macbook battery stops charging at 98%

Recommended Posts

recently, my macbooks battery will not load to 100% although the magsave is connected and all.

coconut is telling me that its overall capacity is at 98%, does it mean its slowly dying on me, because the capacity is just not 100% anymore?

istat pro tells me, its at 100% health, coconut says the charger is not connected although it is and istat seconds that its connected to power and yea, it just stops charging at 98%, as said.

mini battery logger even tells me that its at 5140/5020, which would be an even greater capacity then it actually should have but i know that happens sometimes.

im just a little confused by the different information i get.

my mac is 16 months old, its a blackbook 2,0 c2d...

I see this all the time. The battery has a feature in it to stop overcharging and this sometimes cuts in to early.

Also worth noting is: If the battery is over 95% full and you connect the adapter it will not charge. Again this is intentional. the battery needs to be drained past 95% then plugged in. This is to try and limit charge cycling which can reduce the batteries lifespan quite dramatically.

is that a new feature with 10.5.2?

sorry for my dumbness but... yeah... ;)

No, it's hardware based so it's been there the entire life of your Mac.

One thing you can try is a battery calibration.

I done this the other day and I'm getting at least another 10-20 minutes out of it now

It's not good to fully ( 100% ) charge your battery. Dell has been using such limitation for a while now. I'm sure you can find more about "overcharging" your laptop battery on Google but I am too lazy now. ;)

Noteworthy: The Safari spellchecker doesn't recognise the word "Google".

As has been mentioned already it is part of the hardware, the Battery has a chip in it which manages this function (and a few others).

My MacBook is currently at 99% and has stopped charging which is normal.

Calibrating the battery will not fix this, as it's technically not an issue, it is by design.
