oh oh and since you are switching distros, why not try something new and switch up desktop environments or window managers? big changes often end with great results. if you dont like it, you can always go back to xfce.

Yes, good idea. I switched from Ubuntu and Gnome to Arch and Xfce and I am loving it.

With regard to switching to Arch, be prepared to install everything manually. If there apps that you consider essential that come with your distro (like the task manager or device viewer) make sure you know the names of these apps because they won't be included by default with Arch.

Also be prepared for things to break! But remember Arch's philosophy: Keep It Simple. There are not a million config files included with Arch, almost everything you will need to change is in the rc.conf file. If you break something, don't start thinking about huge radical changes like reinstalling the whole system, just check your config files, you probably made a slight error.

And if something does go wrong, and you end up not being able to start X, just switch to another tty, like tty5 (ctrl-alt-F5), run irssi and join #archlinux on freenode. When I installed Arch the first thing I did was get irssi running in screen so I could keep asking questions if I wasn't sure about something. It's a very friendly channel.
