[Official] Grand Theft Auto IV

I knew there was some sort of wheelie achievement, but I hadn't really looked at them yet. Anyway, I was screwing around on a Faggio doing a wheelie on a bridge and when I finally stopped I had gotten an achievement. I looked at the stats and I got a 1400ft wheelie just screwing around.

When do more clothing shops open up (after the initial one)?

I got an Xbox & GTA IV question so I thought I would combine them here.

Ive been trying to set up my 360 on a Sony KE-32TS2E plasma. I connected the supplied leads to the component inputs on the back and it switched to HD. But no matter what setting I used, 720p 1080i on the xbox, the picture wasnt perfect. Mostly you can see this faint white shadow on text and I cant make it go away. It does look alot better than using my Panasonic CRT but still, HD should be HD, shouldnt it?

Secondly, in regards to GTA IV and this is just me. When the game auto saves at certain points, is the save music supposed to sound like its been cut off? It sounds like its fragmented, like a skipping CD.

Can't help you with your TV, it might need calibrating. But as for the auto-save sound, it varies depending on the "importance" of the mission/task completed.

Boo... i'm trying to get that wheelie achievement :p. 3 shops open up on Algonquin island (big middle Manhattan-esque island) once you have access to it.

Wired has made a post that rounds up some of the GTA Numbers following Take 2?s $500 Million dollar announcement earlier today. A lot of you have asked for some GTA LIVE numbers, so let?s take a look a what we have so far:

* In the first week, more than 2.3 million people played Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox LIVE

* GTA IV is now the number one played game on Xbox LIVE (as you already know)

* Over the weekend, we saw the Xbox LIVE service reach 1 million concurrent users

* Gamers have unlocked more than 12 million achievements worth over 100 million gamerscore points in GTA

* Grand Theft Auto IV set a new record for time played, with the average gamer spending more than four hours playing the game on LIVE in the first week alone

Not bad for a week, huh?

More numbers around console sales have been posted at the Gamerscoreblog

http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/05/07/...iv-numbers.aspx

that's pretty impress:pe :p

oh crap, i finished the story mode yesterday, saved the game and started a new game (to get the liberty city minute achievement), just started up and saw my savegame is gone, also my autosave, which i got after the first hour of starting again, wtf. :(

edit: pfew, false alarm. apparently my brother was signed in and didn't even start the game yet.

I think I'm pretty close to beating the game. I gotta say, it's amazing how I'm actually somewhat emotionally invested in Niko and his story. It was actually difficult deciding whether or not to kill Darko Brevic, the man who betrayed Niko's squad during the war and got all his friends killed. I was so close to pulling the trigger, but ended up letting Brevic go.

What happens when you do that, i chose option nr. 2 and Niko seemed like he wasn't really pleased to have done it, how is the emotional reaction to letting him go

hey guys if you use he cheats on the ps3 system does that ruin the game in anyway?

Not sure

Some people experience not being able to reach 100% because they saved after using a cheat - a bug of some kind that has plagued the GTA series for a long time :p

Not sure if that applies to GTA4 tho

Just dont save with cheats on

If I ever feel the need to cheat or go create havok, I always do it after I'm done progressing the story and I've saved. That way I can just turn it off once I'm done and not have to worry about messign up my save.

That particular decision has no effect on the gameplay. The only thing that changes is the dialogue you hear afterwards :)

I think i'm over the half way point :)

I wonder if anyone could tell me how far i am or how long is left.

Just done all of Derricks missions, i just got that prison guy and killed him. I think main storyline wise, i am on the first mission after you find out Michelle is working for someone.

i'm jealous, i bought the game last week but i'm still waiting on the 360 to be delivered

He's annoyed. He basically rants about having chased this guy for over a decade, only to find him and let him live.

On another note, I just beat the game last night. F***ing Pegorino! How dare you do that to Kate! Just because I chose to not deal with that b****** Dmitri? I was definitely pleased to hunt Pegorino and take him out, although I wish I'd been allowed to take the final shot.

Just was randomly going through my phone and I realized there was an Options (to it). :p

Anyways, after exploring through it, I found the sleep mode. I wish I would have known about this earlier as there was some critical things I was doing that got interrupted because somebody called me and wanted to hang out (and I didn't want to disappoint).

Sleep mode disables everything though, meaning you cannot turn it on during a mission to only do that mission, it will disable everything. Not sure if you realized that or not, but from your wording I just wanted to clarify it.

Basically it just means free roam, every mission and side mission turned off, which is still very cool.

Yes, I understood it, but thanks anyways.

I like it just because I can do the police missions/most wanted without having a situation like I described above come into play.

Guys I think I finally found something that I don't like about the game (it was inevitable). The soundtrack that has always been on in the past games for me, just seems off in GTA IV. I guess I don't enjoy 3+ acoustic stations. By this time in the past, I already have a couple favorites too. Sadly, I can't pick one out specifically, not sure why, it just feels weird.

On a good note, multiplayer is a blast. I finally took the plunge and I can say I am stunned that Rockstar pulled it off. I was sure multiplayer on this type of a game would be a disaster, but it has been completely the opposite for me yet.

    • An actual cosmic "Eye of Sauron" had been looking straight at us all along by Sayan Sen Image by Kovin P. Vasquez via Pexels | Not representative An international team of researchers has solved a long-standing mystery surrounding a distant blazar known as PKS 1424+240, helping explain why it produces some of the brightest high-energy gamma rays and cosmic neutrinos ever observed despite appearing to have a relatively slow-moving jet. The findings were published on June 6 in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters. The study addresses a broader challenge in astrophysics: understanding how extreme cosmic objects accelerate particles to very high energies and produce very high-energy (VHE) photons and neutrinos. PKS 1424+240 is located billions of light-years from Earth. It has attracted attention for years because it is both a powerful source of VHE gamma rays and the brightest known neutrino-emitting blazar in the sky, according to observations by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. It is also associated with one of the strongest peaks in IceCube's nine-year neutrino sky map A blazar is a type of active galactic nucleus powered by a supermassive black hole that pulls in surrounding matter and launches jets of plasma moving close to the speed of light. What makes blazars unique is their orientation. One of their jets points almost directly toward Earth, making them appear exceptionally bright across the electromagnetic spectrum and allowing scientists to study some of the most extreme physical processes in the Universe. The scientists exclaimed it's like the 'Eye of Sauron' in deep space. Usually, the brightest gamma-ray-emitting blazars are expected to have jets that appear to move very quickly. However, radio observations of PKS 1424+240 suggested that its jet was moving much more slowly, creating a contradiction that became part of a long-running problem known as the "Doppler factor crisis." To investigate, researchers analyzed 15 years of observations from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), a network of 10 radio antennas spread across the continental United States, Hawaii and St. Croix. Using a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), astronomers combine signals from widely separated radio telescopes to create a virtual Earth-sized telescope capable of revealing extremely fine details. The team combined 42 polarization-sensitive radio images collected between 2009 and 2025, creating a much deeper and more detailed view of the jet than had previously been possible. The observations were carried out as part of MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments), a long-running program that studies the brightness, polarization and magnetic field structures of jets produced by active galaxies. The project aims to better understand how activity near supermassive black holes is linked to high-energy radiation and neutrino emission. “When we reconstructed the image, it looked absolutely stunning,” said Yuri Kovalev, lead author of the study and Principal Investigator of the European Research Council-funded MuSES project at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “We have never seen anything quite like it — a near-perfect toroidal magnetic field with a jet, pointing straight at us.” The image revealed an unusual geometry. The researchers found that Earth lies almost directly in line with the jet, with a viewing angle of less than 0.6 degrees. In simple terms, astronomers are looking almost straight down the jet. This turned out to be the key to the mystery. Because the jet is aimed almost directly at Earth, a relativistic effect called Doppler boosting dramatically increases its apparent brightness. The study found that this effect boosts the emission by a factor of about 30 while also making the jet appear slower than it actually is. “This alignment causes a boost in brightness by a factor of 30 or more,” said Jack Livingston, a co-author at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “At the same time, the jet appears to move slowly due to projection effects — a classic optical illusion.” The nearly head-on view also gave scientists a rare look at the jet's magnetic field. Using polarized radio signals, they detected a clear toroidal, or doughnut-shaped, magnetic field component. The observations suggest the jet carries an electric current and that its magnetic field helps launch, shape and stabilize the flow of plasma. Researchers believe this magnetic structure may also play a key role in accelerating particles to energies high enough to produce both gamma rays and neutrinos. “Solving this puzzle confirms that active galactic nuclei with supermassive black holes are not only powerful accelerators of electrons, but also of protons — the origin of the observed high-energy neutrinos,” Kovalev said. The research was conducted under the MuSES (Multi-messenger Studies of Energetic Sources) project, which investigates how active galactic nuclei accelerate particles and generate different cosmic signals, including light and neutrinos. Scientists say understanding how protons are accelerated and linked to neutrino production remains one of the major unanswered questions in astrophysics. The findings help explain why some blazars can appear to have slow jets while still producing extremely bright high-energy emissions. More broadly, the study strengthens the link between relativistic jets, magnetic fields, gamma rays and high-energy neutrinos. Researchers say the results provide new clues about how some of the Universe's most powerful natural particle accelerators work and offer important insights for multimessenger astronomy, which combines different types of cosmic signals to study extreme events in space.
