Since my inept computer cannot run Compiz, do you know of any that do not require a composing manager?

I feel your pain. Mine struggles too. There are alternatives to Compiz. Xcompmgr will do the job, but you won't have any other special effects. I had a small issue with the log off/shutdown dialog box though. The latest version of Metacity includes compositing too, but again, I found a few niggles. Maybe it's too new... or maybe this laptop simply can't handle compositing at all.

Perhaps the easiest option, as esquiso already mentioned, is to simply use a transparent gnome panel.

I found a compiled version of 1.2 in DEB, but it requires libwnck18. My system has 22, but it doesn't seem to want to accept that version. It doesn't even see the required version even after installing it. I tried compiling it from source, but it gives too many errors as well. What files are required to properly compile SimDock?
