default user and possible virus?

Recommended Posts

okay, i was trying to get onto my desktop through my parent's desktop. I went through My Computer, C, then Documents and Settings. Well, then i see Default User. It's a hidden file. I've never seen it before at all!

So I think, well, it's probably nothing, but then, I go into my folders and and i see ntuser.dat. Well, 1 is a .Dat file and the other is a text document. When I open the text document, this is what I see

Only, where it says my name here, it's actually my name. It's like this with my sister's log on, and my parents.

I also see something called ".plugin140_01.trace" what in the world is a .trace file??

nothing to worry, its :Dat windows:Dses for, setting up new users and where i keeps your settings "wallpaper, vs, colers oin use, recently used files, etc" don't del thous files, or you won't be able to login, as it also contains info about and for the log in screen :D i helped :D

default user isn't anything special (not really anyway) it just holds the settings for a new user. each user has that ntuser.dat file; i think it has the specific settings for eacher user (background, color schemes, fonts, etc...)

if you think you have a virus, do a virus scan. :)

(free online scanenr)

then why has it only just now appeared?

it basicly your reg, and the reg changes all the time, and if your asking about the file, it was there since you installed xp, you probbly didn't notice it before, maybe because you had the setting for hidden folders and files un checked till now, btw it is normal

which file are you seeing that in?

just run a virus scan.......

My Computer\ C:\\Documents and Settings\Jessica

it's called ntuser.dat, and it's a text file

and i'm going to, that's what i'm doing as i type

it's not really a text file. it's a .dat file. you can just open it up in notepad (just like you can open up pretty much anything in notepad, it just doesn't always make sense).

and it's always there. you probably haven't seen it before cause it's hidden.

so i must have changed the settings so i could see hidden files, but i'm not for sure how i would have done that! lol

so, how can i change it back, so i CAN'T view hidden files?

in XP....from any folder...

go to Tools | Folder Options | View Tab | Do not show hidden files and folders

    • It seems I was wrong. Modifying the registry manually does not have an effect at all, even after restart. Just use ViveTool for now. I'm going to need to investigate this...
    • Just a small addition - If you're running the command from Powershell, the syntax is: ./vivetool /enable /id:41073112
    • The weak US Governments and DoJ have never been good enough at regulating greedy giants like Apple and Microsoft. These companies want your money yet they will take away your useful features and choices too to sell you the "next upgrade" and no Govt acts against that.
