Why can't people spell right on the internet?

Recommended Posts

I can spell right!

R-I-G-H-T See? :D

I agree with you, it gets annoying when people use rotten grammar.

Damn you! I was searching though the posts to see if anyone had already posted this. My comical genius has once again been unrealised. Hope you're happy.

Now I know people shouldn't be too picky about this on the Internet, but some people just make me pull out my hair. I'm not talking about slangs or words like millennium, psychology or tyrannosaurus rex. I'm talking about these.

- Am-I'm

- To-Too-Two

- Where-were-we're

- There-they're-their

- Know-now

- I-eye

- Your-you're

- Here-hear

- Off-of

Am I the only one who gets extremely annoyed by this?

Well, here in Norway, the English education in our schools is one of the best in world.

It's more a second language than an auxiliary language.

Still, the this sms/msn world of ours, good education does not help when people are LAZY,

and cut down you to "u" and other abbreviations.

One word that most people get wrong, which frustrates the hell out of me, is "lose" and "loose". "I don't want to loose my sanity"

That annoys me one hell of a lot and also when people make up words like.. "wouldent" and "couldent".

AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I think mistakes are fair enough, when it's an entire paragraph though then it's pretty bad if they are a native English speaker. What bugs me the most is all the 'teh' and things like that. I don't see what's funny about it at all, it just makes you sound about 5 years old.

None of this bothers me at all.

There are all sorts of ways to speak and write. I almost never have problems figuring out what people mean to say whether they write the Queen's English or something sort of like it or something very different from it.

PS These sorts of thread annoy me because they make me pay too much attention to my own writing

PPS I would like to know, though, what the difference between 'which' and 'that' is.

Little grammatical or spelling mistakes don't bother me. What does some of the laziness that goes on. Some people can't even take the time to spell check, capitalise and format their posts into something vaguely readable.

Just thought of something else. People who have to use tags in every sentence of their post. It drives me mad.

Very simple answer. Todays schools don't teach students crap and most students don't pay a lick of attention anyway.

"THEY'RE" to busy talking on cell phones, or listening to "THEIR" ipods, or playing "THEIR" portable games.

In other words,

Half of the students today, would probably be classified as illiterate, in the days I went to school.

It's a little annoying, but hey -- it's only the Internet.

Any idiot can get on a computer.

I remember one guy who spelled I'am ... he would never believe me when I told him it's spelled I'm.

the only one that **** me off to a large degree are those that either:

a) Do not use paragraphing (or worse, sentences). Also those that put a line break after each sentence.

b) write all in caps (or alternatively in a non default colour or size)

Either of the above is a quick way for me to close the tab and read something else. Spelling I can often forgive as long as I can get the general gist of it, especially online. But poor presentation through the lack of sentences, paragraphs ect is unforgivable. I don't even mind if the paragraphs aren't logically split into their own "theme" as is standard, as long as there isn't a full page with a single block of text I'm happy.

I suspect it's for the same reason that many can't form correct sentences, or punctuate correctly.

When you wrote, "Why can't people spell right on the internet?", you could have written "Why can't people on the Internet spell correctly?", or "Why don't people spell correctly when using the Internet?" (I'm ignoring the obvious fault with that question.)

There are several ways that you could have formed the question. You, ironically, (and yes, for once, this is irony being used in its correct context) managed to mess it up.

For the most part, it's pure laziness and a lack of respect for the reader. The author, in such cases, seems to expect the reader to take the time to put up with, and decipher, his or her errors, instead of taking the time to correct them at the time of writing.

English isn't my first language, but I still get annoyed by people who abuse it.

I'm not a perfect English speaker/writer, but you'd expect that people with English as their first language should at least speak/write it as well as I do.

I feel the same way. I always thought that native speakers should have the advantage (logically), but when talking about English and USA citizens, that logic fails for some (and I say so since I haven't read anyone from the UK write so badly).

I think what has happened is that before the internet, forums, MSN where we use a full keyboard to type became popular people used to text. In order to get around the low character limit and to speed the task up, as typing on a phone is a lot slower than a full size keyboard.

Trouble is these people have it so drilled into them they have transferred it to the computer/internet as its how they type. What is more I was talking to someone who said in order to "be cool" I am meant to use this text talk. I thnk ppl r 2 stuk in their ways 2 chnge.

I read somewhere that a percentage (I forget the figure) use "txt tlk" in their GCSE exams (Taken at the age of 15 in the UK) as its all they know. Oh well, the world will change. I use full sentences on MSN like I am in this post and it doesn't bother me, but that is because I am a very fast typist in comparison to most.

PS I'm 16.

I actually often type "of" instead of "off" usually because I'm typing quickly and not paying much attention, don't hit that "o" properly the second time around. I imagine its the same for many people...

That's a lame excuse considering the text remains on your screen until you click the submit button. Type it in as fast as you like then read what you actually typed and correct spelling and grammar errors before submitting the post.

There was a previous post on this site from someone asking for professional help at their place of business. How can one be taken seriously when there were six spelling errors and two grammar errors? I told him to get back with us when he completes the fifth grade and can write at least one sentence.

Perhaps i just use the net too much, but i was under the impression that "should of" is acceptable, while not as perfect as "should have" or "should've", i still wouldnt neccessary call it bad English.

unacceptable(!)

The worst are these people:

"That guy was crazy, I mean pysicho (I don't know if I spelled that right???)"

If you know you don't know, open up a new tab and look it the **** up, lazy ass! :argh:

I wholeheartedly agree. Its not rocket science. I'm such a pedant and as such will ensure that 98% of what I type is grammatically correct as well as right from a spelling point of view as well. How hard is it to google things?

The only time that errors are acceptable is if the person is not a native speaker. I learnt to spell between the ages of 3 and 11. Were these people asleep during this time? Its not idiocy because its not that hard - its laziness and I can't bear it.

GRRRRRR!
