Network Bandwidth Monitor..

Question

okay, well .. my household is having an issue about our internet, we have 25 gb download/upload cable per month but we get "capped" in like 3 weeks.. i just need a bandwidth montior that would .. montior the whole network from just one computer.. is that possible? if so then show me some links.. i just want a program that would keep logs of what IP address is using the downloads from the router each day.. well .. appreciate it if you post up links.. thanks .. props.

EDIT: we have about 3 (sometimes 4) computers running everyday pretty much download, surfing on the net etc.. 3 windows and 1 iMac.

If you have a Linksys, or compatible, router, you can try DD-WRT - it has a built in bandwidth monitor I believe.

Otherwise you'll have to setup a PC between the network and the router with a bandwidth monitor on it but I wouldn't know how to do so.

As already suggested -- if you router runs 3rd party, its quite possible to report on traffic.. dd-wrt would use the Rflow collector to give all the details you would want on what the machines are doing on your network.

Depending on what your running as your gateway, ie if a linux distro -- just setup something like bandwidthd

http://bandwidthd.sourceforge.net/

Then it's as simple as hitting a webpage when you want to look at traffic -- this is just a package you click to install if running pfsense as your gateway.

It could run on host that is not the gateway, if your using a HUB, etc.

To report on traffic for your whole network, you need to monitor at the entry/exit point of your network -- ie the router, gateway or if your using a proxy that that all traffic flows thru -- you could use that to report on traffic.

If your not able to use a tool at the gateway of your network, they would would have to install something on each machine to report traffic. Something like networklimiter, etc.
