Why can't people spell right on the internet?

Recommended Posts

Now I know people shouldn't be too picky about this on the Internet, but some people just make me pull out my hair. I'm not talking about slangs or words like millennium, psychology or tyrannosaurus rex. I'm talking about these.

- Am-I'm

- To-Too-Two

- Where-were-we're

- There-they're-their

- Know-now

- I-eye

- Your-you're

- Here-hear

- Off-of

Am I the only one who gets extremely annoyed by this?

The one that bugs me the most is "were" and "we're", because it's completely different. Now, I know that it's the norm on alot of sites/games etc to leave out punctuation, but leaving out the ' is COMPLETELY different :p

I don't know what you mean with "I - eye". Hear-here is another annoying one.

Or how about "should of" instead of "should've"?

Very veary simple reason. Most people still use IE, and there is no spell check in these boxes. When I want to sound credible, eye copy-paste in to Word :-p

Oh, haha, your post is about word usage and grammar: get the title right!!1!!eleven

True, but I'm picking on the most simplest thing. Stuff you're suppose to know before leaving the 4th grade.

I agree....

How is it possible that people cannot properly spell the words they use everyday?

How is it possible for someone who speaks 'English', of the American dialect or otherwise, to not know the words they use?

*edit-

To the OP: I think you meant "Why can't people on the Internet spell 'correctly'."

"Internet" is a proper noun and should be capitalized.

You should never end a sentence with a prepositional phrase: "on the Internet".

:D

It annoys me in some way, but in others it doesn't. For the most part, it's just like someone here said - there is no spell checker in IE. However, I do find it strange people do not take at least a few seconds to check what they've written first before posting. It's not that hard, is it?

Considering that you can take your time to word your conversations/school paper/reviews/newsletter/etc. before sending it in, I find the present situation amusing.

Scirwode

First of all I have to agree with your sentiments, I am also of the opinion that people on the internet have all the tools available to avoid looking like an uneducated yobbo! That said, the thread header should read: Why "can't" people spell correctly on the internet? And not:

Why can't people spell right on the internet?

The is also a BIG difference between the word ?your? ?you?re??re>"Your&quotour", as in the first sentence, meaning: You is the second person singular and plural pronoun in Engl>yourb>yours or what have you>youyour d>You'r're being very noisy today&>you aryou are being very noisy today!

There are many of these spelling errors that come to mind beside the ones that you have highlighted. Thanks for an excellent post!

How about alot - should be 'a lot' ;)

lol u gaiz r juz 2 pikie

I guess that you are being "funny'! (Funny ha ha and not funny peculiar!) It is not really being [sic] ?pikie?. Speaking and writing correctly defines your character when you interact with people on the Internet. The reason I say this is because you rarely get to meet the person you are talking to and because of this, you tend to create an image of the person that could be way off the mark!

Imagine emailing a resume' or some other correspondence to someone and that person already knows you and your 'net presence.

Things like those spelling errors don't annoy me too much. However, large blocks of text without periods or commas are very frustrating to read.

Don't forget about "through" and "threw." :D

I am not really following your logic, but so what..................!

Well, people like me that have not English as main language and don't take English courses will obliviously make errors. Sure FX Spellchecker helps, but it don't give me the right answer out a multi-choice result.

It can't be helped ^^; (Unless you want to pay me for Advanced English Courses)

It annoys me quite a bit but I have done it myself. I always do my best to scan things before I post but I still miss things.

I also hate when people say "I could care less" when they're trying to say "couldn't care less".
