Borbus
Arch Linux. Xfce. As you can see I'm trying to put Conky in the gap between the panels at the top. Hopefully I can figure out how to add a background image to conky so it actually looks like the panel... Borbus
Well I can't edit my previous post, but I've just managed to do what I wanted with Conky. I now have it drawn on top of an xfce panel. It works great, better than I thought it would actually. It's not easy to do, I can post a guide if anyone is interested, it probably works for Gnome and KDE panels too. DomZ
I've stopped using AWN for some reason, it was just starting to get on my nerves. So I made the top panel bigger to act as an application launcher. Here's the clean version: And the dirty: Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/622924-gnu-linux-march-2008-desktop-thread/#findComment-589245311 Share on other sites

rson451
I'm hoping to switch to archlinux. Anyone got any advice for the switch? be prepared to learn :) oh oh and since you are switching distros, why not try something new and switch up desktop environments or window managers? big changes often end with great results. if you dont like it, you can always go back to xfce. Hehe, Yeah thats the idea! Well I have always used gnome, since way back in RH5 or something, I tried KDE but it was to shiny and bulky for my liking. I am trying different window managers, I like XFwm. and I also like xfce4. Nice, light, minimal... Any window managers you could recommend? also anything in specific I should learn before ARCH? I know its all going to be command line stuff at the beginning with the text based setup and all so I'm doing everything in a terminal window, using runlevel 3 more. snap55
ArchLinux Xmonad CABHATSMARSP6776a I've been using linux since 98-99 mostly redhat/fedora with xfce for the last 5 or 6 years. And for last few years with ubuntu fedora etc the installation is so nice and easy, with Arch it was nice to have a distro that asked a bit more of you during the install and getting the config and everything set up nicely. Give it a go you won't regret it. Plus theres a nice Arch forum with all the help you could ever need. Well I Have quickly looked at the website, I found an installation guide and some other handy stuff for setting it up. Haven't had a look at the forums though. I'm holding off the switch till the end of this term so I don't interrupt my Uni program if something goes wrong or I take days to finish configuring stuff(which is guaranteed coz I'm hella picky with how things work/look)... Just wondering, I could set it all up on a virtualbox no?
