AVG 8 Final released

Question

http://www.grisoft.com/

The web pages are a bit confusing, but you don't need to pay to upgrade.

With AVG 8.0, AVG raises the bar further by providing improved protection against traditional threats such as viruses, spam, spyware and trojans as well as new protection against emerging threats including web exploits, drive-by downloads, phishing, and rootkits. Following is a summary of new and improved features:

New Anti-Exploit Technology– AVG 8.0’s patent-pending safe surfing and safe searching technology is designed to protect users of Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers against drive-by downloads from poisoned web pages and to flag dangerous search results in Google, Yahoo and MSN search engines.

New Web Shield– Complementing the safe surfing and searching technology, the new Web Shield module scans files during download or exchange over ICQ or MSN instant messaging to ensure they are safe and free of malicious content.

New High Performance Scanning Engine– AVG has reengineered the scanning engine from the ground up to tackle viruses and spyware in a single pass, delivering improved performance and speed through support for multi-core computers, reduced system resource requirements, and streamlined maintenance.

New User Interface– Enables more intuitive and efficient operation for novice and advanced users alike.

New Anti-Rootkit– This new component removes and protects against rootkits, an especially pernicious form of malware that can give cybercriminals high-level control over infected computers.

New Firewall– The all-new AVG firewall is designed to protect computers against unauthorized access from internal and external networks as well as direct hacker attacks.

Improved Anti-Virus– Provides improved detection of hidden viruses, faster scanning, and more intuitive scheduling of scans.

Improved Resident Shield– Provides enhanced on-access scanning with the ability to scan multiple file-open requests simultaneously.

Anti-Spam– Brings faster performance to minimize email processing time and ensure prompt delivery of messages.

So how much is a subscription, I can't seem to find that on there site. Only the 34.99 for the program.

I paid for AVG with Firewall (for 2 computers for 2 years) almost 2 years ago. It nows costs ?64.99 for that, but to renew my license it's only ?34.99. I haven't decided whether i'll renew or now but it is certainly cheaper to renew (and the support i've had from AVG has been outstanding!)

There's some update for vista that "could" fix the slow browsing when using AVG

From wilders security forum:

On some computers with Windows Vista, opening of websites can be greatly slowed down when AVG WebShield is active. This behavior is in fact caused by a problem in one of the Windows network drivers, and can be fixed by installing the Windows update KB929547

I just picked it up and I don't enjoy having the 5 processes (services) running. Sure I have a powerful enough computer, but something should not be that much either way.

How does NOD32 compare to AVG in terms of services running and all that?

I'm sure i only have 2 processes running at home? I'm running AVG Antivirus + Firewall. I'm at work at the moment so can't take screenshot but i don't think i've got 5 processes?!

I think it runs more processes if you're doing a scan, or (maybe) it's doing an update. I doubt it has 5 processes when not doing anything. (I might be wrong, just my opinion)

So far i'm pretty impressed with v8, although i wish it had copied my firewall rules over, rather than making me start from scratch again!

i encountered compatability problems when using this and page browsing under xp and vista slowed down, switched back to 7.5 and have no slowdown or compatability problems.grisoft needs to fix it.

The only thing I have noticed that I don't like about the new version is when you do a scan of a file the program opens up. It used to be that little small scan screen, you know what I mean? I really enjoyed that, now it feels like the whole thing is loading and blahahhh. Just something I hate, not really important but still.

As soon as all the other antivirus apps stop sucking, I'll agree with that.

Dude, how long have you been working with computers? The first version of any app you can name doesn't work perfectly.

i am aware that new versions may not always work right i was just giving my personal experience with it(during testing it did it to but thats that)

The only way I can connect to the MSN network is to disable the web shield in advanced settings. When I have it enabled, Windows Live Messenger and Pidgin IM can't connect. That bug should be fixed.

    • Windows Server gets DNS over HTTPS (DoH) support by Usama Jawad For the past few months, Microsoft has been previewing DNS over HTTPS (DoH) for Windows DNS Server, touting it as a foundational upgrade for zero-trust enterprise networks. It essentially introduces encrypted, authenticated DNS for the networks rather than transmitting DNS traffic in clear. Now, the company has introduced the general availability (GA) of this feature. The GA of DoH encourages organizations to deploy the solution in production environments without implementing a new client-to-resolver architecture. DoH helps improve the overall security of the network and reduces the risk of spoofing due to its zero-trust design. This is a significant change because pretty much every interaction with the network requires interfacing with DNS. DoH offers several advantages over standard DNS traffic, such as encryption using HTTPS, preventing unauthorized inspection, man-in-the-middle attacks, and traffic analysis. Since it leverages TLS certificates so that clients can verify the identity of the DNS server, it prevents spoofing through this authentication mechanism. Additionally, it's built on the DoH standard defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which means that it should work with modern RFC 8484-compliant clients. Finally, it integrates into the existing network architecture seamlessly and can even run in parallel with standard DNS, so that customers can migrate to the new technology at their own pace. Microsoft says that in the past few months of preview, DoH has become more stable, and customers can confidently deploy it in production environments with proper guidance. Microsoft has emphasized that migrating to DoH is necessary for organizations that are moving toward zero-trust DNS solutions. Windows clients already support DoH, but the latest availability on Windows Server provides encrypted DNS to all endpoints. The company has also mentioned that "while this release focuses on encrypting client-to-resolver communication, support for encrypted communication between Windows DNS Server and upstream DNS resolvers is planned for a future update." You can follow Microsoft's guidance to deploy DoH here, but keep in mind that you need a Windows Server 2025 installation with the latest Patch Tuesday updates installed.
    • Lol I had one of these turn faulty in Jan, guess it wasn't just bad luck lol
    • I'm team Rossmann all the way. I have the exact same NVME, altough not in an array like him.
    • It had gone weeks ago. Although thinking about it I'm on the beta.
    • They thought value of their goods would forever only drop like it used to and didn't account for sudden increase in price because of all the Ai hype. Tough luck Samsung, don't try to weasel this one out. Also American customer protection laws are a**. In Europe, you need to be compensated for a functioning product of same or better characteristics (not same price point as when it was originally bought!) if it can't be repaired and when you receive a replacement product your warranty starts from scratch because you received a different item than you previously had and old warranty thus cannot apply to it anymore. If your actual item was successfully repaired, warranty gets extended for the period the item was in service. If item is repaired to a significant extent, warranty also starts over from scratch because major part of it was replaced. Americans need to fight to get this kind of consumer protections because they are constantly getting screwed over.
