UK cinemas to boycott Alice in Wonderland?

Those who currently reside in the UK may want to wait a while before pre-ordering your tickets for Tim Burton?s Alice in Wonderland.

According to The Guardian UK cinema chains Odeon, Vue and Cineworld (who combined represent 95% of UK 3D screens) may boycott the film because of a dispute with Disney over the release window. DVD sales are falling, and have been for a number of years. Studios are trying to find ways to boost sales, and Disney has decided to reduce the DVD release for Alice in Wonderland from 17 weeks to 12. They say that they make 97% of their total box office in the first 8 weeks, so making consumers wait another two months before they can buy the DVD legitimately just presents the pirates with an ?exclusive window.?

The cinema chains on the other hand say that bringing forward the DVD release will reduce the audience appetite to see films on the big screen, which could lead to cinema closures. The Guardian says that Disney?s distribution chiefs, Bob Chapek and Chuck Viane, have flown to the UK to talk to British exhibitors over the next couple of days in an attempt to secure a release. Alice in Wonderland is projected to make ?40 million ($62 million) in the UK, so it would be in Disney?s interests to make sure audiences can see it on March 3rd.

The funny thing is that if the situation cannot be resolved then UK moviegoers who wanted to see Alice in Wonderland may turn to piracy, so Disney?s efforts to reduce it will only backfire. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Disney reaches 'Alice' deal with Cineworld

Disney has struck a deal with UK cinema chain Cineworld to show Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland as planned, from March 5.

Cineworld, Odeon and Vue had threatened to boycott the movie last week after Disney announced that it would cut the movie's theatrical run to bring it out on DVD and Blu-ray faster. UK exhibitors usually require a guaranteed four-month theatrical run to book a film, but Alice will only screen for 12 weeks in the UK.

Cineworld Chief Executive Steve Wiener confirmed that the film will screen in its 2D and 3D theatres next month: "We are extremely pleased to have reached a satisfactory compromise on this matter. As leaders in 3D we did not want the public to miss out on such a visual spectacle. As the success of Avatar has shown there is currently a huge appetite for the 3D experience."

Odeon and Vue are yet to reach an agreement on releasing Alice, while the movie is also facing a boycott from Dutch exhibitors.

I CANNOT WAIT for this film  Looks absolutely amazing. Alice in Wonderland has been my favorite story since I was really little. I have always been amazed by the story and the world that Dodgson created. I had hoped for a more adult film and by the PG rating, I assume that the film won't be that "creepy," but it still looks amazing.

Not only the UK I'm afraid. Over here (the Netherlands) not one theater will show Alice in Wonderland. Which is quite ironical because it's the first movie in a long time I was really psyched about. :/

    • This piece of ###### is probably one of the most hated apps that ever existed.
    • Microsoft is bringing a much-needed Recap app to Teams, here is a first look by Usama Jawad Microsoft Teams is heavily used in work and school environments, and perhaps one of its core but extremely useful features is the ability to record meetings. In past years, Microsoft has further improved upon this functionality by integrating AI, but you do need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to leverage most, if not all, all of those capabilities. Now, the Redmond tech firm is making another significant enhancement in the area of Teams meeting recordings. Up until now, if you wanted to access Teams recordings, you had to arduously locate the meeting invite and navigate to the dedicated tab, or go to the cloud storage location such as a SharePoint site. This was a rather overwhelming activity, especially if you don't remember the name of the meeting or the meeting occurred quite a while ago. Microsoft is now attempting to solve this problem through a dedicated Recap app that consolidates all your recordings. This centralized experience will allow users to find all recordings from the past 30 days and also offer access to other related services such as transcripts and AI-powered summaries. Customers will have the option to search for recordings, filter them, and review multiple meetings by generating AI-powered podcast-style recaps. The Recap app will list all available recordings in both thumbnail and list views. The former is shown below: And here is how Teams users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license can select multiple recordings to generate a podcast-style audio recap: Microsoft has emphasized that the Recap app is pre-installed in Teams but it will not be pinned by default. Users will able to navigate to the Teams app store from the left rail, and pin it from the apps section. It will be enabled by default for all users once it becomes available. It's worth noting that while Teams recordings and transcripts can be accessed by all users governed by existing permissions, AI-powered features like intelligent summaries, audio recaps, and video recaps will require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. The Recap app will be generally available to Teams users on Windows, Mac, and the web by the end of next month, with mobile support coming soon.
