, TrekMovie and the Digital Bits have confirmed with sources that the reports are (for the most part) accurate. Details below.

TrekMovie has previously reported that there will likely be three home video versions of the Star Trek movie: standard widescreen DVD, special edition DVD set, and special edition Blu-ray. The details out of Germany from Filme-Bluray.de and AreaDVD.de are for the Blu-ray, but could also apply to the special edition DVD set. Bear in mind that there can be variations between different regions, and also this is not an official release from Paramount, so this should not be considered final.

    • Maybe it's just my old-school soul talking, but I’ve always felt that games aren't 'real' games until they hit the PC. Leaving the PC community out at launch just doesn't sit right with me. That being said, I'm probably going to buy the PS5 just for the fun of trying it out.

    • Rockstar confirms Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders begin next week, unveils cover art by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The release date of Grand Theft Auto VI has moved quite a lot since its original announcement in 2023, but it finally looks like the game has found its final launch slot. Rockstar today had a new video upload on its YouTube channel, and while it wasn't a new trailer for the game, the company revealed two things. This was the pre-order kickoff date for Grand Theft Auto VI as well as the game's official cover art. The company revealed that June 25 is when fans of the series will be able to pre-order their copy of Grand Theft Auto VI. Pre-orders will be available both digitally and in retail stores. The newly unveiled cover art shows off the two new protagonists, as well as a few more characters that are probably vital to the campaign storyline. Shots of vehicles players can use like a light helicopter, motorcycle, sports car, and speed boat are also seen here, alongside a shot of a crocodile. "Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them," says Rockstar describing the campaign's protagonist duo. "But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive." Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 on November 19, 2026. A PC version has not been confirmed yet, though it's expected by many to land after the console release. When asked about this, the Take-Two CEO says it considers the core audience for the Grand Theft Auto franchise to be on consoles.
